It seems to be at a somewhat rudimentary point, but also seems to have been developed for expansion. On Tumblr I was seeing people with actual stuff painted on their companions (like a target graphic a droid), but that could have actually been them modding game files. For the time being, I'm assuming that's not standard.

This stupid thread actually got me playing it again. Smiley: madSmiley: madSmiley: mad

Here's how I look at it. You've played the game since 2004, as I have too, thats 9 years of your life put into a game, of course its going to get old for you, I mean heck, look how far call of duty is, when wow was released they were only on the 2nd call of duty. There is noone who can say that any mmo did it better, look at subscriptions. They do prove that wow is by far the most successful game ever, there has never been a game that has sold as much or made a company as much money as wow.

The thing is though, that I played it for many many years. I didn't get sick of it until they started watering it down. I actually enjoyed cruising around old content, and exploring parts and quests that hadn't been around since Vanilla. I loved finding elites I had never heard of and stumbling upon quests that took ridiculous amounts of effort. They gave me something to look forward to, a challenge, something unseen for years (by most at least), and it made things interesting.

Then along came Cataclysm and "polish" which removed all of the loose ends, simplified quests, and suddenly I didn't even have to put effort into what I was doing. Even at max level the level 60 stuff was interesting because it was an artifact, something to discover. I hadn't played in Vanilla, and never really raided in BC, so for me it was all new and exciting even if it was old news to some. There were many factions and quest lines that were ridiculous... but because we were now a few expansions beyond them they were not required for anything. So that meant, for those of us who like exploring and wanted a long term goal, or some lesser known area nobody visited anymore, we could do those things if we chose.

But then Cataclysm removed it totally. I wasn't going to sit down and hardcore grind out Zandalari rep, but that little reputation slider gave me something to look forward to as I visited it over the years. Now, all of that is either gone, or completed in an hour. And there is no point to it! I can just skip that area and move on to next-expansion content if I were interested in just leveling or experience.

It's especially great for anyone who has developed a game where you're apt to care about cosmetics.

I mean, let's face it, Tera put a lot into selling its character models and their physics-defying lack of clothing.

And if you're someone who wants to have a Jedi, you're probably someone who is going to care what your Jedi looks like.

That creates a LOT of potential for RMT customization options. Particularly in the context of TOR, where you'll see your character up close all the time in cutscenes.
I'm surprised no one has mentioned LotRO in this F2P conversation. Turbine took a lot of grief when it went F2P, but I always thought it did a pretty decent job with it. Lots of cosmetics. And mounts. Every time I logged into the forums it seems they were announcing a new mount.

A lot of people playing that game are deep into the cosmetics aspect. It was the first game I've played (there may be others, there are many I haven't played!) that offered the ability to show a cosmetic outfit while equipping an armor set. And dyes were another aspect of the cosmetics thing.

They made it possible to save three different cosmetic sets that you could easily switch between. As long as you kept the cosmetic pieces somewhere in your inventory (bank was fine), you could wear them. I'm not really into RP, but I soon had a Sunday-go-to-meetin' outfit, a riding outfit, and a battle outfit saved. I could see how that really drove the sales of cosmetic items, though I never partook in that aspect (purchase) myself.

Yeah the removal of Zandalari and Shen'dralar kind of stinks. In the case of the Zandalari it makes sense storywise I guess. But what stopped them from having the Zandalari splitting up in two groups? One you can raise your reputation with and one that is allied to the Mogu.

There are still the Goblin reps, Ravenhold and the Warsong and Arathi factions if you want something to work on for a longer period of time. I haven't finished any of those but plan on doing so some time. Hope they don't remove/streamline them as well.

I mentioned it earlier, I just don't have quite enough experience to go into more detail than what I've noted. I know they have a lot of cosmetic options, and I know you purchase access to content in small blocks. But that's about it.

I remember very little about LOTRO's F2P, other than it caused a bit of a stir. I remember at one point it was the reason I tried out the game, never made it very far through the game though.

Didn't they have gated content at one point? Like to access a higher level zone you either had to pay them a couple bucks or subscribe? Maybe I'm remembering something else, it's been a while. The move certainly worked out well for them though. Kept them going and such.

Content is gated. I don't know to what extent that is still true. You also CAN earn turbine points to unlock content without subscribing, but it's a LONG process. I wouldn't really hold the game up as the best example of F2P. They made great choices regarding customization, and terrible choices regarding content.

Well, for not being that familiar with it, you just summed it up pretty well.

I mentioned it because you had raised the issue of F2P being perfect for games where cosmetics are important to the players, and I always felt LotRO was a good example of just that.

I've played it some, but never really got too far (as in, I doubt I ever hit level 15). I've glanced through the store, and that was the impression I was getting.
