If you give a pet four commands that start with the same word, then the pet will assume that that word is its name.
steve attack
steve store
steve transfer
steve follow
Then the pet becomes (Steve). Once a pet is named, you can retrain the commands to something less cumbersome and keep the same name. Renaming the pet simply requires retraining it four commands with a new name.

Teach it four commands, with what you want the name to be, followed by the command.
Spot follow.
Spot attack.
Spot group.
Spot stay.
The animal's name will be changed to Spot now. Though, you'll probably want to go back and change the commands again, unless you want to have to say "Spot attack" every time you fight.
