So, I'm sitting here in a bit of a bored mood and just poking around things trying to get myself "into" the mood to do something.

I was playing WoW earlier, but I did everything I aimed to do today and despite there being things I know I "should" do, I for the life of me can't really bring myself to actually "do" them. I think about em, and then just before I go to do it, I'm "blaah I don't really feel like doing this..."

1). My Alliance Shaman. My Alliance is far behind my Horde in terms of Alchemy and Inscription due to the fact I don't have any herbalists leveled yet. I did a little with my Shaman earlier, but dang. I don't know why, but Enhance Shamans seem so... weak in Jade Forest. She's wearing full 377 PvP gear, with a couple purchased 372 rings, a BoE 390 fist, and a 372 off-hand axe. I dunno why the heck she's getting half-killed, but then that area right outside Paw'don Village is kinda retarded, where they have the taskmasters + 4 orcs ganging up on you simultaneously. Got killed there a couple times earlier, and it kinda killed the mood. Mana regen is slow, the heals don't heal for very much, and I pretty much MUST have 4x+ Maelstrom before I heal, or my mana goes dry fast. So I'm kinda "bleh" with that. I want to level an Herbalist so I can finally get started, but yet Enhance isn't doing it for me, at least not 85+. 70-80 Shaman feels simply awesome, I dunno what happens between 80 and 85 that suddenly kills it for me, TBH.

2). My Alliance Skinner/LW: Death Knight, almost 86.. perhaps its because I've been playing my Horde DK so much trying to get him Revered with Golden Lotus by the time 5.1 comes out so I can get double rep with all of my characters? Not sure. I just can't bring myself to do it.

And a few other things I "should" do, but just can't get into it.

Outside of WoW, I check my usual pure-text roleplay area, nobody I know is online. Blah.

I purchased BF3 last night, after seeing countless awesome/hilarious videos on Youtube, but... my mom's currently WoW and if I try downloading anything, she'll get pings of 800+ and she will get quite angry with me for that. lol.

Anyways, I found some old videogame music I'm listening to right now, and I just had a thought:

A part of me misses the old Console RPG days, when you had awesome music to make your ears feel real good. I found these on my HDD:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Rawu-cE5iEU (warning: turn your volume down a little, the track is a bit loud)

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qmwM3B8Ss8c (this one, you might have to turn up a little)

And that got me to thinking.. sometimes when I'm playing WoW, I wish the peeps who did the music for WoW would stick a few heart-pounding fast-paced tracks in WoW. I mean, there's the Pandaria PvP theme and it is "OK" but I can't really say its 'heart-pounding', though. Nothing that makes me think "oh crap, I'm in serious trouble" when they start to play.

Yes, I realize one can insert their own music into WoW, but usually a piece is composed for a specific mood and style; sticking outside music into any game (not just WoW) is like having a second artist drawing something into a painting done by another artist -- it just 'feels' out of place, no matter how good it sounds.

So anyways, uh... thoughts/etc welcome, I'm just bored and looking for something to do/talk about.

About music: I sometimes shut off the sound in WoW and listen to LastFM or a similar streaming service. In the US and UK the service is free, and the downloadable streamer is also free. It does an autoshuffle based on keywords and can give you some nice surprises. My music is smooth jazz, tho, and I don't know what kind of death metal selection it has (or whatever kind of music you normally listen to).

In terms of not feeling motivated, try an experiment such as rolling a new toon and skipping all the quests but only farming rares in order to level. The gnome/dwarf starting areas are great for this, because the gnome area includes Gibblewilt, the Caverndeep Looter, Great Father Arctikus, and Timber, while the dwarf 1-10 area includes Edan the Howler, Bjarn and the rare trogg whose name I forget at the heart of Gol'bolar Quarry caverns. Just by farming those rares a few times each, you can hit level 10 in about an hour, especially if you have loom shoulders for the 10% XP boost. Just a suggestion.

I have never had WoW's music on. I only do that with console (i.e. 1 player) games. Otherwise I usually use Pandora, or if I'm fishing I'll watch Netflix.

I've tried putting on other music, but...

1). It drowns out the in-game sound effects usually,
2). It just doesn't.. "feel right" like I mentioned above.

I just wish their composers would consider listening to some of the stuff that was awesome in games past or something and take a page from those books once in awhile. They have a few awesome tracks (Oldschool SFK Courtyard for example) but they are almost never used (you hear them for 5-10 sec at a time in <4 areas in the whole game).

Do you guys remember the orc warchief from the introductory part of Warcraft III? I'm a guy who's 100% straight but that voice made me shiver with enjoyment every time the orc spoke--and he babbled every single time you clicked on him.

Like you, I can't play video games muted. In most MMOs it's because I'm Alt-Tabbed a lot, which would kill me if I couldn't hear the respawns. In other games, I need to hear the warning sounds and whatnot. I just feel blind without the in-game sound (wat).

My solution was turning off in-game music and lowering the master volume to around 10%. It's high enough that I can register warning sounds and attacks through the music, but not high enough that it ruins the music. Experiment with decreasing the in-game volume until it reaches a level where you're comfortable with it.

Different strokes for different folks, I suppose. I'd go insane if a video game was playing that.

If you're worried that your out-of-game music isn't epic enough to fit the in-game actions, you could always put this on:

Just curious, what about those two pieces didn't you like?

Everyone is entitled to their own opinion; those are both "boss battle" themes from single-player RPGs... they're meant to get your heart pounding, they're meant to make you sit on the edge of your chair, especially in some of the harder battles in those two games.

As for what you linked and "epicness", it isn't so much that, is the music and game being out of sync from an art perspective. Music designed to fit a game will usually sound more "in place" than music designed for something else entirely.

Too Asian - no racism intended - and too 8-bit arcade-y. Without looking at the video clip, or looking up Star Ocean, I knew it was Asian. It's hard to say what exactly it is about the tracks that I don't like. It's the combination of everything, I guess. Beat's too fast, not enough bass, sounds like two tracks overlapping each other three minutes into the second track, etc. Can't really explain it. It's the same reason why I'm not into the heavy metal stuff Aeth and the others keep linking in the BDT. It just doesn't trigger anything in me on an emotional level, which makes it noise rather than music to my ears.

Unlike heavy metal, however, those two tracks were directly annoying me. I guess I'm just not a fan of the arcade style music which the Asian pop culture is rocking hard at the moment. It's probably also why I didn't get into the anime fad. I'm a weird nerd like that. I prefer bass and harmonic rhythms, not necessarily speed. I don't need a super fast beat to get my heart racing, I just need something like this cranked up to max volume:

Different strokes, like I said.

I don't disagree with you that WoW could certainly use some more intense music at certain points, but I have to say that those two you linked just don't do it for me. I think something more like this would have been a great example of music that captures that kind of feel for me.

The video contained within this spoiler is relevant to the discussion regarding old school game music.

The pieces Lyrailis posted are a bit too much for my taste. But I L-O-V-E-D the music of Final Fantasy 7 & 8 & 9 which in essence isn't that different.
That being said, Two Steps From Hell is awesome. Got to know it via a guildie who always listens to it when we raid.

Edit to add this.

WoW's in game music never really bothered me, so I always just turned it off and listened to something else, usually metal, but occasionally electronica or something like that. I've always got sound effects on though, just so I know what's going on. I think there's certain music that fits WoW, but it's not crazy JRPG stuff, I'm with Maz on this one, those songs drive me insane. I think the reason I like listening to my own music is because I see WoW as one big grind, and it feels like fast paced music speeds that up, kind of like walking. This is what I'm listening to now.

Edit: The last time I listened to Video Game music was Final Fantasy 9, it was less annoying back when I used to play it for 10 hours a day.

My **** it was. FF8 was terrible, FF9 was a throwback to the roots of Final Fantasy. The only part I despised about that game was when they decided to split your party without any prior warning. That and Hades. Wiping on him for hours only to have a friend, who never played the game before, one shot him. Stupid beginners luck.Smiley: mad

Vivi was the only not-annoying character in IX. While some of the side quests were fun, other things were really bad. For me, the litmus test is this: I actually finished FF 8, FF IX is the only FF game I never played all the way through (and X-2, but that one doesn't count).

I rather enjoyed FF9. FF8 would have been supreme (imo) if they hadn't implemented this stupid "monsters level with you" idea. Also I think it sucked that you had to link your magic spells to your stats which prevented you from using them (or your stats would go down). Other than that FF8 was an extraordinary game. Even for the high standard FF games had until the abomination of FF10-2 came out. I still play them whenever a new one emerges. But haven't finished FF13-2 yet and doubt I will anytime soon. Somehow the magic is gone.

I dunno, it was the first FF game I had played, so I think that's why I like it the most. Funny thing is, I hated it at first, and then once I had help beating the last boss on the first disk (Gizamaluke? it's been a while) I started pouring hours into it. Once I got a TV in my room when I was a kid, about 12, I basically had no social life outside of school. I occasionaly went out, but I'd prefer to not be outside getting stabbed (Woo Scotland). That's basically how I ended up with so much time played in the game. Same thing happened with WoW when I played during early Wrath. And once again, now, all I really do is play video games, work, and go see a couple friends a few times a week. Being social is hard though, so I don't think it's worth the time invested. I don't really see the need to have an extensive amount of people around you.

I suppose since this is an "idle/bored" thread, derailment isn't much of an issue (I don't mind it anyways) so I'll offer my own input into the FFs, particularly 8 and 9:

8 had awesome graphics for its time, and the storyline was pleasant enough. The Junction system and the leveling thing I absolutely hated as most do; MMO-style grind in a singleplayer game just isn't fun. You either grind grind grind to keep your power above the mobs' power, or, you keep yourself as weak as you can make yourself but yet find ways to grind to raise your GFs' levels without raising your own so that you can get ridiculously overpowered (but yet this takes hours upon hours to do).

9, however, had a more traditional system, but not as good graphics. The storyline started out shaky at first (like the silly comedy having to do with mr. Tin Man), but it got better over time, and I _loved_ the chocobo mini-games (something I missed in 8 that 7 had). The ability learning system was also cool; it was kinda-sorta like 6's (but yet didn't have everyone being a carbon copy of each other 'cept their special ability), which was a plus.

So...

Both games are awesome in their own way, but yeah. That Junction system really hurt 8 bad. If 8 had your traditional leveling style and if they would have dumped that stupid thing where you junction magic to stats and have to trade magic around between group members, then it would have been a much better game.

Also, FF10's system rocked too, though some scenes (the laughing scene, UGH) were bleh. The battle system was awesome though, I loved it. The sphere grid system was kinda "meh" but it wasn't that bad.

Aye I agree that what really put me off of FF8 was how they handled leveling. I imagine if I could have pushed past that I would have enjoyed it more. Oh well.

FF10 was stepping into new ground with voice overs in a Final Fantasy game so while scenes like the laugh one and cheesy as hell dialogue between characters were painful to listen to I can forgive them a bit easier than messing up leveling in FF8. I did find it a bit of a bummer though that once you got high enough any character can play any roll. Really took away from the uniqueness of each class.

On a slightly related note all this talk of Final Fantasy reminds me of when I first started playing the series. Back on the snes I would rent a game called Final Fantasy II and really have a tough time beating the first boss, the Mist Dragon. For some reason I couldn't comprehend the concept to not attack it when it was in mist form. Smiley: laugh

The way I see it, they're all individual games that have their own perks and bad moments. Even ones like X-2 (which started horribly), eventually takes a much deeper, darker and depressing turn and becomes good (as hard to believe as that may be). I haven't played through every FF out there, but I've yet to play one where I had to put down my controller because I disliked it so much.

On the topic of the music in WoW and other games, I always just switch it up depending on my mood. Sometimes I mute the music and play my own, other times I just leave it going. I always leave the sound effects on though, even if just turned down a bit. Games just never feel right to me with 0 sound whatsoever.

Not quite "WoW music" so much as it's.... WoW music? Worth listening to IMO:

As for my "bored thought", why the hell did the Mogu have the Serpent's Spine built? I mean I know it was to keep the mantid out, but the mantid can fly ffs.

The bulk of the mantid army is ground forces. The ones that can fly over the wall are just a small fraction of the total army. Besides wouldn't you want a wall up to at least slow them down rather than have nothing up?

Yeah that's true. Maybe I'm putting too much thought into it. It just seems like even with a wall they'd be able to simply climb over it, or just go around (which is how I got into dread wastes for the first time anyways....)

The fliers are smaller, weak mantids that are usually used as scouts and harassment drones; you see this while doing Golden Lotus dailies.

You're doing the same things that the Mogu did when the wall was theirs -- they dump oil over the sides of the wall, they use cannons, etc to assault the ground forces from (relative) safety, while some troops on the wall can fight off the weak fliers that try to fly over the walls.

Of course, ladders could be used to climb the walls, but give Lord of the Rings a good watch sometime as to why this is harder than it sounds.

Walls are an excellent way of slowing an army down while you kill ridiculous numbers of them before they break through your wall.

That, and Pandaria is modeled after several Asian/Far-Eastern cultures; China being one of them. They probably wanted to find some way to do a "Great Wall" shoutout in Pandaria and this fit perfectly.

Also, back on the subject of Music, I found this somewhat unique track in my VG music folder:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XLoKsTqm-4Y

This song is a lot less metal-y than the first two I posted, but yet it is one of those unique boss battle themes, because it has three distinct "phases", because the boss has 4 forms.

Wait, 4 forms, 3 phases of music?

Hehe.

The boss slowly grows in size as you keep doing damage to it -- it gets bigger and more powerful and it hurts a lot more, has a lot more deadly attacks as you continue fighting it, and the music reflects that. The first "phase" of the music is more of a quiet "what the hell is this thing!?" and then as it grows larger and the music adds more instruments, it is a "eh, this is getting more dangerous..." and then, the third phase it is even larger, splits up into two halves and the fight starts getting much harder. The music also gets a little louder and more hectic, adding more instruments to it.

And then the last phase?

The Song Starts Over from the first, quiet/slow phase because the boss becomes smaller, but invincible and more weird-looking, and its attacks can near one-shot you and the game drives home the point you have no hope of actually killing the thing (until someone throws you a MacGuffin that you can wound it with).

Just an interesting tidbit. I love battle themes that change as you continue fighting the boss (Dancing Mad from FF6 does the same thing).

Oh, and the ominous heart-beat chant in the background... love that stuff.

-shrug- I am sure there is a good reason why they don't just go around. Going to spoiler the rest since it involves some major lore drops you get at exalted with Klaxxi. They throw themselves at the wall so that the strongest are the only ones to come back and pass on their genes. Essentially each new swarm is stronger than the last. One could argue that, while defeating the Pandaren would be a nice goal, the main goal of the swarm is to just weed out the weak in their population.
