I had the exact same thought a day ago when I saw this news on WoWInsider. Since most of my gold is invested in mounts and pets I felt very secure. Then I remembered the caging mechanic and wondered how intelligent these SOBs really are. Sadly, if they are crafty enough to hack your account chances are they will know about caging pets as well.
