Spam ThrottleFollow

#1 Dec 11 2012 at 4:46 PM Rating: Good
I have finally got to the point where i cant even bring myself to join trade chat anymore due to the ten billion <WE ARE A GUD GUILD> (lvl25) JOIN MA GUILD! recruitment spam that has flooded the channels these days. So i decided to try some chat filter addons to see if i could fix a workaround to this problem. I tried using a popular one called Spam Throttle, because on the curse page for it, the author posted posted that he had updated it for MoP to block all "****" threads, as well as the Thunderfury ones, followed by saying "You can go into the .lua file and edit it - do a search for Thunderfury, and you'll see the blocks I put in. You can add your own if you want - just copy that line of code and put whatever you want in there. Reloading the UI will refresh the code so you can test it." Soo after downloading Notepad ++ and finding his line on the thunderfury and **** section, i copied it, then created new lines, replacing thunderfury with "recruiting" and "Guild names" as well as trying to just use "<" since EVERY recruiting message has < > in it, however none of this has worked to block ANY of the recruitment from my chat... anyone able to offer some help would be MUCH appreciated

Pretty much this.

Or do like I did. Move trade into it's own window and place it behind everything. Then a world of headaches is just a tab away.

only problem with that is with my schedule i pug for raiding 99% of the time, and that gets rid of the people who are trying to fill a current raid throgh that channel

I've always found that /ignore worked well enough to prune down the constant spam to a minor inconvenience since most of the guild spam was perpetuated by a dozen or so individuals.

Blocking lines completely can be troublesome because of the unintended consequences blocking words like "recruiting" and whatnot might bring. I'd suggest making the trade chat a separate window and placing it behind the general chat. The recruitment spam is annoying, indeed, but I find the "Casino now open. 66-99 double gold back. 100, triple gold back. No scam. Minimum 100g" /yell spam in Stormwind much more annoying.

This is how I've set up my chat:

Yeah, yeah, laugh at the "Friends: 0" thing. I hate you.

Trade chat is only visible if I choose it to be, and even then it's still spam throttled. Curse is down right now, so I can't really find a true spam blocker, but unless you actually use the trade chat, there's no reason to bother with the headache. Just remove trade chat from view if you're annoyed by the constantly scrolling wall of text there.

Edit: Personally, I find the casino spam in /yell more annoying than the trade chat spam. I've had to move to the Dwarven District in Stormwind because of it. Fortunately, advertising casinos/gambling isn't allowed by Blizzard, so I report those. Smiley: grin

Yeah, I don't know what the Hell is up with Casinos these days.

I've been playing pretty solidly since BC (I started in early Vanilla, but only played a little here-and-there) and I have very rarely, if ever seen any casino spam.

You'd have the occasional "give me 10g for a wrapped present, maybe win a prize!" scam, but not outright casinos.

.......until just a few months ago. Then they all popped up like wildfire.

It's almost like those guys who ran the FFXI casinos quit FFXI and came here to WoW and started their BS in WoW.

Or maybe it's that MoP finally allowed these casino scammers to actually get ahold of some starting capital to run their casinos, since the people running casinos obviously don't have any other way to make money (otherwise they'd made plenty without having to resort to using a casino).

Either way, there's a easy way to get rid of casinos: Turn off /yell.

I haven't seen one useful thing ever come through the /yell channel yet, and turning off /yells doesn't block NPC /yells, only player ones. 99.9% of everything I see on /yell is spam, sexual stuff, or other junk I don't care about, so good riddance!

As for Trade... meh.

Block individual guild names? You'd have to keep adding to the LUA every time you see a new guild spamming for recruitment, but you'd eventually block enough of them that much shouldn't come through.

You'd think, that SURELY, someone would have made an add-on that allows you to expand it while in-game, an add-on that parses a list outside of the LUA code or something.

I'm leveling 2 alts just for their profs, BS/mining and Alchemy/herbing, doing archaeology on the side just for the exp and gold. (Someday they might turn into real alts, dunno) They are unguilded, and I have guild invites blocked. Does that stop the /whispers tho? Nooo.. Usually they leave me alone if I just say 'no ty'
There are a few tho...they argue with me. "You need a guild! Why not? We're cool, you'd like us, I'll pay you to join." Smiley: rolleyes
Trade...I usually ignore it, but sometimes just watch it scroll by. It can get funny sometimes, otherwise just stop reading it.

Occasionally, rarely, I sit in SW and watch trade chat, and see these people whose names I don't know talking **** or talking stupid, or bragging, and I think back to four or five years ago and how the talk is the same, but the names I know are gone.

All those great players and who knows where they are or if they're even playing any longer.

Hey you kids! Get off my lawn!! Damn kids got no respect.

Guess I'm the odd man out here. I actually have an addon to let me see trade chat from anywhere in the world, in all of its thunderfurious glory.

I basically have the same setup as Mazra (elvui and all that good stuff), only I have loot/trade combined on the right side.
