Tips for new monks?Follow

#1 Nov 28 2004 at 1:31 AM Rating: Decent
I just started a monk, and so far I think I'm gonna have fun with him. However, I could use some tips on how to make him and handle him. I read the creation guide on EQOA Realms, but it was about as informative as stereo instructions in Mandarin. Anyone got any ideas, tips, hints etc.? I'd appreciate it!

Kicks are your friends, you get a few and they will provide you with a bunch of damage.

You cant use punch attacks with weapons, but you can melee pretty good with out weapons equiped, but lose out on stats, so it is your choice.

Primary power pool is dex, secondary is sta. I would put the stats in order of Dex, str, sta, and then agi, but then again you need to find the balance to suit your play style.

Dont go all out on the mob, let the tank get aggro and maintain aggro, and it will be easier if you do your big damage attacks at the end.

You also may want to keep a self heal or 2 up for emergancies.

back in the day when i had my monk.. i completely messed him up. i think he was my first or second character. anyways you can build your monk to solo or group. i would pick group but thats just me. if your building a grouping monk, you should want high dex and str, and obviously stamina for when you steal agro and also for power pool. so on my newly remade monk, my stats go in order of dex str sta. if your going to solo alot i would add to dex sta str and some agi. when i made my monk again, i kept my stats 5 tps away. like dex 120 str 115 and sta 110. whatever you want, its your toon. and i find that monks are better without weapons until like 30ish, just my opinion. experiment, see what you like.

I appreciate the advice. I have 4 characters, each one a different class: one melee, one healer, one tank, and one caster. I was intrigued about monks, so I decided to start one, but I had never tried a melee class before. Tanks and healers are easy to figure out in my opinion, but the melee and caster characters are hard to decide which way to go.

I pretty much have my necromancer down pat. He's a blood necro, and I'm grooming him for a serious DD. I was hoping to make my monk towards soloing because sometimes I just wanna play with myself...wait...that sounded wrong >;)

um sta is just as important as str,1) sta mods our combos 2)pwr pool 3)wont be paper.so IMO you should get sta/dex/str to 100base then up dex/sta rest of the way

I love my little monk...she can take a hit and deal one...I still use equipped weapons..its all to your playing style...some dont for reasons that the punches are instant and deal more damage faster...however there is a balance with weapons too..you can up your stats with them to suit your group or camp...also as someone said you can mantain and manage your mana....so really either you can quad harder with them and I personally use kicks...overall my damage is even flowing and power maintained...or you can forget the stats from weapons...go for punches to which are a little easier to go out of power...depending on how you maintain it...either are good choices...they are just personal preference...

I would tell you if you plan on using your abilities...like swooping eagle...brawling bear...those are modified by Sta...yes Sta...this is also a main power stat... I have found it easy to find gear in all of the four main stats so you can choose to load into this or not...or up dex and str to deal damage and wear stamina gear...just as an example not as a requirement...

your gear constantly changes ...so fast you will have a hard time deciding what is best...I have gear for when I am tanking at EG...and I have gear for when I am grouped as a dd at Slayers...

keep in mind what you would like to do as an MC...I know its a little earlier to start at say level 20...but if you want sensei you have requirements of 125 wisdom base...150 agility...and stamina and dex requirements...which will make you invest training points more selectively...

but the saving grace and actual one thing I can say is a smart thing...not one training point needs go into wisdom if you dont want to that is...to get the 125 base when going Sensei...the Enlightened Minds required to be bought for the MC will automatically make that base 125...if not 135 I think...so that you can choose to invest more or less later...but its good to know they dont "have" to be put there...so that would be something to look at...the cms you are thinking about purchasing as well and how they can add to your base...

As a lower level monk..or as any character...I like investing in stamina no matter what...this is personal choice for me...I know realistically with leveling toons..that you dont seem to come into your own til your 30 path and higher...a dd loaded with str and dex only is a good asset as long as they dont make the tank taunt harder ...take aggro more..and one hit go down like a wet noodle...you wont have much fun in groups if you die all the time...so some investment is wise...

someone said main power stats til 20...yes yes yes....I agree...dont touch anything else...work on your power pool and you have the advantage of gaining hit points at the same time while filling that pool...with stamina...after 20 then worry about your training points...

I have talked to a couple monks...one who was telling me the experiments he has done with the base in strength...basically the jist is over 200 base in strength is excessive...I am almost to the 200 strength and I notice more modified damage with more dex than strength invested...there are many many strength items out there...

I also chose rat form for the added dex and agility...I chose this because our strength buff spell will make up for the strength that is negated in the final form...but I also personally like being able to go on raids and have made myself more of a raid monk in my choices of sensei and stats...

definitely all a personal choice...I enjoy healing very much...and love having a "back up" heal if the healer cant get to me in time...and cant wait to be able to throw one on someone else...

all bull shiot aside it comes down to this...throw a training point here and there after 20 and see what style works for you...til 20 load your power stats so you can actually group effiecently...other than that its not gonna make a difference what we say...lol
