Thottbot - Open address to the code controllers.Follow

#1 Oct 29 2012 at 8:48 AM Rating: Default
I'm starting to think that there is (seems to be) a general level of apathy towards Thottbot as a site and maybe it is time for ZAM - as a network - to axe the code/project completely. Add to this that the site is very slow to open, my faith in the 'project' is continually waning...

Despite a previous query into the validity of the SSL certificate, I was assured this was an oversight... it would now appear that Thottbot is now deemed redundant by ZAM (in favour of WoWHead...?) and I'm curious to know why the coding continues to exist if the project is a 'dead duck'.

I understand if it uses minimal database space (or is a shared resource for WoWHead) that it is pointless to delete it in terms of production costs, but the interface & user-friendliness are not present in the workings of WoWHead, as a primary database - there are times when I know what I want to look for (and would prefer to use Thottbot) and there are times when I would prefer to use WoWHead (data collection/comparison) but as WoWHead is 'more than a database' it is currently not a site that I think of in terms of 'pure' data enquiry.

I would welcome discussion from others on this topic... but I fear that I'm alone in my feelings towards Thottbot...

I wasn't aware that Thottbot was even still a thing, to be perfectly honest.

Wagering a guess that it's kept open for the few hits it gets from people returning to the game, or finding it out of nostalgia, etc.

Personally, I never really did like Thottbot though (no offense). Preferred Allakhazam's layout for information; you know back when we had our own stuff, before we merged with Wowhead as well. Hence the reason I'm posting here I suppose.

I've been using Thottbot for more years than I care to reflect on - I'm sure it was the first site I used for finding info. on professions, drop options, etc - and I'm still eager to use it as the database it was designed to be used as.

As the database functionality seems to have been integrated with WoWHead commenting section it has a reason to exist but if ZAM no longer wish players to use the Thottbot method to access it, then it would make sense that this entry point has become buggy/slow in its' coding.

It's a shame that Thottbot's legacy has been allowed to decline in this way, because WoWHead wouldn't now be what it is if it wasn't for Thottbot...

Is Thottbot even still it's own thing? I though it was all absorbed into Wowhead.

Wait, people use something other than Wowhead for info?

Voluntarily, or is this like a North Korean method of torture?

Thottbot, was one of the first sites recommended to me when I started playing WoW in 2/2007. I remember searching it for information, and even then it seemed a bit outdated. A bit shocked it's still around.

You do realize that this is not the site feedback forum and Alla itself has been turned into a forgotten backwater of ZAM? Posting an open letter to ZAM here is pretty well useless.

Not completely. I think it's still a go to place for FF stuff. And maybe a few other games.

I started on Zam with FFXI. It was my major info site for that game for a very long time, then I gradually added others as I found them. But I've never really left the Zam forums here, and this is probably good since I'm going to give FFXIV-ARR a try in January. Smiley: oyvey Smiley: lol
Yes, I'm apparently a masochist.

I mean, I started on Zam with FFXI as well, but I only ever really used Zam for FFXI info, and for the brief time before Wowhead opened up.
