So apparently I play WoW nowFollow

I decided to try the game out again, managed to stay past the trial this time, and I has questions. I'm playing a Human Warrior, and I just dinged 30 just doing the quests and stuff.

1. How do I customize my hotkeys for abilities/talents/whatever? I now have more abilities than hotkeys, but don't know how to change them around. It's getting kind of frustrating.

2. Is there any sort of zone like EQ's Bazaar where players sell and trade stuff?

3. At what point will this thing where I've been soloing the game stop being viable? As in, when will I just not be able to do it anymore, not, "when should I start joining a guild and doing raids and ****".

4. What's the tradeskill(or whatever it might be called in WoW) system like? I never bothered with EQ because it was just a pain in the *** and I could just buy anything I really needed.

5. It defaulted me to a random server and won't allow me the option of playing on a different one, is there just one for each area? If not, how would I go about playing on another server shoud I want to at some point?

1. There should be a keybind menu as one of the options from the menu when you hit 'Esc,' which will allow you to switch stuff around. There should also be options somewhere for showing more toolbars at once if you'd like. Though honestly it's been a while, as I've used various addons to manage the bars for a while now, and don't really remember the default stuff Smiley: frown

2. There should be an action house in every major city (so like Stormwind). Talk to a guard there and they should be able to point you the way.

3. Soloing will always be viable.

4. Gathering professions can earn decent money. Most crafting professions are little more than gold sinks unless you get your hands on a rare recipe or something. Always money to be made off of recipes with a cooldown at the higher levels. Unless you put extra time and effort into them the crafting profs will probably lag behind your level by a bit while leveling. So you'll likely be level 19 and making level 14 gear...

ETA: Crafting professions will provide better end-game stat bonuses, if you get into that.

5. Your character is locked to the server it started on, you should be able to start additional characters on other servers though. Or you can pay to transfer your character to another server.

Welcome. Smiley: grin

In response to above:
Esc > Interface >Action Bars and then you should be able to show 4 more. 2 above the 1 through +buttons, and 2 on the right side of the screen.
You then will have to go to Esc (the menu) and Key Binds to change these if you wish to key bind them to other keystrokes.

OR

Dip your toes into add-ons and get the Bar-mod: Dominois (either from curse.com, or wowinterface.com). It will let you set up 10 bars if you want to see that many buttons. Also makes it easier to set key binds.

This sounds weird. There should be a button on the character selection screen that says "Change Realm." Clicking it should allow you to choose from a list of servers.

Like Protein said, though, you can't take your characters with you to a new server, unless you pay for a server transfer.

1). You can drag ability hotkeys to wherever you want them to be. If you need more hotkeys, hit Escape, click the Interface button, and then on the left side, click "Action Bars". You can enable the Left, Right, and Right 2 action bars for another 30 slots total.

2). Hit "P" to open your spellbook, if you have abilities in your spellbook that aren't on your hotkey bars yet.

3). If you want, you can assign keys to these hotkey bars (I do Shift+1 through Shift+= and Ctrl+1 through Ctrl+= for the bottom left and bottom right bars).

All major cities except the new Pandaren one have an Auction House. Talk to any guard and ask him where it is. All Alliance Auction Houses are linked together; all Horde Auction Houses are linked together, and all Neutral Auction Houses are linked together so it doesn't matter where you list or buy your items from, except for the Neutral AHs; those are in the neutral goblin towns (Booty Bay, Everlook, etc).

Solo is easily possible all the way up to max level. There are a FEW group quests (in your quest log, it says (Group) after it) and dungeon quests (those say (Dungeon)..), but those are not required. They reward nice gear and experience if you do happen to find someone to help you, though.

It isn't very hard at all; it is highly recommended that you take two gathering professions for your character (Mining, Skinning, Herbalism). You can choose two of all of the major professions (anything that isn't Cooking, Fishing, First Aid or Archaeology, which all characters are permitted to learn) to make lots of gold.

Production crafts (Blacksmithing, Leatherworking, etc) aren't that hard at all if you have the correct gathering profession for it on either that character or another character.

Click the "Change Realm" button at the top of the character selection window. You can create up to 50 characters, up to 11 characters on each realm.

I figured that, I just thought it was kind of odd that it didn't let me pick one in the first place, and just threw me into a random one. How would I go about seeing the name of the server I'm on? That doesn't seem to be listed anywhere especially obvious right now.

Totally just did that Mine dungeon in Westfall solo...slowly over time, made some good cash, wish the xp for it was better though.

I'm having an issue now where people just keep randomly inviting me to guilds...constantly, like, a request every 5 minutes, and it's getting kind of annoying(trying to kill something that's tough to kill, in comes a pop up to block the center of my screen). In other MMOs I've played, people usually tend to ask first, or happen to bring it up after randomly grouping for something, is this going to be a constant thing where people just assume I'll join their guild without having played with them at all?

I think that there are mods now that auto invite people like that.

Sadly this spam is not going to stop unless you're in a guild. But I think there's an option somewhere to autoblock guild invites even without addons.

You can block guild invites by going to the interface menu (Esc -> Interface) and checking the "Block Guild Invites" option under Controls. People can still spam you with whispers, but you won't get the annoying accept/decline box.

As for the name of your current realm, it should be visible just above the "Change Realm" button at your character selection screen.

Though really, you might as well join a guild. At the very least you don't need to do anything, and a level 25 guild will give you a bunch of benefits just for being part of it (like a purchasable helmet that scales with your level, a reduction on your hearthstone cooldown, and 10% more experience for everything you do).

Yeah, if you get an offer to join a high level guild, definitely take it. You don't have to talk to people in it (you can disable the chat channel if you want) and you get all kinds of passive benefits, like increased mount speed, increased crafting/gathering results, increased experience gains from kills and quests, etc.

Best of all, being in a guild flags you as "taken" with all the other spammers, so you won't get whispers non-stop. I know your pain. My level 22 Warlock was getting a whispers about joining guilds every five minutes as well. Same whisper from most of them, so I guess there's a guild recruit addon out there or something that people are using to automate the process.

That is kind of odd. I want to say before I started it showed me a list of servers, and I chose one that had 'new players' listed on it, that was like 5-6 years ago though.

Anyway, unless they changed it recently there should be a red 'change realm' button underneath the server name, and above your character list. Should take you back to a list of servers, and you can select another from there.

Yeah what Mazra said... Smiley: lol

If you soloed Deadmines at 30 then pretty much everything would have been grey to you so no experience at all apart from any quests you completed.

One tip with that sort of thing. You will get a lot of low level green items that are not much use. If you have an alt at level 10 (about an hour) they can disenchant these things. The materials gathered from disenchanting sell on the Auction House for a lot more than the items. Depending on the server, blue items and greens that are "..of the Bear" or ".. of the Monkey" may be worth selling individually on the AH.

Assuming you are either Arms or Furry spec you will be able to do more appropriate level dungeons by using the dungeon finder (Press I) as a dps class. Such automated groups are often semi-moronic and occasionally emoplode but mostly you get a lot of experience and a bit of loot. Unlike EQ you will not find them great social times - it is not uncommon to go through the whole thing with virtually nothing said. Partly this is because WoW is faster-paced and more interactive than EQ. Give it a try - you can always leave if you don't like it.

And welcome to the madhouse Smiley: smile

Well, I started the deadmines one as soon as I happened to get a quest for it, and just kept going back, not for the loot or anything, but just because I don't like leaving something undone. I'll probably use the dungeon finder at some point, didn't realize going in that it was dungeon til I'd already done it and I'd suddenly gotten an achievement for 5 dungeon quests completed. I do like though, that I can access instances/dungeons, while soloing, or just use a feature to grab a random group, rather than having to sit around, waiting for someone who wants to do the content to want to come play(unlike in EQ).

I figured out the action bar thing, much easier now.

It's not that I'm against being in a guild or anything, but, I have this view of guilds in MMOS(especially WoW, FFXI, and (very especially)EVE), where it's like you're almost expected to schedule your life around the game to participate in raids, or to work on specific skills and stuff in order to be the kind of useful your guildmates want you to be. That's not something I'm willing to do. I'm probably wrong and overgeneralizing, but that's how it kind of looks to an outsider. To me, it's just a game I enjoy playing, not anything worth fussing over as much as I would a job(hence why I quit EVE).

My new question is about whether or not there's any kind of general, worldwide chat as I wouldn't mind socializing just a little bit, and my chat windows seem limited to the area I'm in. Also not sure how I'd go about joining other channels if that's a thing.

Edit: also, is there a way to set a surname or anything for myself? or is that something that's achievement/level/quest based?

just use the looking for guild feature and type in what your looking for with any guilds that may interest you.
The guild invite block is just to avoid the spamming of invites until your ready.

No there isn't a world chat like EQ..just a general chat which is zone wide for what ever zone your in..and there's a trade chat the can be used in the major cities and all major cities of your faction plus the neutral ones can read it. that's as world wide chat as WoW gets.

Finding a good guild is the best way to socialize without being subject to possible city garbage chat.( which you find out sooner or later.)

And there are usually guilds to suit any play style.

Good Luck. Hope you enjoy WoW.

Besides the incentives (quests give full XP, drops are level-appropriate, the possibility of a goodie bag at the end), I strongly believe that instances should first be encountered at the character level they were designed for, in a properly-sized group. The encounters were designed that way, and (as much as possible) it reinforces proper group mechanics, proper group behavior, and playing your class/spec in an appropriately challenging environment.

Plus, if you get lucky and get in a group that actually communicates, you might meet someone you want to group with later, either from your own server or via battle tag... Back in the day this was the best way to get into a guild that was right for you, and it might still be a workable way to do it.

One idea - is there a mentoring guild for your server? They're pretty much explicitly non-hardcore and designed for ppl new to the game. As others have said, there's LFG and trade chat - guilds that advertise as emphasizing leveling might be a place to find a community without the hardcore pressure.

Monsieur Driftwood wrote:

There are titles that come with certain achievements, e.g. "Salty" for tackling a number of fishing challenges, "the Explorer" for visiting every area in the world, etc. The only one I can think of offhand that's a surname is "Jenkins" for repeating the feat of the famous Leeroy in his honor.

I joined the Alliance Mentor guild on my server, is a really great bunch of folks who have good chat and can also answer any questions I may have. No obligations or requirements to join, and if you like the folks in the guild you might find yourself a permanent place.

Most guilds don't require you to schedule anything. They might have events or set up run times, but I have yet to see one that will complain if you don't join in.

Raiding, yes, requires a certain amount of scheduling usually if you want to run with a set group. It usually takes a few hours and somebody has to organize 10-25 people to be there so some sort of schedule just kind of has to happen. Of course (raid-finder apart) you could always just ask around town in /trade for a group when you happen to have time when you get to that point.

There's also nothing wrong with hopping around from guild to guild for a bit until you find a group who suits you, so long as you don't create a lot of drama around it. Guild perks are really nice to have. A lot of guilds just don't even care really - I have alts on servers I forget about; I hopped on my goblin hunter for the first time in a few months and he's still in whatever Level 25 guild I joined him to. I don't even know the name, nor have I ever talked to anybody in it really. But if I wanted to run something I'm sure I could find some people there to go.

Up to you of course, but I wouldn't just rule guilds out without giving it a try.

Knowing a bit more about them, if I can find a non-raiding, casual kind of guild, I might join that.

Edit: also, is there a way to set a surname or anything for myself? or is that something that's achievement/level/quest based?

You are in for a lifetime of wasted time. Now more than ever before in this game.

Surnames as you correctly surmised, are available through achievements mostly, and some quests.
