So... you want to be a miner?

Being selected for beta 3 and with feedback no longer required from SE, I thought the best way to help the community will be to share my experience for which has become my favorite class in FFXIV.

In this thread I will try to address the common questions that are floating around in the boards, and talk a bit about the specifics of the class, including abilities, the mini-game of mining and the required items.

Some of the information is still incomplete (I started this at the work) I will try to update more once I get back home, but please be patient, there is still a lot of stuff I don't know, moreover if you have more accurate information that the one I'm presenting here please post it in this thread to update it together with the proper credit to you.

--- First Guild Quest ---

Requirements:

- Have finished Nation quest up rank 15 (the first two)
- Miner rank 20 (and obviously a pickaxe to equip)

Instructions:

- Go to the mining guild in Ul'dah as a miner and speak with the person at the left side of the counter.
- Then speak with the girl at the entrance of Nanawa mine (north of Blackbrush camp) for a cut-scene.
- Speak a second time to get the list of items that you need to mine.
- Go to the map (through the journal) and check the spots marked with "???" will appear close to the 3 low level camps of Ul'dah (Blackbrush, Drybone and Horizon).
- Get to each of the spots and use "Lay of the land" in order to find the closes mining spot to them (the proper level of the ability is required for each camp Blackbrush = lvl 1, Drybone = lvl 2, Horizon = lvl 3), mine until you get the requested items.
- Go back to the mine and speak again with the NPC at the entrance.
- To finishing the quest go back to Uldah and speak with Linette in the Mining Guild

Reward:

- 20000 gil
- 2000 guild marks

Q&A

Q:As a miner, will I have any kind of fighting capability?
A:I would say NO, you only real attack consist in throwing rocks at the enemies which inflict minimum damage, although after rank 3 you will receive a trait to stun with those rocks, the only utility I have found for these attacks is to run away from aggressive enemies.

Q:What is it necessary to become a miner if I started as a different class?
A:The only thing you need is a pike, currently in beta we can buy it from a vendor in the markets, but chances are that any starting city will have a it available.

Q:What is this primary tool and sub tool everybody is talking about?
A:Disciples of the land and hand (addressed from now on as DoL and DoH respectively) have 2 type of tools, for miners the primary tool is the pick for ore mining spots, and the secondary (sub) tool is sledgehammer for quarry spots.

Q:If there is two types of mining spots what is the difference between them?
A:Ore spots are usually on the outside (this may not be a rule but so far is what experience dictates) and require a pick to be mined but the most important characteristic of these spots it's a mini-game that will trigger once you interact with them.
The second type of spot (I call them quarry spots, but it's just a personal nick name) appear inside caves or relatively closed spaces (Thanks to Daimakaicho for this clarification) and require the sledgehammer, there is (at least in beta) no mini-game associated with them, once the option is selected from the menu and you simple watch the animation, and obtain the item.
Additionally mining spots have levels, which determinate their difficulty

Q:How many times can I mine from an spot?
A:The number of mining attempts you can do depend on your mining level and the level of the spot, certain spots will be virtually impossible to mine unless you have the appropriate level for them.
Initially you can mine up to 5 times from a mining spot level 1 as a level 1 miner.

Q:I bet a lot of people is trying to mine, can more than 1 person mine in a single spot?
A:Yes any number of players can mine from a single mining spot at the same time.

Q:How do mining spots work?
A:So far it appears as if each mining point has a defined number of "drops" and each player has a number of "attempts". it will allow players to mine from it until it's completely depleted, currently in beta "fresh" mining points have more "drops" than a single person can extract in all his/her attempts.

Q:Which DoH are supplied by the items obtained by mining?
A:As long as beta 3 recipes goes, Goldsmiths, Armorers and Smiths use the materials obtained by miners, which in time may be the main source of materials for the equipment used by DoW (Disciples of War).

Q:Where is the mining guild? and when can I join?
A:The mining guild is in Ul'dah and you can join after reaching miner rank 20, it triggers a new set of quests (similar to the history line) and both gil and guild marks will be rewarded from them.

For the job abilities and the mini-game involved please consult the guide on the wiki.

Feel free to use this thread to answer questions related to mining, and to post any new information.

No more fighting over a claimed mining node! (maybe) :p

So, open beta has come, and I've finally got a spot. Mining is my first adventure. I'm a lvl 11 miner now, thanks in large part to levequests and the ridiculous amount of mining experience you can get doing them. I have done some exploring, but have yet to find anything greater than a level one node. Here are a few observations.

1) A node has a set amount of charges, I don't know what the charges are, but it appears to me to be between 20 and 40.

2) At level 11 mining I can make six attempts to gather resources from a particular node (lvl 1)

3) At level 10 I learned sharp vision, but I cannot equip the skill. I assume it is passive, but don't know how to see a list of all my abilities, including the passive ones. If anyone could explain where to find that information, I'll see if I can confirm.

4) Lay of the land informs you if there is a node within 400 yalms (basically a yard) and if there is which direction you should head to find it.

5) Prospect will give you a speed boost if there is not a mine within 200 yalms. The speed boost lasts 30 seconds, and you can cover roughly 200 yalms of distance while it is active. Prospect is keyed towards certain levels of nodes. If you are in an area that has level 3 nodes, and your prospect is level 2, then it will tell you simply that there does not appear to be any mining nodes level 2 or below in the area, and you will not receive the speed boost. You cannot receive the speed boost in town due to this either.

6) Different areas have different things you can mine up. I started in Uldah and was there through level 9. Fire crystals were the only type of crystal I could mine up. Yellow Copper Ore, Copper Ore, Tin Ore, Lightning Stones, and Fire Stones were all available. I made the run to Limsa Lominsa (and was able to do the starting mining levequests there as well) and found that I could now dig up Wind Crystals, Sea Sand, Shells, Water Stones, and Limonite. None of these were available around Uldah. These were all level one nodes.

7) When playing the minigame I have not found that there is a set "depth" of mining that is best to get ores as opposed to the less valuable finds. However, each particular node does seem to have a depth value that gives better finds. Once I get an ore I usually stay at that particular depth and finish off my swings at the node there.

8) In the second part of the minigame where you determine your swing strength there are three sweet spots. (There are actually six, I believe, but three will suffice for the explanation). These are given value by the different style of swing your character makes and each is located within its particular "third" of the expanding and contracting circle. The best way I've found to not fail on the extraction is to start on one end of the circle, and make your way to the other if necessary. I always start on the weak strike end, because I seem to find that it is more commonly the right end to be on.

9) The game gives you between 3 and 4 swings to come up with your prize and gives you hints after each swing. I apologize, I'm writing this while the server is down, so the hints I list here will be the spirit of the hint given to you by the game, not the hint verbatim.
1) You feel nothing promising.
This means move to the next swing value, for me I move from the weakest swing to medium swing. It could be one swing value away, or two.
2) You are closer/further from your target
You are closer means that you're traveling in the right direction, but you need to move to the last swing value. You are further means you went the wrong way. This can sometimes happen when you don't expect it and typically if you're following my progression means that the sweet spot value will either by as hard of a swing as you can make it, or as weak of a swing as you can make it, depending on the direction needed.
2) You feel something promising.
This means that you are within a swing value's distance of your prize. And this is where the 6 sweet spots come into play. Each swing value seems to have 2 sweet spots within it, one on the weak end and one on the strong end. When you get this hint, say on the weak end of swing value 2, then your sweet spot will either be the strong end of swing value 2, or the strong end of swing value 1.
3) You almost had it, but could not extract
This simply means that you were VERY close to successfully extracting. The good thing about this message is that it seems to widen the sweet spot. Don't guess if you need to swing harder or softer, just swing where you swung before. I've yet to fail to extract if I do this.

Hope all these hints help. If I ever find a level 2 node I'll let you all have an update!

Couple of things

1) Sharp vision does indeed need to be set. Its under the last set of ability slot (passive i think? Not in game atm). Try waiting abit, there was a massive amount of lag when i set it and nearly closed the window thinking it was something automatic. When set it will randomly kick in when mining a spot, usually around the last few digs from what ive seen. Never seen it kick in at the start.

2) The lowest amount of swings ive seen is 2. It appears to depend on you rank, and the rank of the item being dug up

3) Ive found level 2 nodes around camp horizon near Ul'Dah, looking for rank 3 ones now. Also found the occasional rank 5 whilst running about exploring.

Now if your close to extracting an item but end up losing it, instead of saying you lost sight of your item itll say your swing damaged it. Makes more sense i guess rather than losing sight of an inanimte object.

I found a quarry location outside yesterday. It was near Camp Emerald Moss in Black Shroud. I found it right next to one of the mini-streams you have to run across. It was very clearly not in a cave, but perhaps they can only be in these two types of spots.

You need to add that you need to go back to Linette in the Mining Guild after speaking with the NPC at the end of the quest.
