If you're looking for a new game to check out, we're giving away Spiral Knights invitations that will let you play it before it launches on April 4. All you need to do is click a link and you can start playing in minutes: http://www.zam.com/story.html?story=25720.

It's a free-to-play browser game that has a console-style feel to it. Definitely has a Legend of Zelda vibe. The above link contains a short announcement trailer that features some gameplay footage.

Could be entertaining--I played around with it a little. I like that you can upgrade your gear by playing, but if it doesn't have a deeper effect (like causing them to upgrade to different items, rather than just gaining attack/defense), it might not be something that keeps me interested.

Still though, it looks pretty refined. Especially considering it's free.

That big robot in the 1st part of the Camp sells different Armor for around 150 (crowns?) monies. I only played for about 10min, I need to look up how to access a Character screen. It shows I have a Gun in my items, but I have no idea how to swap weapons -.o
Probably should have read them little Bubble notes as I ran through the intro.

Press the space bar to swap between weapons. It tells you that when you first meet the exploding blocks (attack from a distance to avoid damage).

Has anyone actually had their stuff get stronger when it levels up? Mine all seems to stay the same...

[EDIT]

Nvm, I just bought a new sword (the one that's good against slimes) and it clearly does quite a bit less damage than my level 4 proto sword (even against slimes, lol). So I'm assuming you just don't see the stat changes, but it does get stronger.

I think the stats bar shows you what the starting strength and fully maxed strength of an items stat is.

There is a blue bar that represents the strength, and when you look at the item, you notice a faded blue bar in the background, larger than it. Once the item levels up, the blue bar grows. At level 10 (max for the weapons I saw, maybe max total?) the blue completely fills the faded part. That's what I noticed at least.

The game was surprisingly fun. I can see playing it off and on, and seeing how it's pretty easy to solo or form a group, it makes it easy to pick up and go. The "Mist/Crystal" energy makes it a game you would play a bit each day... unless you want to spend money on Crystal Energy to do more each day. Not that it's energy intensive to play, but those treasure levels can eat through your energy pretty fast if you are alone.

You CAN solo very easily, but it's way better to group. Since all coins are shared, as are minerals, you end up with way more cash afterwards. And, by splitting energy costs for lifts/doors, you can go way further than you would be able to otherwise.

Still, though, you are right in that you generally CAN solo it all. But it pays to know what the level needs in terms of resists.

I know coins and heat are shared, but I thought that the Shards and Items dropped weren't. I notice that Everyone usually ends up with different items at the end, some people get lucky and get the good stuff. The last night I played, before the shutdown, I solo'd a few of the levels I ran previously in a group, I ended up with many more actual item drops than when I grouped it.

Edit:
Oh, and those skull and cross bones warning rooms... they really mean "Danger, do not enter!". Me and a few people tried one. It was wave after wave of jellies, including a large one with spines that did an AoE underground spine attack. Even after killing two of them, the waves kept coming.

I know the reward may have been huge, but I cannot imagine how we could beat it...

That is true--items aren't. But more items are dropped, so it evens out.

Spiral Knights has officially launched, so anyone can head over to the game's site and play without an invite.

Here are Pwyff's impressions of the game: http://www.zam.com/story.html?story=25868

Anyone playing this? I picked it up through Steam a few weeks ago, been playing it like crazy (stopped playing after the beta ended). It's pretty fun. I made it to the Core with the help of some friends today. I purchased their 3 dollar "explorer pack" with some left over change in my Steam Wallet, just so I could poke around. I don't plan on buying anymore stuff though. It was enough to get me started to the point where I can get stuff pretty easy now. Been doing boss fights for special equipment recently.

You can buy the Energy with in game money, so you don't have to spend real money on it if you don't want, just a bit of time.

I tried it out for the steam achievement. It was okay, but when I considered my gaming/anime backlog I just didn't have a place for it.

Allegory and I are playing this, we're roaming T2 and beat the twins while substantially under geared.
