A Beginner's Guide to the Suck of PvPFollow

#1 May 28 2011 at 8:16 PM Rating: Default
Summary: PvP in the game is based on gear - not skill - at all times, in all places of the game.

I know there are ppl with no life that will cry that they're able to face-roll ppl based on skill not gear but really it's gear + lvl / job = win in this game. If you think otherwise try taking off your archon +10's and roll with a shade set (which is no small feat either) and see how far you get.

My complaint is not simply that pvp comes down to my gear face-rolls yours, rather that there is no part of the game that even attempts to remove gear from the equation of PvP.

Dredge for example could use a formula to rank players' gear and put them in teams that were actually competitive and balanced according to the lvl of gear each team would have but instead we get the lame Korean +pts -pts depending if your team is winning. A more meaningless and ineffective solution there could not be.

Added to this are the curtailing of PvE players into PvP scenarios. Want that stigma stone, res stone, or any number of other PvE items? Well get ready to grind PvP AP to get it...

Want to finish a PvE spy quest? Well setting defined incoming rift locations will ensure you get ganked by a purple when you step through. Or how about just putting the incoming rifts in loaded elyos questing/grinding spots. Eltnen Kyola Temple anyone?

In closing if you want to make your game PvP centric - make sure it caters to more than just the ppl with no life that can grind AP. Some ppl don't want to toss their life away just to be able to attempt to be competitive in a game. The implication being - grind millions of AP - and then you can have fun, but how much fun is it to win by what is essentially a handicap?

Part of the reason the game has been dying and will continue to do so, is due to imbalances like PvP. As it rightfully should which is at least some peace of mind to those that have suffered it.

What trickle of new customers there are now will certainly be gone as with many veterans once new products arrive. My complaints while from the perspective of a beginner resonate with a majority of the veteran players I meet. The consensus - there is no reason to stay once better MMO fair come to market later this year.

And really cheers to that because who wants to see a poorly design product rewarded with repeat business.
