From my understanding, its in the past. I'm sure there are other loopholes to deal with why certain characters are in the game and others aren't, and why they are or aren't in future games (as in the others), but at least that part kind of sort of makes sense.

It is a story set in the Mortal Kombat universe, not the story of Mortal Kombat. I am sure you seen the robotic weapons Kano's men were shipping, with the directed energy eyeball. Now Kano has been horribly disfigured in that blast he will put on the mask I reckon. Jax will probably also need a bionic arm after the explosion as well.

It has Agent Ballard from Dollhouse, instantly makes it an awesome show. Unashamed Whedon fanboy.
