I've been trying to locate the fish Black Sole for ages now and am having a hell of a time. I'm also having some problems locating grade 6 SEAS. I have seen posts about grade 6 seas south of cedarwood but all I have found south of there are grade 4, 7 and 8. I'm a level 43 fisher and any help would be appreciated.

I caught black sole at the thanalan ferry terminal while 1 up from the middle. I don't recall if the message said it was the right spot, however. I was using a spoon lure.

Also I fished there for a long time and all that has happened is I got 1 black sole and lost one. Maybe some of the unnamed lost fish were those too.

I can confirm at the thanalan docks in grade 3 sea water there are black soles but are rare.

Thanks for the help. By its level it should be common on grade 4 fishing locations. The only grade 4 seas I have found are east of Cedarwood and they aren't biting there. I guess I'll hunt for more G4 locations.

Don't thing in those lines of logic. SE goes by the logic that these types of fish live in these areas, thus can only be found here. Same goes for trees and what minerals are found in an area. Like in trees' they put swan feathers and crow feathers if tehy decide that this type of bird lives in this climate and regional type territory when it would make sense for em to.

Like Limsa is a mountain of iron, thus there being a cache of wealth in that type of mineral, most areas of the black shroud being tin and zinc types of minerals and so on.

Currently the only place you can catch black soles is at the docks of thanalan, cedarwoods ash tuna and shards like there, as well as breams and there being large coral reefs.

I get the "something big" message with Floating Minnow's catching sole, so they work fine, but there may be something better.

Considering the SP benefits for overcamping fishing now, and penalties for undercamping, I don't forsee catching any more of these untill I'm 50 fishing.

yeah if I don't have "way of plenty" proccing I have a real hard time getting these still... and only getting about 80 SP on a success for grade 3 now. HOWEVER, they are only nibbling at crab balls/spoon lures - so if they actually BITE floating minnows than that could make a big difference for things.

I am ok with the reduced SP gain just cause I want these to use ranking up my ALC.

Thanks for the tips.

Only getting nibbles is not necissarily due to the bait.

When I was lower rank, and my rod was getting under 50% I would always get nibble first, with a possible nibble on the second wait if it was black sole.

I would have to suggest only getting nibbles from this fish is a function of your rank and or stats being to low.
To the degree that at a low enough rank, it is not even possible to have high enough stats to not get nibbles.

Even before the SP changes, my opinion was that if you were of rank to fish black sole efficiently, would be sacrificing SP, because you could be easily fishing in grade 4/5 waters by that point. Black Sole is a grade 4 type fished, based on it's rank, that got stuck in grade 3 water, due to the geographical information provided by the devs, since there is no grade 4 salt water in the Uldah areas.

Once everyone is 50, and people are fishing for mats/profit, this will be the target fish.
When SP is the primary consideration, this fish is a major wrench in the system if you are trying to also fish up usefull materials while grinding.

I've got pretty high dex and pie... but yeah I am low for grade 4 fish - I have some trouble with them on grade 4 nodes. I find that I can fish just fine on grade 4 when I eat +gather food however. I just ranked up last night so will be interesting to see if that helps.

Black Sole is a R46 fish. You're going to have a hard time fishing up many of these if your fishing is not up to par. That being said spoon lures are your best bang for your buck. Sinking Minnows are a bit better but they cost a lot more.

The reason you see almost every bait/lure listed is because it is possible to catch them with saltwater bait. Rat Tails, Sinking Minnows, and Floating Minnows in that order will trigger the "Something big is on the line" message. Also with the last update with the right setup you can pull them from middle like they are in a barrel.

If you can't get enough Rat Tails just buy whatever lure you can pick up the cheapest. Sinking Minnows are a little better then others after Rat Tails, but not enough to spend twice the gil. You should be able to pull up a stack an hour with appropriate traits set.
