Just a few don'ts for this forumFollow

I have seen an increase in post that are not very enhancing to this forum, so I thought I would just give a few, general rules about what is good and bad for the forums. This is not enforced by any admins, but it would just make the forums better in my opinion.

Do not type titles in all caps. No body here is blind, so we don't need to be attracted to your post. I read almost every post (except ones that I KNOW have nothing to do with me), so saying LOOKEY HERE MY POST IS GOOD doesn't get me reading it any faster. Same goes for *, /, #, etc.... No symbols also!

Do not, and I mean, do not disrespect other posters on the basis of race, religion, and anything else that they have the right to do. You are no one to tell other people what to believe. I remember that about 75 years ago a guy tried to do that and over 6 million people were murdered and millions more died fighting him. I think you get the point. The only exception to this rule is if the person is a hacker or something else of that nature. Then it is fun to **** them of and make fun of them :P (Just don't bring race and religion into it!)

Do not over use internet slang, or other things of the nature (this includes smilies, 1337 SP34K, and AIM Speak). The occasional lol or that kind of stuff it fine, but when you start having entire post filled with it, it is hard to read and just plain bad looking. Also, remember that God (or whatever higher being(s) you believe in) gave us punctuation for a reason! It was to make it so we could read things! Let's not revert to Ancient Latin and start having post like SWGestmagnusludussemper, hehe.

Do not restart topics that have been milked of all the good an enlightening dicussion they can get. Do not ask the same questions that have been asked several times. Just as a courtisy, before posting a question/comment/rant/etc... look back a few pages or remember if it was just discussed. Also, do not bump old topics with no knew information, just for the sake of starting a new discussion. We already discussed it, okay!

Do not advertise on this forum. Nobody wants to read advertisements! It is okay to have MAYBE one post telling people about a new site or something, but do not refer people to that site in every post you make.

Do not do auctions or other forum specific post. In gneral, this is not your target audience. I only care about the server to server issues of two servers for the most part, and SOE has not only put aside forums for EVERY server, but have also given every server a specific forum for trading and such. If you need a ranger or new suit of armor, please use those.

Do not post irrelevent information on a thread. A thread is created to discuss a certain topic, not what you did last night. If you want to talk about something that is not related to SWG, go to the Out of Topic Forum or the other appropriate forum (please, no games in the OOT forum). If you want to discuss something with someone, carry it out in private messages. To do this, find a post by that person, and near the top of their post is something that says "Send PM".

Do not bump threads with stupid stuff. This includes /bump, bump, bumpidey, etc.... There is a reason why no one responded to your thread (whatever it may be) and seeing it at the top doesn't make me want to post on it any more! It is okay to bump, however, if you use new (and exciting :) ) information, or if you edited the ORIGINAL post and wish to inform people about it. Only do the last thing mentioned if it is a thread that you are updating with new info (like this one) and not just changing the wording or fixing mistakes.

Perhaps the biggest NO of all, do not promote, condone, allow, stand by, disregard, let slip by, post, create, or in any other way promote cheating, exploiting, hacking, third-party programs, and anything else of this nature on this forum, nor put it into use in-game. Cheating may benefit you, but it destroys, and I mean DESTROYS the experience for anyone else, so please, don't be an assh[Black][/Black]hole (pardon my French) and allow this to happen.

And last, No private threads. Folks, this is not one person's forums, but everyones. That also means that allpost are open to everyone. If you want to do something specifically with your guild, just type in "guild" (- quotes) into a message's reciever, and the whole guild gets it. If you want a forum for your own city or guild, use www.guildportal.com. It is free and good for guilds.

Thank you for reading, and let's all work together to make the forums better :)

i would like to add one, if i may be so bold.

-if you are not responding to the thread, don't post just to say something to/about the author or a poster.

(yeah, i'm guilty of that, too. i've just begun to notice it lately, so i'm trying to become more self aware.)

If you say something to/about the author or a poster, you are in fact responding...

Dunno if it's true, but felt like you stabbed DMo and I.

Surely, we are allowed to reply to such a thread with positive comments, aren't we?

Sorry if I got it the wrong way though.

chaz, i can see why you could think that with what i wrote, let me see if i can find an example in a post of what i'm talking about. well, here i'll pull from my response on the TKM thread that's so hot lately the all caps title about listen up...

i wrote "no, you listen up..... i don't care"

and while that is technically a response to the thread, if i don't care, why did i write in in the first place?

it's like when someone asks a question, and instead of answering or directing them to an answer, someone just simply types a response like "you're an idiot, why are you here?" kinda stuff. it's not helpful to just bash someone :).

i would always encourage the "hey, good idea" or "i like that" or "thanks for your help" type stuff.

Very nice, you remind me of me before I stop caring.

Possibly add some thing about not starting a new topic on some thing when there are already topics on that subject.

Ok, I admit, I am guilty of a couple of these things, (like the /bump on topics that are already dead), but I think that if it is a good thread and alot of peeps comment on it and there is a good discussion about the topic, then why not bump it a few times to see if anyone else has any fresh takes.

Sorry brothers.

First off, right on Splinter. Excellent post/thread and all points are well made. /applaud. By the way, kudos on your 1500th! Awesome! I remember when you congradulated me on my 250th post. Almost doubled that now lol. ;)

Seoi I completely agree. Happened to me recently in the OOT forum. Just tried to explain something to someone very respectfully as I always try to be, and out of nowhere someone posted those exact words. "You're an idiot." & "A waste of human flesh" among some other choice words. Totally bashed me for no reason. Accused me of being condescending to the person I was explaining something to, when I wasn't at all. We went back and forth for a few posts till I finally said I wouldn't repond anymore because this forum is not for personal vendettas. It's just sad that people use these forums as a way to vent hostilities towards absolute strangers and from the security of the internet.

Anyway, great thread and replys. Rate ups all around! Thanx guys.

Regards,

8. No excessive rules that forbid posters from going a little off topic in an SWG thread.

As for the rest, it can all be summed up in one word:

9. Respect.
