To solo without being a ch, here are some options i can think of, but i'm sure there are others.

1. Get a non-ch pet to tank for you, continue as you used to.
2. Traps. There are a couple of good traps for soloing that slow mobs down and allow you to kite them without getting hit. Phec darts come to mind: these traps slow down a mob for about 10 seconds and allow you to shoot them a few times, then throw another trap.
3. Rifleman. I loved being a rifleman. If you want to pursue this route, you get incredibly powerful mind attacks, and Conceal shot, which allows you to attack any target without them agroing you, unless it fails (which only happens rarely).
4. Get your melee defense up. Get good armor. Buy BE clothes that give melee defense bonuses. Be your own tank.
5. Start any attack with a bleed. By attacking a target with only a bleed, then spamming the 'Peace' button and running away a bit, it is possible to draw a single mob away from a group without agroing other mobs in the group.
6. knockdowns. Learn a profession that can keep a mob on their butt so they can't hurt you.
7. Bleed a mob then hop on your speeder and drive around them in circles till they are near death.

Fighting without pets is harder because it takes more tactics, which means it takes more skill. But once you learn how to truly solo mobs you'll find that killing them is more rewarding, and you'll become a better fighter, too. Hope this all helps, and good luck.

Seriously though, the above posts ae great ways, i am a rifleman and i have to agree with the bleed / conceal shots.

Friend of mine dropped master CH and all his CH skills and took up TKA. He was running around kicking the crap out of things and he was a wussie twilek.

Now that my lovely holochron says Master TKA, I suppose I will be doing the same thing. I'm a Master CH/Commando 0/0/4/0 and plan on keeping the flamethrower stuff though. Nothing like a 1500 point unstoppable bleed to assist you in kicking the crap out of stuff.

One little secret too about bleeds, if you ONLY hit them with a bleed from your weapon and then start your normal attacks, the bleed damage is unassigned so all the xp goes to your non bleed attack. FYI, if i start combat with Health Shot 2 with my pistol and immediately shift to my flamethrower, at the end of combat I get full xp as Heavy Weapons, not as pistol. I am not sure if flamethrowers work the same way though because I believe they have a non-bleed portion of their damage on the attack so probably won't work the same, but if you do rifleman/tka or something you should be able to start with a mind bleed and once you are able do the mind strikes and get full xp for melee if you do it right.

Hope that helps some.

Soon to be Master TKA (thanks Mr. Holochron!)

RUN AROUND WITH CONSTANT BUFFS. buy some really good 80% 70% composite armour. and yes tactics help a bit. after i gave up ch i realised how much i relied on it but didnt have too. i can now solo almost anything in game. taking on 7 to 10 enraged bull rancors at one time i thought noone could solo. but it is quite nice to be able to do without tanks. im a master pistoleer smuggler and my friends tera kasi with way better defence but with my armour i am always the one tanking..

Marksman 4, just run around and shoot stuff. Don't go for the higher rifles, use laser rifle. Get one with great damage and buy damage powerups and work on getting a damage slice. Don't worry about the speed slices, each level you get faster with the speed and if you get one well made the speed will be experimented down anyway.

Carbines just take patience.

Pistols, get you a GREAT damage FWG5 and get it damage sliced as well (speed won't matter). Use bleeds but also hit them with your big shots. Pistol XP seemed to go fastest, then rifle and carbines seemed to take longer (for me anyways).

The combat xp tree will be filled by the time you fill the other 3.
