I have not been playing too much since release but there has certainly been some changes.

1) Guild leves are not nearly as attractive any more. I did the Fishing Bearded Rock and in Open Beta I would receive 6-700 skill points when ever I caught a fish. Now I am lucky if I get 150.

2) You nearly get no high quality items. I have a bag full of fish and not a single +1. This has been seriously reduced as I got tons of these in open beta.

Now I am not complaining about these changes but it definetly makes it a lot harder to level up and make some money. I hope that the work that needs to be put into fishing pays out when reaching the higher levels.

Is this the same with mining and harvesting and what about crafting. Do the other classes have a harder time as well?

Yeah... this is brutal compared to before.. the leves for this aren't worth it unless it's one that contains a rod or item anymore.. you get nearly as much skill with just a normal cast now. Not sure I really care in the end, but given the speed of other things, would be nice to have a change at extra skill points from a good jig or something.

I'm still getting +1's - +3's pretty easily, but yeah... using Guardian's Favor is completely pointless now for levequests. They can't be used as a skill up tool anymore, they are strictly for gil/rewards. Not too happy about that.

I also noticed that you get a lot more "nothing bites", "you lost the fish" than before and if you make one mistake the stamina of the fish goes ZERO immediately and you loose it. Before you could jig small steps towards the actual point, now if you do that you loose the fish almost 100% of the time.

I was getting a little discouraged at the start, but only level 7 now and it's much easier to catch fish, you get the normal attempts. I also managed to snag a hat with some control on it, not sure if that makes a big difference or not.

EDIT: Ok, I fished off the coast in the area outside Limsa Lominsa (had been doing from inside the city and from the ferry previously) and holy crap it was bull sh!t. Exactly what you guys were talking about. It says its a rank 1 area and I'm fisher level 8. I would get 4 no fish in a row, then I'd get the BS 'you lose your catch' after one jig, or even if I got 'the fish is tired' I'd lose it after hitting right on the second time. It took me FOREVER to do the leves I got. On the 'fishing camp bentbranch' one, I literally got one fish from exhausting two fishing areas. About 25 minutes to finish each leve.

Just straight fishing I've noticed the LL area outside of town (I was near the lighthouse) I had brutal amounts of lost fish. Yet Right inside the city, still the ocean and still grade 1, it's much much easier to pull in the exact same fish.

Spearfishing skill points do seem to have gone up a tad however, and oddly enough.. even though I have less chances.. I rarely seem to miss in a higher Grade spearfish node compared to a lower one.

It is still worth it to invoke the guardian's favor on levequests where you have to catch specific fish. You will get a boost for each of those fish caught. The bonus from non levequest fish and promising locations quests is removed though.

Sadly I think that was a direct result from my "tip". Myself and others were taking advantage of being able to use all 30 minutes from the "fishing spots" leves to skillup faster. I had a feeling they would remove that, but am surprised to see they flipped it and actually give you skillups on the catch a specific fish leves. I get about 350-450 on those without guardian's favor.

Yeah, the specific fish ones are at least passable now, not to mention solid cash once you hit the rank 10 ones. Ended up with 5700 gil after the big bonus.

Once I got passed the first couple leves, I started getting decent xp (and good gil) again. And I'm not sure why you're not seeing many +1/2/3's...I've been getting plenty variety here. That being said...

Yeah, it does seem much harsher in the lower ranks, by far. It wasn't until I got veteran trade that things started feeling somewhat "normal," at least compared to how easy it was in OB. Even still, fishing seems much more arduous than ranking up my other classes atm. Hoping this will lead to big rewards later on, for our efforts! :P

Bit of advice: Aside from leves, stick to the towns early on (1-10) if you're just looking to rank up, as there seems to be much less chance of failing (Probably since you don't have the more "exotic" [read: incredibly tough] fish, nibbling at your bait).

Also, if you're having a really tough time catching a certain fish type, even though you've picked the right depth (especially for leves), it could very well be because of your bait. I found bait to make a huge difference now compared to how lax it was in OB. The crayfish leve from Ul'dah is ridiculously easy with Pill Bugs, for example. Good luck! ^_^

hmmm.

If the type of bait now matter, it will be fun to "try n' fail" during leves or normal fishing trying to figure out the right type of bait to get the right type of fish (outside the general type of waters described in the item description).

Also, I would like to know if anyone managed to ever lose a lure while fishing?
During OB as soon as I got a fly lure I never used anything else because I had the same bite rate as consumable baits and I never lost a lure despite them being stackable to 99?

Just concentrate on if your bait is for Saltwater or Freshwater. I use the Floating Minnow off the cliffs of Limsa Lominsa (the Skull Valley levequest where you catch 3 Blowfish is a good fishing spot), and I use Chocobo Fly in the ponds around Ul'Dah.

I am still enjoying fishing a lot but it is really unforgiving. If I make one wrong guess then my stamina gets fully drained and I lose the fish. It kind of makes the hot/cold game useless when I have to guess correctly the first time to have a chance.

After reaching Rank 12 Fishing, I feel like I've hit a wall.

If I go out and fish along the cliffs of Limsa Lominsa or the ponds in Ul'Dah I am bombarded with "Nothing bites" or "The fish got away" messages. If I go fish the spots Emerald Moss camp spots near Gridania I could be fine for 20 minutes or so and then suddenly attacked by an "angler" fish. Two hits and I'm dead, can't even put the pole away fast enough.

So I figure, hmmm we'll I'll go back in town and fish near the Fisherman's Guild in Limsa Lominsa. The exp drops from 110 down to about 75, but at least the bites are consistent and fast. I catch about 10 items quickly, then I hit a run of 4 "Nothing bites" and 8 "The fish got away" in a row. You get one guess at where the fish correctly is, and then the entire stamina bar completely depletes. Why did SE make the change from Open Beta style? That was perfect.

I am hoping that if I can acquire a Willow Rod from a levequest that things will improve, but so far I've done 12 of the rank 10 campsite levequests and there hasn't been any willow rods or armor rewards at all, gil only.

Anyone else having any better luck post 12? If so, any tips?

Yeah, a lot is the gear. Level 1 rod vs the fish. Lure helps too. Going to go make a whack load of Crow Lures. Help make up for any that I lose along the way. Seems the Ocean Grade fish are a lot harder to catch (other then in LL). Hitting Level 10, made the world of difference concerning Grade 2 Freshwater fish, I even managed to get some Dark Bass from the Grade 3 with a little of work.

The lures have it... I got to Fisher 11, was missing a lot of fish or getting no bites. I made myself a few dozen Crow Flies. (The recipe actually makes 3 flies not just 1) Instantly I started getting bites nearly everytime and hand a much greater success rate landing fish.

Would recommend if your have troubles try out the Chocobo Lure. It's Rank 7, just remember to grab several as you can lose them. There is also Pill Bugs that can be found/bought if you prefer the one cast bait.

Don't change your lure during leves. You will immediately be under the "uncomfortable" status and your bite rate will be non-existance. Make sure you hold the right bait before you start your leve.

I notice that I stop catching certain fish as much as I did as I rank up, instead I catch higher level fish more and more, which makes sense I guess. But it's not like FFXI where you just go to Qufim and fish up Black Soles, it's more like you won't be able to catch Black Soles as much anymore as you used to :(

Edit to add that I never used lures since I lost the ones I got as reward, I just use bloody worms, pill bugs or moth pupa depending on where I fish.

Also after rank 12 I spent alot of time in the Black shroud, south of camp Tranquill there is a grade 3 spot where you can get out of the way of agro mobs and it still gives 120xp at rank 20...

think the leves are only good for the little rewards you get over normal cast.

I keep doing leves hoping the reward might change each time I do... and hoping a new fishing rod would show up. I haven't kept any record tho if the reward had changed or not. All I can say is that I haven't seen any new rods as reward yet.

Hit fishing 12 tonight and seem to have a lot of trouble in grade 2 water still with bloodworms/lugworms. If I use chocobo fly I catch consistently, but only coral and kelp. What's the best bait to use at this point for saltwater fishing in LL grade 2 waters? Should I head out of LL areas and over to the fresh water? I'm still using the weathered rod BTW since I haven't had any luck finding one in bazaars. I was thinking of making some goby balls. Anyone have luck with these?

I think you can move on to Grade 3 fishing spots for more skillups. I starting doing those at 13.
