Credit dupe? Accounts banned?Follow

#1 Jan 19 2004 at 4:53 AM Rating: Default
There is a message when you start up SWG under notes for January 16. Sony claims they fixed a "credit dupe" which resulted in banning of several accounts. They go on to say they don't tolerate cheating. What is this all about? Just curious what "credit dupe" is. If this was already discussed on this board I apologize for asking. I couldn't find any posts. Thanks.

They hacked ,or changed, the coding and increased their amount of credits they had aka they started the game with 200 and logged back in with 2,000,000. Or something to that effect.

They got banned for hacking? That's ridiculous!!

Anyone perhaps think that all they were doing is ROLEPLAYING a smuggler who was using their SLICING ability?

SWG claims it's an RPG than punishes people for roleplaying.

Smuggler's slice, hack, whatever you want to call it, terminals as part of their skills, and they do so to get an UNFAIR advantage, so slicing the game code is just an extension of that ability.

Why bother with RPG if this is what's gonna happen each time someone tries to play that way?

This reminds me of that poor guy who was picked on several months back for ROLEPLAYING a thief and all around bad guy. He stole some guys armor after telling the person NOT to trust him, and gets banned for a little while.

How can SWG look in the mirror!!

NOTE: The above is in no way intended to be serious, the cheats got what they deserved but I wanted to add some humor to the situation, and see how many people don't bother reading until this point and respond in anger or approval to the reply.

Just some fun...

You miss my point. They didnt use smuggler skills the hacked the original coding of the game. Use of smuggler skills is called "slicing" not hacking. Im sorry i probably should of made that clear in my previous post

Well I'll be honest with ya. I agree with sony on this point( Falls out of chair in shock) They own the rights to the game and only they should be able to change the code.
For those not in the know some players were "Credit Dupping" then selling the credits on Ebay. You would go on Ebay and buy the amount of credits you wanted ( it averaged $1 real world to 100,000 game credits). You went back into the game and in about 1-24 hrs you had the amount you bought on Ebay show up on in-game account.
The bad part was SOE never got a penny for this so they shut them down.
Enough of the angel now to play devils addvocate.
I tried to play the game the "legal" way, you know build up my PC the way you are supposed to and earn money the "legal" way.
Well after 2 mos I was no further then when I started the game( I work 45-60 hrs a week, support a wife and 2 kids). So when I got homefrom work I just could no longer bring myself to go into the game and "WORK" for another hour or two just to make enough money to buy what I needed to "play" the game. DAMIT I work for a living I shouldn't have to work to enjoy a game I really want to play and am paying a monthly fee for!
I was about to give up and cancel my subscription. Then a friend told me about Ebay and how he bought 5 mil credits there for his PC. So I checked it out. After thinking long and hard about it, I did it to.
I still harvest and sale resourses, go on quests for money, but now its not an all time job for me. I can enjoy the game and have fun now. Not "WORK" to maybe get time to play the game.
Yes some of you will flame me I exspect it.
I do say SOE was right for shutting those duppers down but that now leaves a market wide open for them and another way of generating revinue. Think about it SOE can now offer the credits for sale themselves to feel the need and NO not everyone would buy the credits!
There will always be hardcore true blue players who will never sink as low as "buying" there money and I say more power to them. I have alot of respect for them but I just dont have the time to invest in the game like most of them do. But there are people like me who get home from a 10-12 hr day at work and can't stand the thought of going back to work to play a game I want to play and enjoy and yes paying a monthly fee on.

A few months ago I was standing in Anchor Head near the bazaars waiting for the shuttles when I had someone /tell me a message starting out "Hey can you keep a secret?" I thought it was about a pvp raid, so I said "sure". He then told me something about duping the bazaars. I asked him what he meant buy "Duping". He told me about how he would put something on the bazzar and then I would buy it, then put it back on the bazaar and he would buy it. This would allow both of us to gain the cash from the sale. I'm not sure exactly what he was talking about. But I ended up saying "no" and walked away. I was a noob and needed money but this whole thing didnt sound right. I guess I made the right decision. Has anyone else come across this? Is this what they meant buy "Duping?"

I agree with SOE on this one...finding a bug or exploit by accident and using it the first time you come across it is one thing...to repeat the offense is something different...

the economy in the game is just now starting to really stablize and the last thing we need is a money upheval...heck money is almost worthless by the time you have it now...when I first started 10k was alot of money...now I rarely have less then 700k...I support new guys and help them out when I have time and then tip them a sum of money when I don't have the time to take them under my wing for an hour or two...

So I say we should all be glad they are watching...

You are looking at the small picture if you look at in the large picture if lots of people started gettting 2 mil instead of 2 credits this could seriously unbalance the in-game swg economy.

Too little too late on SOE's actions.. people have been duping resources and items and credits for a long time on SWG.. they should have banned everyone who did it. But if they did that there would be almost no customers left lol.

SWG is still in beta they shouldn't start punishing people for discovering exploits unless they are warned and don't stop
