It probably depends on what server you are on and also there is a vast difference in the price of the ships between vendors, i Use careful searching for the best prices on the shipwright
vendors and you can get good deals.
For instance i was quoted 900k for an opressor from one vendor and finally got one for 450k from another, remember though that the higher lvl ships cost more because of the massive amounts of materials required.
Anyway here goes:

Level 1 ship 15K - 50k (i got one off the bazaar for 6k but i coulda just been lucky)
Level 2 ship 50k - 100k (mine was 75k)
Level 3 ship 150k - 200k (mine was 150k)
Level 4 ship 200k - 300k (bought two, second one has maximum mass and cost 300k)
LEVEL 5 SHIPS - These cost anywhere from 500k upwards
A KSE firespray on Eclipse can cost 7 million - 20 million depending on the ship wright, as they have to reverse engineer about 3000+ items to get the schematic and then theres the cost of the materials.

hope this helps as this is only my experiance and some may have different experiances.

Quick note: Now the solo groups have been nerfed - space combat duty missions can rake in some very good money once you get to be a reasonably high level pilot.
There are three ways to make money from space combat
1. looting money from ships you blow up - rule of thumb about 250 credits.
2. each mission gives you a cash payout which rises as you proceed through the duty.
3. Ship parts are looted as you shoot ships at about a rate of one out of eight ships destoyed. These can be sold at the chassis dealer for a set amount of immediate cash - or you can play the bazaar and try to make more money off the lower level parts.

This means that in my experiance, its easy to make around 200k for a 1.5hr mission duty.

how good is the starter ship, i havent played in a few months and want to get the expansion as soon as i'm back in north america. i have barely enuff money to keep my weapons and armor insured and in mildly good repair. and i've had barely 20k total in my entire playing time an up to 50k for a level one is a tad steep. can u mod ur starter ship or do anything with it?

You can't mod your starter ship, but you will be able to loot the components you need for your tier 1 ship. Anything you don't want to keep you can sell to the chassis dealer at any starport. I guarantee after you complete your tier 1 missions you will have enough to buy a tier 1 ship, then just install your looted components and voila no more waiting at the darn starports...

You will be able to buy the ship from the chassis dealer once you have the blueprints but you won't be able to fly it until you have the right skills. Remember there are different ships for the different factions so don't buy the bluprints for a ship you can't use.
