Pet ManagementFollow

#1 Mar 04 2011 at 4:30 PM Rating: Good
This is basically for hunters, but pvp related so I figure more pvp people will look here than hunter forums so this might be a better place to get a response.

I can't seem to find any topics/articles anywhere about pet management in arena. When watching a lot of videos, people keep their pets on passive and I'm assuming have /petattack macroed into abilities or else they might just have a macro for /petattack and special abilities like web and stuff like that.

It also seems like pvp pets are more for their cc abilities than damage so should I spec my spider into survivability with bullheaded and roar of sacrifice?

(for the learning curve, I'm starting to get better, went 5-3 this week with my DK guildie in 2's, kited a lot better and was able to survive a bit longer when getting focused. And realizing that people aren't kidding when they say hunters have a **** ton of keybinds. I'm still working on mine as I continue to get used to playing pvp.)

Thanks for any advice.

Bind special pet abilities and petattack/follow.
Pet is used for it's special abilities and to keep people in combat, it's damage isn't important.

For what my non-hunter, ill-experienced opinion is worth (a cookie, maybe?), I second this. I don't face a lot of hunters but when I do, the pet's entire job seems to be to make sure I can never get a drink off. Plus usually it's a spider and they're ooky so it psychs me out a little.

It also used to be used to get hunters into combat so that rogues couldn't sap, but since 4.0.6, pet and hunter combat isn't tied together.

I believe you can still Intervene Sap/Blind, though. I've never faced any hunters good enough to do that, though. Smiley: frown

You dont want to keep your pet on holy paladins or resto shamans, they gain mana either from meleeing it or getting struck (mana shield procs).

But you also want to be aware when they are dropping combat to drink (send pet to attack at this time then pull it back) its alot to micromanage..I dont envy pet classes thats for sure.

You can also make a /petattack [@focus] macro that'll send your pet to attack your focus, which as a hunter should generally be a healer if it's a shaman/paladin.

This is just going to add to the never ending keybinds and macros that I still haven't mastered yet! Smiley: mad

I've actually been wondering all this myself recently. If I am to bind pet special abilities what one's are really effective in PvP? I understand if it's there it should be useful, but which ones are the most utilized.

I did bind my spider's web when I started, although I probably don't use it as often as I should. I try to keep my pet on the healer for the most part and switching it's targets when I need to. The problem is I only really have 1 pet attack macro at the moment so it isn't always smooth.

mouse button 4 & 5 for pet attack/follow. Modifier+mouse button 4/5 for attack focus and move to X.

As for what to bind: web, pin, bullheaded, roar of sacrifice, intervene, last stand. Depending on whether you use a crab or a spider.

I figure I will bind attack and follow to the mouse wheel left and right. As for special abilities I'll probably just make a macro with modifiers for that.

Mouse wheel left and right are for strafing, they're the ideal strafe buttons.

A is for traps and I can't even remember right now what I've got bound to D but probably a few things as well.
I prefer to have one hand for my movement and one for my actions, that way things make sense to me and I don't have to think about it.

You have them most **** up control scheme ever.

I use QWE and I still have ASD bound, because I'm lazy and already have more than enough binds.

I use WASD to move/strafe. I could rebind S but there have been a few circumstances (PVP tanking etc) where backpeddling is handy but I suppose S could be used for better keybinds. Still I have no problem coming up with enough keybinds to cover my needs

Q E R T F G C V Z X C ~ 1 2 3 4 5 6 comes to 18 minds. Add SHIFT modifier, thats 36, add ALT you're up to 54, a few CTRL modifiers in there, mouse buttons/scrolls with modifiers, you can reach 100+ but comfortably I can sit around 60-70

Stock UI has room for 60 abilities on your action bars all can be bound or macro'd to things, even with complex classes if you put a little time into your macros you should have room left over. If somehow you do run out of barspace I'd say there is too much clutter like 5 types of food, 4 mounts, multiple bandages and healthstones, all which can be macro'd into tighter binds

Now I use 1 button for mount whether its land/air/sea, it casts random mounts so I'm always on a different one. 2 buttons to drink/use mage food, 1 button to healthstone or bandage depending if I have a healthstone or not. Burst trinket macro'd to burst ability (zealotry) all that cleanup leaves me room to macro everything like aura dancing, focus macros, /cast [@myteammate] hand of freedom, etc

That's exactly what I was thinking, that seems like a very uncomfortable way to play. Since I'm so used to wasd for moving.

G13 FTW. I have the thumb stick bound to the arrow keys for forward, back, strafe left, strafe right. Move entirely with my thumb, turn entirely with my mouse, and all my fingers free for binds.

See, I never played any PC games aside from some RTS so I never used WASD, it's also why I've always used the mouse to turn in WoW I think, it just feels more natural to me to use my right hand for all movement and my left hand for all actions.
The fact that I can also use QWEASD for keybinds is a bonus because I've got fairly small hands so I can keep my keybinds nice and close together. (6, T, G, V are already a stretch to reach without moving my hand and really hard with modifiers)

I don't have very small hands but I do agree that 6, v, t, g, and even x, and z are hard to reach. Maybe z, and x for me since I have bigger hands, my fat fingers get in the way.

My hands aren't that big and i find v and b are fantastic binds, your thumb can find them pretty naturally. I tend to use v for procs and b for movement like blink or shadowstep. I use wasd for movement, i've been thinking of moving that a key or two right like esdf or rdfg cause i'm wasting my pinky finger at the moment. I could probably get used to binding the bottom keys from c to m as well.

That's true, v and b are pretty easy for my thumb but then what about spamming spacebar to jump endlessly for no reason!?

I guess my hands are kind of big, I can almost palm a basketball but not quite. I always hit V, G, T, with my index finger I love the V key though I still use it for its default thing of turning on/off nameplates because I toggle them like crazy in group PVP. Sometimes they are critical other times they get in my way.

6 is a bit of a stretch though its my least favorite keybind that I use, and for a long time I didnt even use it, I just used ~ 1 2 3 4 5 and the various letter keys that was close to WASD. For some reason I hate my CTRL binds, I try to never use them. Things like SHIFT-E are my favorites, and ALT modifiers are pretty comfortable for me too.
