World of Warcraft hobby sparks US political row

The gaming hobby of a political candidate has become an issue in a state senate race in New England, US.

Maine Republicans have created a webpage revealing that Democrat candidate Colleen Lachowicz plays an orc rogue in World of Warcraft (WoW).

Ms Lachowicz's liking for back-stabbing and poison in WoW raise questions about her "fitness for office", they claim.

Ms Lachowicz has hit back saying the attack showed the Republicans were "out of touch".

Weird focus

The state senate seat known as District 25 in Maine, is currently being contested by Ms Lachowicz and incumbent Republican Tom Martin. Voting takes place on 6 November.

As part of its campaign efforts, the Republican party in the state created "Colleen's World" - a website that compiles information about Ms Lachowicz's orc rogue Santiaga. An orc is a mythical human-like creature, generally described as fierce and combative.

In a statement that accompanies the webpage, Maine Republicans said playing the game led Ms Lachowicz to live a "bizarre double life" that raised questions about her ability to represent the state.

The page also detailed some of the comments Ms Lachowicz has made while talking about her orc rogue, in particular it highlights her affection for Santiaga's ability to stab things and kill people without suffering a jail sentence.

"These are some very bizarre and offensive comments," said Maine Republican Party spokesman David Sorensen in a statement. "They certainly raise questions about Lachowicz's maturity and her ability to make serious decisions for the people of Senate District 25."

The site also lists many of the 400 comments she has posted to left wing political news and discussion site Daily Kos. Maine Republicans have also posted leaflets that reproduce the information on the website.

"I think it's weird that I'm being targeted for playing online games," said Ms Lachowicz in a statement. "Apparently I'm in good company since there are 183 million other Americans who also enjoy online games.

"Instead of talking about what they're doing for Maine people, they're making fun of me for playing video games," said Ms Lachowicz.

It is not clear what effect the Republican tactic will have on the state senate race in Maine. However, many messages of support have been left on Ms Lachowicz's own webpage with some pledging cash to her campaign.

Gaming researcher Ladan Cockshut said the row revealed how gaming can be seen as a bad thing to do.

"In my work, I've spoken with many people who in their regular lives have roles of significant responsibility (as doctors, managers, or educators) but who choose carefully with whom they disclose their gaming activity," she told the BBC. "And disclosing their gaming activity is often accompanied by a degree of apology or embarrassment."

But, she added, having a gamer run for office was a "heartening" development.

"This would seem to run contrary to the other stereotypes that we love to assign to gamers: that they are lazy, antisocial people who don't have a 'real life'," she said. "Maybe this will trigger some dialogue about our perceptions of gamers and the role that games can and should play in modern society."

To be honest, all I got out of this article is that someone has to go through life with the name
'Ladan Cockshut'.

I'd be tempted to vote for her just because she's honest about it and just because the republicans are getting so stupidly petty.

As long as she shows up and does her job and fulfills her RL obligations, who the **** cares what she does with her free time, as long as she's not breaking the law?

I don't like her comments about "being able to kill people without jail time". There is no jail in WoW and her making that comparison tells me that she may not be able to completely separate reality from the fantasy world. Then again, I could just be over-thinking it.

To be perfectly frank, I had a boss once who looked and was shaped exactly like a female orc with the ponytail. I used to derive great happiness when killing that particular toon in any circumstance. It got me thru my days of stupidity and **** at work.

So, what, you're telling me that you've never, ever, ever loaded up a game for stress relief? You've never played an FPS game and toted around a gun just to shoot people and thought "Wow this is fun!"? You've never done that for stress relief?

That's why a lot of us play video games -- we can do all the things we can't do IRL without consequence. You can't take a rocket launcher and blow a jeep full of people up or some-crap IRL, can you? No, you can't. But you CAN in a game and you can point and laugh at the fiery wreckage and you can have fun doing it.

You can grab a machinegun and mow down people in-game; they're just pixels.

I imagine a politician's job is probably stressful (especially with the kind of Republican bullsh*t she has to put up with, as evidenced by this website attack against her); stress relief is probably a necessary part of her life, otherwise most humans would go insane.

There's nothing wrong with her statements; she's saying/doing the same thing that a major portion of the American population is saying/doing.

EDIT: I am in no way, shape, form or manner saying I support the Republicans or the Democrats; I'm completely neutral in that regard, before someone gets the bright idea that this is an anti-republican (or pro-democrat) post.

I think putting her WOW comments is quite a retarded move by any candidate. With that being said, her comments outside World of Warcraft should of been what was outlined. The fact that she wants to hunt down and drown a person is quite psychotic. That comment alone shows that she is violent and unstable.

Then she goes and uses terms like "Tebaggers" talking about how their mindset on Medicare is. Really isn't of the top 3 debts in America Medicare/Medicaid? Along she uses TEBAGGERS as down talking about citizens with a view that doesn't agree with hers. FACT more black "tebag" candidates were elected then democrat ones this past election. IF you look up progressive rally in FEB 2011 you will find many liberals talking about hanging a black judge, returning him to the fields, and pulling out people's toe nails one by one... I'd post the link watch?v=uhHmhEqX7G4...

I don't agree with her opponent's choice to attack her playing world of warcraft, but I do agree that she is obviously a mentally unstable person. Not because she plays World of Warcraft but she is detached too far from reality. People like her with views like this need mental counseling. Believing VIOLENCE and KILLING other people that don't share their views without listening is known as being fascist.

Now I don't agree with the Republican Party either. But the topic isn't about him its about this woman and how the article was turned into "Its because she plays world of warcraft" When the focus shouldn't be about that.

I'd look into further education before lambasting anyone on the internet, because your grasp of the English language is pretty atrocious.

She's a pretty healthy person, in my opinion. Healthy people seek outlets for their frustrations, and WoW is obviously one for her. Sports, working out, and running are mine. Are you going to call me mentally unstable because I run and work out rather than punching one or two of my coworkers (or bosses) that infuriate me?

Difference between punching someone and killing them. Yes we all have our frustrations but as a person seeking a political position talking about killing someone by shooting, drowning, ect is a sure sign of not being able to handle conflict without resorting instantly to murder.

and no, you running is healthy. You demanding that you want to hunt someone down and drown them is psychotic. Some people deserve to be punched but hunted down and murdered is overboard.

I didn't say her playing WOW was wrong. Obviously with your grasp of the English language you failed to read that. And education?! Where am I wrong? Prove one of my points wrong. Name our top 5 debts in America and show me where saying you want to "hunt someone down and drown them" is healthy!

It's not psychotic, it is simply a very poor attempt at humour. As explained in a recent article on Cracked, many people resort to ultraviolent language in a misguided attempt to amuse people. As you are most likely completely unaware, a generally accepted theory of humour is that it can be derived from subverted expectations, and people use the violent imagery in an otherwise peaceful environment in order to surprise and shock. It is simple and childish, but above all, completely harmless.

I myself regularly tell people to "go die in a fire" but I very rarely, if ever, actually set people on fire.

Obviously you didn't read all her quotes she made. Please read all her statements, and no not the poster. http://www.colleensworld.com/

Now she has some points in some of the things she says. I agree with some of her political points, but her labeling people in lfg as "Teabaggers" who do not preform up to par and ***** up is a reflection of her own hatred.

Anyone remember when a certain democratic senator got shot in the head and people pointed fingers at GOP violent speak? How quickly when it is a democrat making similar comments about personally killing someone how its twisted into something OK to say.

If you told me "Go die in a fire" doesn't mean your going to set me on fire. If I said " I'm going to hunt you down and stab you!" Means I am personally going to hunt you down and stab you. When threatening personal bodily harm you are threatening someone's life.

Now I don't take anything she says seriously, but the point of the whole thing is that someone in her position should NOT be making statements like that. She has made many statements talking down to people that she doesn't know just because her opinion of them is of pure ignorance.

Now when Gifford got shot in the head everyone was demanding the GOP get held responsible for the whole "cross hairs over Arizona" bs. When not even 1 week prior a certain democrat was suggesting that the people of FL should mob Rick Scott and shoot him in the head.....

The whole issue is that after Gifford it is considered improper and UN-professional to make a statement threatening a rival with their life. Also with her other off the wall statements you have to question her mental state. Referencing people as "Tbaggers" isn't professional and is outright hateful. So yes I question her mental state. NOT BECAUSE SHE PLAYS WOW, but of the improper statements she has made.

Yay for pigeon chess!

The difference between these situations is that Sarah Palin used firearm imagery and actively encouraged the targetting of opponents with the slogan "Don't retreat, instead reload." Jesse Kelly opted for "Help remove Gabrielle Giffords from office. Shoot a fully automatic M16 with Jesse Kelly." Lachowicz stupidly joked about killing a man herself, Palin asked her supporters to target her opponents and did it without any hint of humour or irony.
And this is in a nation rife with gun crime, where shootings are relatively commonplace. Last I heard the only bathtub drownings most Americans had to deal with also involved aging popstars and copious amounts of cocaine.

The truth behind the Gifford case is that Jared was threatening her for over 4 years prior to shooting her. It was her office that wrote him saying that she was going to be in town and maybe hearing her speak would change his mind.

Of course I play WoW for stress relief. But I don't do it because I can kill people without going to jail. I don't consider real world consequences when playing WoW (other than things I might miss out on because I am playing) and I certainly don't think of WoW consequences while doing things in the real world. I thought her explanation of "doing it because she can kill people without going to jail" was a **** dumb thing to say. That's all.

She worded it poorly, but what she meant was that sometimes you just want to blow **** up, and video games provide that opportunity without real life consequences.
