Bad PvPers...Follow

This guy broke every rule of PvP tonight, so I thought I'd make an educational thread aimed at the four rules of PvP.

1) Know your gear. In my example BGtard, he has no idea what he's socketing for. He has a crit Battlemaster trinket, crit gems, crit/stam gems, etc. Know what stats you're looking for.

2) Know your spec. Cookie-cutter PvP specs are cookie-cutter for a reason. Taking the 3 points out of Vile Poisons to put in Ruthlessness isn't smart, since a lot of rogue's unmitigated damage comes from Wound Poison procs. Take points out of Lethality first.

3) Don't continually go after someone after they /spit, /rofl, /clap, /golfclap, etc at you. Especially after they just wiped the floor with you and they only had 50% of their HP when you opened. Case in point, I'm at 50% HP, out of stealth and I get cheap shotted. I trinket, gouge, vanish, premed/ambush, ks, rupture, dismantle and shortly thereafter he's on the floor.

This didn't just happen once either. TWELVE FREAKIN TIMES. In fairness and full disclosure, he killed me once after two spriests and a boomkin got me to 100 HP and I was eating.

Screenshot

4) Just because you have 100,000 lifetime HKs doesn't mean you're god's gift to PvP. It just means you play AV a lot. To go along with this, don't ever think you're the best player in a BG, as eventually you'll run into someone as I did that's much better than you and they'll destroy you (ran into Tosan in S3 in an AB match... yeah). Assumptions about another person's skill is bad.

Just thought I'd share. I was laughing for the last half of the BG (I was at stables and he'd rez and come straight for me) when he was futilely trying to get at least one legit kill on me.

Edit: oh, also. WORST PREMADE EVER (the team playing against us).

I encounter these guys every time I log on a BG or dungeon, welcome to WOW player base. Most players are casual and they suck and they don’t care...they are having fun and that's ok with me.

This is something that always amuses me. As you can imagine, I rarely kick anyone's ***. But I do sometimes prove hard enough to kill that someone nerdrages and decides to stalk me. You'd think after half a dozen unsuccessful attempts they'd get embarassed and leave, but it just seems to make them madder. My favorite is that on several occasions I've had people stop attacking my flag carrier and let him run away, because they had such tunnel vision about killing me. If it was peel off the healer while my friend kills the FC, fine, but I'm talking about letting him run away alone, unopposed, to cap the flag.

You also need to know your class for yourself, though, because most of the PVP cookie cutters you'll find through research are for arena. The optimal arena spec is not necessarily the optimal BG spec, and you need to know which talents to tweak accordingly if you're only doing the latter. One of the fun things about Cataclysm is that we'll start seeing battleground specs separate from arena specs.

1) Check. I have a trick for knowing what I should gem/enchant on my rogue. I armory a rogue called "Korz". He's not the best but I'm barely learning the class and he's played Rogue since he was a baby with a pacifier so he knows enough.

2) Check. Credit to Cookie Cutter builds in this case because I'm barely learning rogue so I just went WoWWiki for it.

3) Well that depends!!

I don't really care about how I look on the scoreboard, to me winning is winning and learning how to better fight a certain class means winning a little more often. So sometimes I come across someone who is really good and I take on opportunities to fight against him to learn a little more about how to fight a good player from his class, as long as that doesn't interfere with the team objective.

4) Actually, try BG healing and you'll see a lot of surprising things.

BG healing tends to be a very Darwinistic activity. The least useful and the ones that are harder to heal you let them die in favor of keeping up the most useful and the ones that are easier to heal. So you check your teammates to make a pre-battle evaluation, but sometimes you get surprised.

Once I had a 14K HP mage which I determined would be so difficult to keep alive that it wouldn't be worth the effort. (Since he's likely to get crit for 15K anyway).

I have no idea how he managed but he was throwing every cooldown to stay alive so he ended up being alive a lot even if he was the last one in the priority order of heals. Also, he was consistently at the right place doing the thing that was useful to the team instead of wandering/afking/etc. I gave him a much higher priority on the heals right away.

I had this happen to me the other day. I was defending stables by myself on my lock, when this other lock comes speeding over the bridge on this mount. I Shadowfury (don't know if it was necessarily the wisest opener, but I was expecting to get feared and and had my succy out, so no bubble), Immolate, Conflagrate, Chaos Bolt, and he drops. He got a couple of DoTs on me, so I sat down and ate while they wore off.

A minute later this guy is back again, with the same results. Then it happens a 3rd time, and a fourth, and a fifth...

The thing that starts to strike me is the guy is doing pretty much the exact same thing each time. Now I'm no PvP expert, but variety being the spice of life, and not repeating the same thing over and over again when it fails, and such. I never once got feared, stunned, drained, etc. He'd come over the bridge, stand there and DoT me up, I'd drop him, he'd release, and I'd have a snack while the DoTs wore off.

It was fascinating.

Oh and we lost the BG btw. Darn level 70 twinks. Smiley: tongue

I do go after people sometimes, but it's not good tactics. There are only a certain number of losses I can sustain before I stop caring about winning conventionally for a while (basically, if I have to farm a lot of honour, as when I was getting honour arena gear). I then pick an arbitrary goal, like making some guy's life a misery or killing four guys at once or killing as many trolls as I can in a row. At this point, alcohol generally becomes involved.

I don't do so in a way that gets me killed a lot, though, because my idea of persecuting someone isn't handing them my **** on a plate over and over. If I can't kill them 1v1 at least most of the time then they don't become a target. This is pretty much never a problem.

I'm not sure I agree, depending on what you mean. You have to make decisions, whether to call for back-up, whether you an take the node, before you know how good everyone is. If you are better than the vast majority of people and there's no stealthers then calling for backup is a bad idea, as you're using up another player for the sake of removing a very small chance of failure.

There's bots that do that. Bots are very difficult to tell from extremely bad players except when they end up just standing alone and idle at their camping spot. Another telling sign is that they tend to attack pets furiously and focus on pets even if there's other players around and the pet is a voidwalker.

When I find someone who I think is a bot I ask team members their opinion if they think it is a bot and then start sending whispering messages to the person who I think is a bot. If he doesn't answer I create a char on his servers and send him party invites, and if he doesn't accept or decline I create a ticket.

On the ticket I include:
1) I think it is a bot. Explaining bot behavior.
2) Other players think so too.
3) Does not reply tells.
4) Does not accept nor decline party invites.

Ya I wondered about it myself. I mean it wasn't the exact same motions or anything, but there certainly wasn't any change in tactics. I got different DoTs, more or less at different times, I got curse of exhaustion once Smiley: confused, and he moved the last time instead of standing still.

Still though, it was pretty odd.

Yes, I've seen bots that move while attacking and bots that heal teammates. They move if you go outside range of their abilities. What they don't do is run away or hide behind LoS or run to the powerup bonuses to grab them, or run to healers asking for a heal, those are usually telling signs that the character isn't a bot.

Just interjecting; assumptions about another person's skill, assuming they're reasonable, can be a great help in determining your moves. It's assumptions about your own skill you need to be watching out for, staying in line with the example you gave.

Missed two -

1) Epic PvE gear does not equal you being an epic PvPer

2) Just because you're packing 1k+ resil doesn't mean you're an epic PvPer

Yes, gear does help and against someone of equal skill will hands down make the difference, but it only makes that big difference if the other guy isn't better then you.

Both also true, unless you're an Arcane mage (for #1).
