Decided to roll a PvP server toon just for shoots and giggles and can't say that my XP isn't exactly like I thought it'd be so far. Got to 20 without issue due solely to the fact that you can't gank peeps in the newby zone but after that, well, it seems that no one on a PvP server is actually doing anything other then manning the borders of the newby zones and choke points in the hope of engaging in glorious combat with someone 40-60 levels lower then them.

Managed to make it past the blockades and proceeded to do some naked world wandering to pick up FPs and get some exploring and Halloween candy XP. Got ganked by peeps wandering the level 20-30 zones who were obviously in the 60+ range based off of their hit points.

Eventually made it through Felwood into Timbermaw Hold where a high 70s/80 mage caught me - thought he was just passing through but apparently not - he camped the toon. After 3 KIAs to him I logged out for some grub - 45m later I popped back in and the loser is still camping the corpse. O_o

So I take it that once you hit Outlands it's easy to level as anyone 50+ on a PvP server is in the 20-40 zones looking for lowbies to gank?

You're trying to level when there is literally nothing for level capped people to do. It's probably the worst possible time to be honest Smiley: grin

I've played on a PVP server since my first days of WoW. I've never really had that big of a problem. I've run into high levels who were farming that would usually kill me in a zone but they never camped me.

On pvp servers you'll always have your annoyances with people. Crossroad is constantly camped, Tarren Mill is too of course, but that's neutral so it's more of a pain in the *** if you level there. When you get to outlands you'll find that...uh, whatever that horde place in Hellfire Peninsula is.

I guess this is all assuming you are horde. I'm not sure what towns on alliance side are usually camped on pvp servers.

Its something you learn to deal with, if I were leveling again and got ganked on a fresh server I'd just alt tab for a while. Especially with the new LFG and XP in BGs theres all sorts of ways to avoid the actual world.

I've been frustrated a few times by gankers but I still prefer PVP servers I dont know why. You probably get a more competitive type of person on those servers and your average player probably has more interest in PVP since they actually rolled on a PVP server. Thats not to say there arent top PVPers on PVE servers but they are rare and probably wishing they had started on PVP servers. I started on PVE myself and after watching a bunch of videos decided PVP servers are where its at.

My server though has a bad faction imbalance it kind of sucks. I dont see many allies to fight out in the world. I transfered a single character of mine to alliance on that server just to see what it was like, its awful. But I love INSTANT BG queues as Alliance, thats the only reason I'm still there. I hate logging on to PVP and I sit in Dalaran for 10 minutes for every BG queue.

Horde take the time to run all the way to Goldshire just to camp it? I'm way to lazy to try and run that far. At least with allies camping Crossroads they can simply boat to Ratchet and have a little couple minute run there.

Calm down? I was laughing at you.

It's not my culture, btw. I only gank lowbies when they attack me when I'm flagged (I don't play on a PvP server).

Calm down Theo - I'm finding this more entertaining then anything - you should be laughing and enjoying the outside perspective of your culture.

Besides, as the Captain so astutely observed, I'm doing this from an Ally perspective, meaning that every single pointless and petty gank and camping incident I record is being inflicted upon me by my fellow Horde, so it's not like this is simply a "rip on Allies and PvP" thread - I'm walking 80 levels in the other side's LW crafted moccasins.

With how unbalanced high level vs lowbie combat is, it only takes a very small number high level chars from one of the factions to make an entire region unplayable to the opposing faction. That is unless you can "find a pvp solution" (aka: relog to your level 80 PvP char).

(ok, who am I kidding, if you're on a PvP server all of your level 80 chars are PvP chars)

(unless you're a clueless carebear)

(it does suck if you don't have level 80s and nobody with level 80s cares about helping you)

There's tricks to get around all that, on PvP servers you have to level 2 chars instead of one, in 2 different regions. If you get camped by a high level you evade and escape, if it becomes impossible then you just switch to your other char.

There's also one other thing when you level on a PvP server, your leveling is done using a 100% pvp oriented spec and pvp viable gear. Because, when a quest on contested territory sends you to kill 10 zombies, it's not the zombies that could kill you, I'd be surprised if the zombies actually did. Or you might just disregard what I just said, people who do, like me, will just roll over you with the same ease you vaporize the zombies.

But with all things said, I have been a fan of World PvP and PvP servers for a long time but I think it is no longer worth it. I feel that World PvP is ruined mostly because of how flying mounts introduce a terrible mechanic for World PvP. It is also not very good that people can have chars in both factions. It isn't something that will be removed, and I don't see any fix or even an intention to fix this, or ****, even an acknowledgement from blizz that they understand that flying mounts introduce a detrimental mechanic for world pvp.

So really, take it from me, at this point in the game, with all the changes that have affected world PvP, PvP servers are no longer worth it. The only world PvP worth playing now is the world PvP scenarios like wintergrasp which prevents flying during the battles. I'm not going to cry about it anyway, I enjoyed while it lasted. It may be time for me to say I've played wow enough and play battlefield instead.

I got Starcraft but I find I'm not enjoying the build order style of it. After having played Company of Heroes I can't go back to resource collecting base simulators. But if you're cool with resource collecting base simulators then Starcraft isn't bad at all, and the campaign was pretty nice.

PVP realms suck - everyone claims that they are more exciting - I don't think getting ganked by a toon 40-50 levels above you is fun. And failing to complete a daily quest because there are 8-10 of the other faction there trying to kill you isn't exciting.

I just think it's lame.

I tend to play on pvp servers cause i think the tradeoff is worth it. You might get ganked or camped occasionally by a level capped player but there is generally a solution. Call in a guildie, log your main or just play a different character or game or do some pressups (i swear, working out is as addictive as WoW. I'm reaching for the weights every time i get on a flight point these days).

But it's worth it for the cool level world pvp you can sometimes get, especially when both sides are /bowing, /saluting and such. Being stealthed behind two players standing by a questgiver in zangarmarsh and deciding to take em both on :D

It was a lot of fun before. Because there generally is more similar-level world pvp than high vs lowbie. And when confronted with high vs lowbie situations you could log your main and abuse them a bit until they leave.

But where there's flying mounts it doesn't work that way, you log on to your main and they just hover above you doing emotes until you get tired of waiting.

So you find yourself in the shameful situation of standing in the middle of contested territory, staring at an enemy that is stalking you and challenging you, and unable to do anything to attack him or interact with him or resolve combat by any means.

He can decide to attack you but you can't decide to attack him. It is almost as if he managed to be in a PvP server in contested territory and not be PvP flagged. This is a horrid mechanic for world PvP.

You could go there and post in the suggestions forums asking for all chars of every class to get a PvP ensnare ability identical to the one in warcraft 3 crypt fiends, that would solve it, but at this moment if you post what I have posted here Blue would answer "this is QQ, don't do it". And I can't blame them because at the moment they're flooded with so much QQ that anything that says "this here isn't looking good" instantly looks very similar to the thousands of QQ posts they've been flooded with over the last 6 months.

As I have stated above I have been playing on a PvP server since I started wow and really haven't had much of a problem. In Azeroth you get the occasional a-hole who will gank you but they usually move on. I get more camped by people who are my level trying to quest in the same area I am, and we usually battle it out for awhile until one of us finishes or one of us gives up and moves on.

As for Outlands/Northrend, I really don't have much of a problem questing in those zones and getting ganked. I usually get ganked just by sitting in Thrallmar and having allies constantly attacking it. But most of Outlands is uninhabited except for people trying to power their chars to Northrend.

Now I'm back on a PVE server and while I'm happy there and don't miss my old server overall, I do miss playing on a PVP server. I love world PVP, and I loved that on the PVP server, I never knew when even 1 guy ganking lowbies in TM was going to escalate into a big battle. Even if you don't have an 80 to bring out or guildies to help you, if you can get the ganker to attack you in a town and get the NPC's involved, oftentimes people with WordDefense on will start flying in.

I never could bring myself to gank people and generally only fought in defense of my own territories, but I don't think gankers are necessarily just being jerks. Sometimes they're trying to get some action going. Sure, they could do that somewhere where there are 80's instead, but killing lower levels (and their quest givers) generates a different kind of response than attacking someone your own level in a fair fight; it's just a better way to start a brawl. Plus certain places have become so much the norm for world PVP that it's just easier to get things going there. If I see Thrallmar or Tarren Mill or XR lighting up in WorldDefense, I can be more confident that it's not just a one-off thing and it won't be a waste of my time to fly out there.

P.S. It was weeks after I transferred before it dawned on me that I didn't need my trinket equipped at all times.

If I doing something in a lowbie zone and see a low level horde I will usually kill them unless I am in a rush to get somewhere. If I'm farming low level mats I try and remember who I've killed so I don't accidentally start camping them. I will still mess with them of course as it is amusing.

Using CC and non-damaging attacks is a personal favorite.

But ya PvP or tank gear with trinket is the norm for doing stuff in the world on a PvP server. Low level world PvP is pretty sweet and a nice break from questing.

I did have some horde help me kill Chillmaw on my tank, I didn't need help I think they just want him to die faster, so I helped them afterwards as they had no tank. But normally it is attack on sight as they will try and kill you otherwise.

I find the best thing you can do to low level players is just casually stalk them. Don't attack them. Just follow them and get dangerously close to them.

I play on both server (RP and PVP) and running around PVP flagged on a RP server will get you the same action as a PVP server. Go near any major cities of the opposite faction flagged and you are guarantying some good fights. Most lowbies will be happy to fight you for a change of pace. You can even organize a nice epic RP battle with the opposite guilds.

You don’t need a PVP server to PVP.

I actually did this when I started on a PVP server, that was the beginning of my mage and rogue. Kept them about 5 levels apart in different parts of the world. No particular emphasis on who to play first. I knew eventually I wanted them both level capped anyways so I just went by feel. Also have a banker alt on the new server and mail EVERYTHING that you can AH to them. Partial stacks of cloth, clams, whatever. If I was getting camped I could switch to my other character and play in a different part of the world, or hop on my banker, put stacks together, check prices, list auctions, collect mail/gold, bid on disenchantables.

And now with BGs and dungeon finder there is so much to do. Who cares if you get ganked a few times, its not that bad. Theres always other things to do.

Run near any opposing faction city flagged on any server you'r going to get attacked, thats kind of a given. The OP is talking about getting ganked by higher levels, not choosing when to flag and going after lowbies.

This is my only toon on a new server so no level 80 big brothers to avenge it.

I choose the PvP server that was marked "new" so figured I'd have some time before it was overrun by bored 80s - apparently it isn't all that new.

This is exactly how I got Wrath of the Horde.

The lowbies didn't attack, but it did get kind of trivial because almost all the 80s in a PvE server are PvE chars.

They seem to think that with their ICC25 armor 2v1 versus a lone warlock that has far less "gearscore" and is sporting a 232 weapon would be an easy fight even if they don't know how to PvP. So it turns out to be an easy fight for me.

I could 3v1 them too with enough space, like on the ship in stormwind, or inside some structure with stairs and a few rooms like some of the human inns, but in cities you tend to get flooded with guards, which limits your movement a lot.

I don't think you need to be amazing at PvP to steamroll the PvE level 80s as if they were lowbies, just any average PvPer will do.

Well the zombie apocalypse will inevitably happen after all, so I'm sure those threads will pop up eventually Smiley: grin

On topic, the only "fix" I can think of for pvp servers and low lvl ganking, is to just place a limit on how far someones lvl can be under yours to be able to attack them (unless they attack you, of course). That way it would still have that world pvp feel when you're out questing and come across people of the opposing faction doing the same, but without worry of a high lvl coming along and 1shotting you for 100x your max health Smiley: lol

Was happily playing with a large group of mobs when an even level shadow priest decided that five on one was just his speed and joined the fun. This was obviously the first time this guy had ever played a SP as despite the fact that he had me at half health and with four mobs beating on me he only just barely managed to win (ironically enough he got his "first HK" achievement off of the incident - not exactly an honorable kill IMO).

Was it an even-level kill? Was it your fault for being in a pack of four mobs?

Answer is yes to both.

You strike me as the kind of PvPer that thinks they're good but make up excuses for why they lost rather than, "gg, I missed a [ability], nice fight".

Can't tell you how kids like you make me laugh. When someone beats me in a duel (happens frequently with some of the PvPers I hang out with), I let them know it was a good duel. Nobody beats me in world PvP without a group (I'm a rogue, vanish and run away is always a last resort), but could I communicate, I'd tell them it was a good fight too.

You're the kind of person that whines "OMG BLIND IS CHEAP!!!1!" or "OMG IM LAGGING SO BAD" or "omg rogues are op" etc, aren't you?

Figures.

This isn't necessarily a rant aimed at you personally, Rusttle; I dislike anyone that gets mad when they lose and don't look at themselves first. I've had people in arena blame me when they were keyboard turning, I've had people in BGs yelling at me because I "stole their kill" when I was trying to help them. It's pretty immature to act like getting beat in PvP is a big deal, even Neilyo, Akrios, Unmercy, and the rest of the top PvPers in the world get beat.

It's the nature of the game to lose sometimes. Whine about it less.

Then you've obviously not read any of my discussions of PvP then - I suck at it - plane and simple. I have gotten somewhat better over the years so while I wont put myself in the bottom 20% anymore I wouldn't put myself at the tail end of the top 50% either.

Seeing as how you're what the PvP server folks call the "care bear server" type I don't see you as really being qualified to talk here.

Remember kid, this isn't a prepared setting where you get the chance to swap mindsets from PvE to PvP and you've got everything ready and set up on a toon built for PvP with all the shiny toys. This is you're minding your own business and someone jumps you. Sure, you know you're in the bad part of town so you can't say you're surprised that it happened, however, it's usually a surprise when it happens.

*yawn* Learn to read Theo - I made it pretty clear that when the odds were even I didn't win because I was some leet PvP geek, I won because the other guy sucked worse then I do. Whether that was due to the lack of knowledge of his class (which you'll note was emphasized) or his lack of experience at PvP (the fact I was his first HK means he's never even taken this toon to a BG) or a combo of the two, I don't know.

Quote:

You might want to remove the line "You're the kind of person" if you're not aiming it at someone who made it abundantly clear that he wasn't that kind of person then.

So in addition to learning to read please learn to write as well.

No clue what you're talking about with the former, as for the latter well, idiots are idiots.

Here's a quarter, buy a clue Theo.

There's a big difference between the two of us and that's that I'm willing to actually give the PvP server a go.

The twinks claimed that they were only twinking for the thrill of fighting the best of the best and when Blizz gave them their own twink servers they all retired the toons because not being able to gank folks who didn't stand a chance wasn't any fun for them.

So now I've set up on a PvP server to test the claims of those folks that they really are these heroic warriors engaging each other in honorable world combat and not simply a bunch of gankers who'll only jump someone if the person is lower then them, wounded, outnumbered or otherwise at a severe disadvantage.

Put your money were your mouth is boy - you've got just shy of three weeks with nothing to do in game so roll a toon up on a PvP server and do it via world/quest XP like I am and not simply hiding in the instance/BG queue till you ding 80.

Then once you've had that joy tell me that my assessment so far of PvP servers is wrong. ;-P

But was it honorable - no.

There is no honour in world PvP, it's kind of the point.

Just because the bulk of PvPers are cowards doesn't mean that you still can't be honorable about the whole thing - you don't have to gank grey players, you don't have to corpse camp people for no reason, you don't even have to only attack people who are wounded/fighting mobs/outnumbered - those are all the acts of losers, not PvPers.

And making a forum post to complain about them is makes you an immature whiner. Serously Rusttle the only thing I have gotten from this thread is you need to grow up and get over yourself. Just because you play on a PvP server now and "don't gank people" and only "fight honorably" doesn't make you as hardcore as you think you are.

It's just a name. As you acknowledged, you can get HKs by 'dishonourable' means. It's just a handy name for a mechnaic designed to remove any incentive, save enjoyment, from camping low level characters.

The point is a sense of constant danger and war. You don't get this if you never attack people in any situation apart from that of utter preparedness. You are not meant to be prepared; it is supposed to be spontaneous. I shouldn't have to point out the idiot strawman ("only attack") or the other idiot fallacy (engaging in asymmetric combat makes you bad how, exactly?), but maybe this has been enlightening for you.

You clearly don't get it - that's fine. Just stop crying about it and we're cool.

I've played on PvP servers. What I found was generally 98% of the players were completely terrible (worse than on my PvE server), and I would own the **** out of them.

I roll in PvP gear/spec anyway. Why would you be grinding/PvEing with a group/raid spec on a server where PvP is possible at any time?

I played on a PvP server for well over a year on an alt, as well as 2-3 months with my main (Arthas US, in case you care).

See Rusttle? You just made an *** out of yourself by assuming that I hadn't played on a PvP server. I moved back because the friend that I moved to PvP with quit the game.

I can handle PvP servers. I'm actually a good PvPer, so world PvP doesn't bother me. Getting one-shotted by max-level players sucks pretty hard, but I don't lose to even-level players in world PvP.

The constant fear of being mercilessly faceraped by a random high level is the charm of being on a PvP server. It separates the sheep from the sheeple. You either get paranoid and aneurysms, or you get better.

Been on PvP servers since Vanilla, but I've also played a little on PvE servers. The first time I saw a "yellow" dancing inside the enemy village, I decided that it wasn't what I was looking for.

Red means dead.

That's the way I see it as well. I couldn't imagine being on a PVE server and having the enemy stand right next to me, taunting me and being able to do nothing about it. Is it safer? Of course it is. But is it more fun? Well... Yeah I'd imagine it's that too when you're not able to get ganked. But that's not the point! It just doesn't feel right.

I don't get the point of going out an killing low lvls for fun though. I guess just to be a **** and make them hate life? I'll admit, I've killed my fair share of low lvls too, but it's usually just a side effect of them getting in the way while plowing Tarren Mill or some such place into the ground to draw the attention of bigger fish in the area Smiley: laugh

*Disclaimer: No fish nor bigger fishes were harmed in the plowing into the ground of Tarren Mill or some such places*

I am new to all this, but isn't there rules to this? It is not considered a bannable offense to ruin someones enjoyment of the game?

Personally once I am high level I will not kill a lowbie, it should make you feel embarresed. It would equivalent of me in real life to pick a fight with someone in grade 1. You should be ashamed.

I would have hoped there would be some form of pvp etiquette, but I guess not. Last night I was in an area where a group of 80's went around killing all the people questiong, all the npcs so people couldn't do quests etc, it was kind of pathetic of them. I guess blizzard never thought of putting in some type of measure that you can't attack someone x amount of levels below you unless flagged?

PvP servers sound like fun, thats why I moved to one with my friend on it, but seems a bit of a mess until you get to 80.

Basically the only rule on PvP servers is if you're getting camped, quit your ******** and log onto your 80 and deal with the person camping you.

Not everyone does have an 80? I loathe leveling characters (and playing characters other than my rogue) and I have two, and multiple characters in the 60s and 70s.

Outside of your asinine assumption that I was saying having an 80 is your only recourse, you can log out and either play another toon, ask for help from your guild, or log out completely and do something else.

I hate leveling and I've got 6 ******* 80's...
On PvP servers you either find a PvP solution or you're **** out of luck and *GASP* you might have to go do somtheing else for 15 minutes.

Oh yeah, and you know how often I've been ganked by higher levels while leveling 3 characters from 1 to 80, a DK to 73, my shaman from 75-80, a warrior from 1-62 and some other random characters on a PvP server?
Less than 20 times for sure, it might even be countable on both hands. That probably cost me less time in corpseruns than Rusttle spent whining and moaning about it in this thread alone.

So in short: get over yourself you ****.

On PvP servers, the only thing you're not allowed to do is consistently camp quest NPCs as this is considered griefing.

Everything else PvP related, the solution is to "call your allies and deal with it through PvP".
