Strange Story - Sad EndingFollow

Hey there, just wanted to report something that (from accounts of other players and the increasing amount of times it is appearing on these forums) shows a pretty bad pattern for this game.
Im in Corellia, Coronet on the Sunrunner Server the other night when a female toon called "Roseis" comes up to me. She is ecstatic that she has finally made novice commando. I understand this, myself being master and knowing the long trawl through unarmed 4 and the 40k combat xp required for novice so i congratulate roseis and tell her i am happy for her.
At this point Roseis asks me if she can borrow my flamethrower. I tell her that the flamer i use is very expensive (custom made for me) but that i do have a "mass produced" one with not bad stats and trade it to her. She stresses as we trade that she only wants to try it out and will return it after a couple of hours. The emphasis that she stresses on this gets me slightly suspicious but i go ahead with the trade anyway thinking that im doing her a good turn (i had 'Helper' above my name) and the flamer is below 25% anyway. As i am typing in that she can keep the flamer for however long it lasts i am suddenly spammed with
"LOL @ U N00B - IM A GUY IN RL" in /tell.
Roseis then ran off, leaving me bewildered and thinking "LOL @ U NOOB - UR LAME IN RL"
anyway, what im trying to say is that it didnt take long for the majority of players in this game to turn cynical, untrustworthy and malicious. I think the thing that attracted me to it in the beginning was the helpful, friendly community i was part of. Thats long gone now and it only took a few months.

It seems a sad trend indeed... more and more gullible people subscribe to the game each day. My sympathies go out to you for being such a caring and trusting fool to all of the female polygons out there.

Hmm... Well first of all I feel a bit sry for ya, but what did you expect ? Borrowing out your flamethrower, that is NOT very smart now is it ? I dont really think so, so I guess that its your own fault you lost it. I know its not the point, but you know being friendly ingame, it is not worth it. But you know a lot of people has started the latest time, and I would not really except that every one of them would be honest and friendly, and I was not even surprised about your story.
Nothing to do about it anyway so :) get over it and next time, ask the guy to fu*k off

Stuff like this does add a bit of realisim to the game. Most MMOs strive to be a micro-causam of society. Haveing theifs, liers and cross-dressers to me just makes things more interesting.

Hearing stories like this makes me really glad I hang out in-game with a great bunch of people. I joined my guild about 7 mo before SWG went live. We played ShadowBane together. We even hold gatherings where we hang out in RL.

Alot of the same punks who ruined public server Counter Strike received SWG for christmas.

So expect stuff like this to happen more often in the future...

Next time yank your dialoge window up to full screen size take a screenshot and report his/her/it's @ss to Sony. You might not get anything done, but its worth a shot.

The sad part of the story is that this person thought they were getting away with something, you were gonna let them keep it anyways, I personally keep a stock of basic weopons so that people who claim to be noobs or need a weopon can just have no them no big deal.

desnoshor, you're on to something here. Not only did the clever thief think that he/she got away with something special, the list goes on:

1. thought that the donor was motivated to cooperate by the thief's sex.
2. thought that the donor was a "NOOB", presumably for the aforementioned mistake.
3. thought that "NOOB" was an insult.

What a savory victory.

I find that person's attitude amusing. Did he think you were being helpful because the toon was female? *shakes her head* I do feel for you though.

Considering most of the replies you got had the same cynical attitude, completely missing that you knew you weren't going to get your weapon back, that you were basically gifting it to them.

Hoowah for you though! Smiley: smile For being generous without thought of reward.

And a brief word of encouragement... I just came over from EQ. I've been playing SWG for about a month now, and one of the most marked things I've noticed? People actually do help. Good damn luck getting any help in EQ anymore. :) In general (with a few rare very wonderful exceptions) people there are untrusting and untrustworthy with a health dose of ungrateful and rude thrown in for bad measure.

Ironically (and sadly) this seems to be a cycle that all MMOs go through. I saw it with UO... the same happened with EQ...

well monserrat, i dont know if you have problems reading english but, as clearly stated, i fully intended to give away the flamer and therefore, its loss was calculated. Try reading the post again (maybe getting someone to help you if you are having trouble).
I will concede though that i have been gullible up and until now. I got helped out big style by a couple of guys when i first joined swg. they answered all of my questions, showed me how to do stuff and basically bent over backwards to spend their time online in order to help me out. i thought i would do the same thinking that i was part of a good community of players. Well, lesson learned i suppose and it cost me a 30k flamer that i used more than three quarters of. I suppose that ill just have to grind out some missions to make that money back lol - that may take some time for a master commando . . .
Needless to say, i wont be helping anyone again - and reading the comments about the lack of help in the EQ game (never played it, this is my first mmorpg) i can see the trend going the same way as lamers like this roseis continue to think they are clever and run around stealing, begging and scamming

I have helped people on Valcyrn, and one guy was a gal in RL. They anounced it to the entire game that was standing around that they were a girl and that they had kissed me. I had just given them a general crafting tool. My answer to that was, even gay people can play, I would have helped you at any rate. It did not matter to me. The kiss, described by the game was passionate, My reply was I didn't feel a thing. Alot of LOL's were seen and that person must have gone to another server,or changed their ways, I haven't seen them since. But I will continue to help, a good rep replaces alot of bad hype. My group is a wonderful bunch of people, I came in very green, I was tucked under a few wings, and am trying to help others. I am still learning too, but I refuse to let the loss of a few things limit my enjoyment of the game.

Maybe I can't read english either, but I got the impression Monserat was being sarcastic.

Connetigutted,
I am glad to see you helped someone out. Even if they were an idiot, you protected yourself and still helped them out.
Like other posters, I was helped out so very much when I started this game. I had never played a MMORPG before and knew nothing about them, but 2 guys on Wanderhome took almost a week to teach me everything they could about playing.
One person's kindness, in RL of the game can undo a hundred Jack@$$&$ rude behavior.

yea the first day i played (christmas) someone helped me all day i was so happy. it really sickens me that great mmorpg's are ruined by people who think they cool because they can scam someone of something. i hope that action will be taken to get rid of thses people because games like this are so much fun when played with nice people.

I think you have to take this thing in the same manner as in RL... you can't let people sour your experience ... and as for people who think that helping is not worth it (because of fake money or whatever) i think thats a lame attitude... what reason to play if not for the people? Help is always appreciated by new or lost players and respect and dignity go a lot farther in peoples minds then (fake) credits and (fake) items.. i'll never stop helping people and man, you did a good thing by offering her(him) the flamethrower.... too bad he(she?) turned out to be a prick but your willingness to help is really inspiring (especially by dishing out a 30k weapon)... way to go!

I'm very new to swg and enjoy it so far, but I would imagine that just like in EQ, the game is only as good (or fun) as the people you group with.

I myself enjoy helping the noobs out as well, but I have seen lately by putting up my Helper title I just get spammed with "Can you give me some money?"

I reccomend checking out my post titled "Helpers" as I am just curious just how many people get beggars as well...

I like the community. I'm on Tarquinas and I'm usually around AH or Traders Town. When I'm in AH I see declared Imps helping Declared Rebs after they have killed them. I thought this one guy was an @$$ but he turned out to be pretty cool. I hate getting killed though when I come back with a TEF by him.

hey there crookedcrown. im unsure as to your trades in game but if you have ever taken the road to commando then youll know what im on about. getting 40k combat xp can be quite tiring (with the paltry marksman weapons you can use) and the grind to unarmed 4 took me a long time (way back 3 months ago when we didnt know as much as we do now). As soon as you see that commando trainer the only thing on your mind is "i want to blow things up". I sincerely thought i was doing this bizarre character a good turn in giving out the flamer i had used in my younger days.

Quick wit and a sharp tongue is a good defence against people like this. At the least you can goud them into having a full on argument with you them you ignore them and walk off. The greifing mofos are often the easiest to toy with.
i just hope people still offer thier help, just be careful.

urrrr.... im a little confused by this.. i gave you thumbs up in my post and in this post it sounds like you think im disagreeing with you.... am i reading this wrong? well, i guess it doesn't matter....

anyway, i've never taken the road to commando but i do plan on going through to Master Squad Leader (not even apprentice right now) and I hear that path is pretty long too. Point is, all I know is that on MMORPGs, hospitality goes a LOOOOONG way, as in RL.... its all that really matters you know?

You've got ingame formulas for strength, money, possession BUT people still interact and theirs no formula for reputation, honour, dignity and so on... probably my favorite part of this game is being able to recognize who's a prick and who's an honest to goodness good person who lets that show in game (someone who realizes they're playing with other PEOPLE and not other AVATARS)

i guess the RPers are the exception... if someone (respectfully to the player) acts like they distrust rebels or act connivingly or something because its in their nature to RP, thats cool too. I've always been an RPer myself (though i could never drive myself to RP a character of a malicious nature)

ANYWAY, its cool that you were able to relate to this person (once again, unfortunate they screwed you over) but don't stop being a good person over it. I hope nobody ever stops being decent people because they meet one (or even a million) rude people.

*peace**

Unfortunately there seems to be alot of conning now. One person on Tempest server has a system where, by paying for two accounts, they have the ability to have two characters on the same server. While one character is their 'main' character, the other is a novice whatever that goes around conning people. His most common con is shouting out that he sliced weapons, and, when people pass over their krayt scatter pistols or whatever to be sliced, he simply runs off with the weapon and puts it in a vendor that his 'main' character owns. He has also claimed to sell master doc buffs, and when people have tipped him he has simply walked away. I think this is dishonest of him, but he defends himself by saying that his character is a smuggler, and that if you are to role play properly you should notice that in the booklet it even says that smugglers are meant to con people and steal. He says the way the game is set up is so that smugglers can steal the very good weapons they are given to improve. The only thing people can do is be carefull who you pay for buffs, and not to hand over weapons untill you see their smuggler tag, or even only allow smugglers in a guild or people you trust to handle your weapons. He told me this only because he said eventually people will know his 'con' character, but when he becomes notorious he will simply delete it and start over. I do not know his 'main' characters name so I couldn't say who to watch out for.

There will always be scammers, beggers, liers and thieves. But then you will find one person who truely appreciates your help and becomes a good friend from that point on.

Treasure those few good friends you make that you got to know by helping them out and ignore the mass of idiots.

Roseis is a real bad sort. It can be found most nights in any of the capitol cities spam begging at the top of its voice. confusing thing is that once it get the money it /flirt and /kiss to show its gratitude. yeurgh, i dont even wanna think on that.
it stole an armor segment from a friend of mine some weeks back that it promised it was going to slice. lesson learned now for both him and me and now it seem you too connetigutted.

I was outside of Kaadara, running some faction missions. I always take the lowest level missions, since I'm not much of a combat type. I was finishing out killing off the transmission terminal and suddenly realized I was being attacked. Someone of the opposite faction decided to be offended by my faction mission. However, they didn't realize that I am a novice pistoleer with a pretty good DX2 pistol, so I ended up chasing them all over, knocked them out and then DB'd them (I was a bit pissed at being attacked). So then I run up by the cloning center just as he comes out, and invite him to go over to the medical center, and proceed to heal his wounds as we talk for a while. Turns out that he was pretty new and didn't realize that someone with "master artisan" in their title could be rather dangerous. Some of the newbies aren't malicious so much as just plain ignorant.
