When your message gets recommended, you get healed to full. So even though you can't plan when you'll get healed, you might end up back at full health in the middle of a rough fight/duel. And it means you don't need to spend souls on healing items.

I think my favorite part is when you get one message trying to ***** people over which then prompts one half the player base to spawn warning messages and one half to spawn encouraging ones.

:P

I actually never got very far in DS. I enjoyed the game quite a bit. But I got it right before school started up again and it was part of a buy 2, get 1 free deal, so I had two other new games to play. :P

P.S. I'm logged into PSN. :D

Demon's Soul just didn't do it for me. I don't particularly care for games that are designed to **** me off.

On the contrary, dying at the last section of the 500m Dragon Dash due to those GD heavy armored knights pissed me off to no end.

Any challenging game is going to have moments that **** you off. My point was that death along in DS never made me angry. There were times when I felt like the game cheated, or was too unrealistic with what it wanted from me, sure. But the normal deaths never really upset me.

Compare that to a F/TPS game. Dying in those generally gets me very, very annoyed. Especially because it is always RIGHT BEFORE THE STUPID CHECK POINT.

Dying in standard RPGs can be particularly annoying too. Yunalesca from FFX in your first playthrough is a good example. A boss with zombie->cure and insta-death moves (which could KO your whole party with there being nothing you could do about it)? THAT made me angry. And the grind to get some death/zombieproof gear didn't help my mood.

F/TPS games WITH boss battles? Yeah, nothing induces rage quite like those. >___<

Wait, scratch that. Mario Kart. Mario Kart has probably brought out the worst in me of all video games.

Also to note, it seems that online multiplayer isn't completely up, even in green areas that were able to log in/change their password (I could also access hulu).

Demons Souls couldn't connect, even though I was logged in. Didn't try anything else though.

The thing really annoyed me the most though, is that DS isn't even hard, it's just cheap. There are tons of ways to die, and then when you die you have to go all the way back to the beginning of the level, fight your way through all the mobs you just killed, and hope the same thing doesn't happen five steps after you get passed the thing that just killed.

I know that. My point is that by adding that as an option, it means that everyone spams the damn thing. There's not even any point in reading the messages because most of them are completely inane and not helpful at all. In the rare event that someone is genuinely trying to help, they're too restricted by the limited selection of messages to actually say something useful. The whole system just left a lot to be desired.

This, too. I enjoy a challenging game, but DS is a game of memorization, not skill. Once you memorize where the ambushes and traps are, and how the enemies move and attack, it's incredibly easy. Until you reach that point, the penalty for messing up is getting to do everything all over again. It's really hard to enjoy that very much.

I found the game challenging.

Plus, isn't it a little ridiculous to criticize a game for no longer being challenging once you've memorized where all the enemies/traps are? I mean, I can't really think of a game where that isn't true. I suppose there are some that have, in addition to those set mobs, randomly spawning ones (like in Bioshock). Still though, the game's difficulty is going to drop by a ton if you know where all the main surprises are, and the strategies to deal with them.

There's a difference between a game becoming less challenging when you know where everything is, and a game being challenging only because you don't know where everything is. Combat in Demon's Souls is incredibly easy, unless you haven't fought that particular enemy before. Every single enemy has wholly predictable timing, attack patterns, and movement patterns, but if you don't know what they are, you're going to die, and often. Like with the enemies in the very first world, they're really weak and not hard to take down. But I died the first time I fought one. Why? Because after one of their attacks, they appear to be off balance, then suddenly thrash their whole damn body and do massive damage if you're nearby. I can't avoid that with quick reflexes; my only recourse is to know about it beforehand. That, to me, isn't fun. Fun is being able to see a new type of enemy and defeat it based on reaction time alone, not rote memorization.

I enjoyed a lot of aspects of Demon's Souls. And there were good and bad sides to the challenge of it.

It's just that after a while of playing it, I really got the feeling like I was punishing myself.

There were definitely harder enemies mixed in too though. The red/blue-eyed knights, for instance. Yeah, there were strategies to take them down, but those strategies were always specific to your location. Because unless you had awesome stats and great gear, they could take you down 1 on 1 (granted, you had a chance of winning if your shield absorbed all physical damage).

If the whole game had been populated with enemies like those, it would have sucked, imo.

I never felt like I had the same problem you did. What you are describing is definitely true (at least to an extent), but I never felt the way you did. I think part of it is heavily specific to where you die in the level and how often. The beginning of... 4-1(maybe?) for instance, I died a TON. So the beginning of the level ended up as being mostly auto-pilot. But for most levels, I didn't die as much, so I still usually had to actively pay attention in the early moments of the level, or I would definitely die again.

Y'know, it would be wise for Sony to send emails to all of its NA users, letting them know they can play again...

It's a good bet that all the PSN users who cared either camped the blog or hit "Sign In" every hour.

Yes, but they've opened up their PC games again as well and I never got an email. I only know because I read it on this site. Not everyone visits sites like these.

They've also tacked on 45 days of game time to ALL SOE games you are either subbed to now or have been in the past. I might just fire up Vanguard and SWG for ***** and giggles.

Sony announced the list of free games for PSN users. It's not a terrible list, but nothing spectacular either.

Quote:
Once the PlayStation Store is restored, PSN users can select two PS3 games from the following list for download, free of charge:

-Dead Nation
-inFAMOUS
-LittleBigPlanet
-Super Stardust HD
-Wipeout HD + Fury

If you're a PSP owner with a PSN account you've got two more choices to make out of the following four games:

-LittleBigPlanet PSP
-ModNation Racers
-Pursuite Force
-Killzone Liberation

I'll probably grab inFAMOUS and Wipeout HD. I sold my PSP, so no real opinion there.

Also:
Quote:
The PlayStation blog also reports that PlayStation Network users will also be able to choose from a selection of "On Us" movie rentals over the course of one weekend. If you were not enrolled in PlayStation Plus, Sony's hoping you'll change your mind after 30 days free of the premium PSN service. The same 30 days will be available to individuals not enrolled in Sony's Music Unlimited service.

If you were enrolled in PlayStation Plus before the outage, your account will be extended by 60 days. If you were already enrolled in Music Unlimited you'll get 30 free days attached to the end of your current subscription, along with the total number of days the service was out.

Even PlayStation Home will get a handful of bonuses in order to get player to reenter the virtual space. 100 virtual items will be available to users reentering Home after the service outage. More free content will also become available including an addition to the Home Mansion space and Ooblag's Alien Casino.

I have no idea what that home stuff is all about since I've never used it, but it's more free stuff for those interested.

Source.

If I was in the EU, I would have grabbed Super Stardust HD. Not because I want it, but because the F*CKING DEMO LEFT A TROPHIES LIST ON MY ACCOUNT.

Seeing that little 0 next to the game makes me so angry whenever I check them. >:(

After that... probably inFamous. I have LBP, don't like Zombie games and wipeout is racing or something.

[EDIT]

Oh, wait, games are for NA too?

Coolbeans, so I'll grab inFamous and that f*cking Stardust game.

I've got Super Stardust and Wipeout, so I'll be going with Infamous and one of the other two, I guess. I'm leaning towards Dead Nation.

Not a bad deal, really.

So I can sign in, but the Store is still down? I didn't even know PSN was back up... can ps3 users play games online now (held out buying MK because a friend said it had to go online to save...)?
So confused, and I even read the last 20 posts Smiley: laugh

But free games? That is cool.

You can play most online games, except for Demon's Souls because Atlus hasn't started the server again, and any game with an Online Pass that was not activated before the PSN went down. You need access to the Store in order to activate Online Passes.

I updated my PS3 and tried to sign in. I got the prompt telling me that I had to change my password and that an email would be sent to the address I have registered. It's been almost two hours and still no email. That's quite a bit longer than I expected it to take honestly. Most times when you get an automated email it only takes a couple minutes. Anyone else have to wait an excessive amount of time?

You should have been able to change your password when the PS3 rebooted after installing the update. Try going to Account Management and see if you can change it there.

Sony mentioned the delay in a blog post. Apparently, they've had to start submitting the password changes from users in bursts, because letting them all come in at once was clogging the system and the emailing system just couldn't keep up.

So, once your password's batch is submitted, you'll get an email.

Oh, and I've played both AC:B and Black Ops without any hiccups.
