I picked it up today. Starts off pretty epic. Graphics are jaw dropping. I'm still figuring out the new combat system and got my but handed to me on the first mission but the story so far drops you right into some cool stuff.
I wish I still had my save files from the first game. I built a new rig between now and then and forgot to save them so I am starting with the default story which is much different than how I completed the first game. Might have to give it another play though and after I beat this one and see how much you can change the outcomes.
Ok back to playing more on this later. :)

I'm developing a bit of a love/hate relationship with this game. Some of the time it seems amazing, but that is only when you are not utterly frustrated.
Pro:
Very nice graphics. I'm running a custom blend between high and ultra. I'm not a big fan of Crysis style motion blur camera so I turned that off but I am able to run everything else pretty high and it looks stunning.
Engaging story from the get go. I felt drawn back into the Witcher world immediately. I'm enjoying the plot much like ME/ME2 it's a bit like being part of a good movie or book.
Combat: I like how they switched the combat system to be slow and fast attacks on the mouse rather than switching stances.
Con:
It's very difficult with no gentle learning curve of the new combat system. I hate to admit stuff like this and my gamer pride won't let me set it to easy. BUT MY GOD MAN. You are thrown to the wolves early and often. You better RTFM. Becuase if you are not blocking, dodging, spell stuning, and throwing bombs you are going to die. Often.
Real time Quick events: There will come a time when a dragon is chasing you. To dodge the breath hit left mouse. Simple enough right? (No spoiler there becuase they tell you to do that in game) WRONG! You are going to die over and over until you turn off the buggy Real time event and set that to non difficult. This would only be a blow to my pride if it was not becuase of it being buggy and not registering half the time.
Save Points:
Yes the story is good but no I don't want to go through a 15 minute conversation AGAIN becuase I died right after the conversation and it was a non savable area. You can click all the way through them but be careful becuase you can F up and not pick the conversation answer you wanted the first time becuase you are in a hurry to get back to the part right after. Then you die again on the part right after...
So yeah in conclusion I don't know if the difficulty curve is going to go from: "I'm a Witcher but I die every 30 seconds" to "I"M THE FING WITCHER GOD KNEEL BEFORE ME" after you get more gear and talent points. But early on it's a pretty rough ride lol. Though still fun.

What irks me about this release is that apparently they took down their login/register function while preparing for Patch 1.1. Unfortunately, that means you can't install the patches for the first game since you can't register your copy of the game. 
Looking forward to completing the first (never did finish it - found the combat wonky) so I can get the sequel. It looks amazing.

Save points are so irritating to me now that I've gotten used to playing MMOs and PS3 games...
And, if you are going to have them, they sure as hell better be frequent (I thought FFXIII was fine) and cut-scenes that might need to be repeated should have a repeat option. Which wouldn't really be hard. The system could easily be programmed to keep track of answers since your last save and automatically use those if you decide to skip a cutscene in future attempts.

Just finished L.A. Noire and have been looking forward to this game for over a year. I might have to pick up a second card for crossfire so I can play on high settings. Going to look @#%^ing brilliant on a 55" TV.

Okay so I understand a bit more now why the combat in the prologue was so difficult. I found out if you import your save you get to keep your uber Raven armor and Arondight sword. I imagine that making a pretty substantial difference compared to the default junk I was wearing.
But I am out of the prologue now and working my way through chapter one. With a bit of better armor and weapons I am now doing pretty well. The forest around the first town is stunning. Walking along the high rocky bank of the river below, looking at the old growth tree's and light steaming through them. Then it started to rain and the effect was really cool.
Anyway I am not very far yet in this game due to a slow start and still playing some MMO's but hope to get further in soon.

this game kicked butt. had to skip most of the side quests in the second half because damn, **** was going down!
had to play on the lowest settings (except texture size to large) and it still looked amazing.

Yeah I just finished my first play through as well. I concur, this game is fantastic.
I mostly went sword line with a bit of buffed quen sheild and about midway through ch 1 I was starting to be pretty damn strong. Really the Prologue was the hardest part. Although there are a few tough spots after. But non of that matters becuase the story is great and the pacing leaves you breathless at times.
I think this game puts DA 2 to shame. Honestly this is one of the best RPG's I have played to date even with it's flaws its a stand out masterpeice IMHO.
And now for some spoiler talk!:
During Witcher 1 I had originally sided with the Scoia'tael . As I did not have my save handy the game had me defaulted to having not helped them and the elves calling me a bertrayer and whatnot. So I went with helping Roche. Partly becuase I wanted to nail Ves. (Mission accomplished there!) But also becuase I thought Roche was pretty cool. I had also chosen Shiani over Triss in the first game. But the default had me with Triss here so I ran with that.
I was thinking about it and I realized my old computer is in the storage closet and I might be able to salvage my save. So on my second play through I am going to side with the elves again and help Iorveth. I'm thinking the story will be pretty different since I hope I might team up with the virgin sword lady and oppose Henselt from the start.
I also skipped a bit of the side quests in ch3 just becuase I was way into the main story line. On my next play I plan to try and complete everything and explore a bit more. For example there was a sword recipe for an uber super sword I never got becuase it needed a dragon scale. But I killed the dragon and there was no chance to loot it ... Plus the vendor was gone after the dragon fight. So I know I missing several tings like that on my first play through.
I think the game has some serious replay potential though. Next time I am going to invest heavily in magic and alchemy in stead of swords and see how that goes.

After watching the Escapist review for this game, and listening to all of the frustrations that they expressed with the gameplay, I just re-installed Morrowind.

Yes but he has liked a total of what, five of the games he has reviewed? I'm still waiting to play. I think I'm going to order a second 6850 next week and possibly a SSD for my games sometime in the future. I probably won't get around to playing Witcher 2 for another month at least, mostly because I'm going to get Infamous and something else to play first for my PSN free games. Also, I think I may download a few PSX games for my PSP (Chrono Cross and FFIX) and I still need to play through The Witcher again first since it's been a while.

Instead of searching for my old save I decided to just download one from a gamefaqs thread where they made the same choices as me on The Witcher 1.
Starting with the Raven armor and 2 better swords helps some but they scale them down so they were not as much stronger than the default starter gear as I thought they might be. I've already replaced them early into chapter 1. Mostly it's just that I have my combat skills down to instinct now.
