Help, got taken!Follow

#1 Jan 06 2004 at 5:21 PM Rating: Decent
Hi, here is my true sob story...

Bought SWG on Ebay, got it today, the game was still shrink wrapped, all manuals there, etc.

Excited, I installed the game no problem, went to activate the account, and "This CD-Key has already been registered" pops up. I used the SOE live chat and talked to a rep there, who said that there really wasn't anything I could do about it.

So now I have this game that I really want to play, but can't! Is anyone willing to take pity on me and send me a buddy key so that I can at least get started playing? I can send you a picture of the game discs, manual, etc if you want proof I am not a leecher that downloaded a warez copy, etc if you want...

Please help! I really want to get into this game and have been waiting a long time!

Thanks so much,
Craig

That sucks. Mind if I ask how much you paid for it?

I was under the impression that one could have multiple accounts under one key, but I guess SOE is greedier than I thought, and make people buy a new key (unless warez) for each account.

The people selling it had many of them up on ebay. Collectors edition was I think 20.00US, I got the regular one and paid 9.99US+ 9.00S/H...so 20.00US...

I guess it's my own fault for getting it off of Ebay...you just never know, I guess.

Hopefully someone will be willing to help me out.

I think you can make multiple characters under 1 CD Key, but once a CD key has been registered, it can never be used again. The guy on the live chat told me that sometimes people burn a copy of a friends CDs, then go and buy the game, use the key (without ever unwrapping the game), then return the game to the store. He said that there isn't anything that they can (or will) do about it. That seemed weird to me - I can prove I have the legit copy, and they know who is using the cd key for this copy, so why can't they take action against the other guy?

Anyways, I guess it's a lesson learned...

Thanks,
Craig

Thats sucks that the guy said they cant do anything about it. They know you've got the legit copy of the game(or at least you can prove it if asked) and they know who is using that account. It just seems like they cant be stuffed helping you out. I suppose thats just one of the dodgy things about ebay.
If you bought it from a store and it was already in use I know for certain that they have to take it back and give you another as i did it myself with EQ a year ago.

Hi,

Thanks so much but I think you have have accidentally sent me a registration code, not a buddy key...? The code you sent is only 8 characters long and the key is 20 characters...

Thanks,
Craig

you didn't get taken he sold you the CD's and case in stuff for 10.00 bucks. You need to go out and Buy game cards now or set it up all you lost was the 30 days for free. but really you pay for that when you pay 49.99.

I WISH that was teh problem, then I coul;d just buy game cards! Tehe problem is that someone else registered the key, and once a key is registered, it can NEVER be registered again by anyone. So, if you sold your game to someone else and they tried to activate with their own SOE account, it would not work. They would have to use your SOE account for it to work. Someone has used my key, so I can't even get to billing information, so yes, I got screwed. If game cards came with a registration key, then all would be well...

Thanks for trying though,
Craig

Report the Seller to any authority you can find namely E-bay
Pay-pal Soe ( Dont go through tech support talk to their sales department or ask to talk to legal department if they will let you ) Talk to your Credit/Debit card Company and report it as Fraud. also you can try and hold the payment. Although for $10 its not worth but keeping the guy from making money off of it is the whole goal

Sorry you got taken - I "don't" think alot of sellers that are selling the game on E-bay realize that they can't sell it. I know I have played other onlline games and you could sell the game but you had to give the person you were selling it to your complete user account. Along with a separate special password.

I bought a copy of SWG from my local Media Play a on Jan. 2nd, got home and installed it and found out the CD key was already registered also. I also found out that SOE was on vacation till the 5th! I always thought the SOE's CS was always there when you needed them (silly me). Anyway i called Media Play they said they would have to call SOE to varify what i said, before they could give me another copy. I didnt wanna wait so i bought another copy, the Key worked and i was happy (though $50 short for the weekend). I went to Media Play monday, they called SOE, i got my cash back. I guess in a round-about way I am saying, ***** buying this type of stuff off Egay.

If a game is already registered to another user all you have to do is get the other users screen name and password. Then once you log on you as that user you can change the billing information to your line of credit and adress. I have a friend who used to do this with Ashrons call all the time.

You don't need a new key or the old one just the old users screen name and password. Call your seller from ebay and see if he can give you this information. I know your an intelligent individual but check through the information he sent you with the game and make sure that he didn't already supply you with the necesarry info.
