I once (read: back in The Good Ol' Days™) tanked Zul'Farrak on my Shaman, equipped with a shield and Rockbiter Weapon. Granted, I am pretty amazing at what I do, but you know... where there's a whip, there's a way.

Generally speaking, though, selebrin is right. I'm not sure why Shaman have retained the ability to tank through Rockbiter Weapon, but it's silly now that non-tanks get one-shot by most stuff. It's likely a remnant from back when Shaman, Druids and Paladins were actual hybrids and as such could be called upon to help the group by off-tanking during tough pulls and whatnot.

As an Enhancement Shaman, you can tank pretty much everything up to Northrend, because nothing really hits very hard in Vanilla and Crusade dungeons. For some obscure reason, however, Blizzard decided to give Shaman the Rockbiter Weapon spell at level 75, meaning the Rockbiter Weapon is USELESS from the very @#%^ing moment you get it.

Brilliant!

I was always under the impression that Shamans could "off-tank" if the main tank went down. As far as them being main tank, I guess with the right gear and rotation, anything is possible. I would still prefer a Pally tank any day.

I "tanked" heroic Oculus on my enhancement shaman back in Wrath. We had a prot warrior in the group, but he was wearing holy paladin gear, only using auto attack and spent 5 minutes facing away from the next group after every pack of mobs. Our healer was really, really good and the rest of the dps were intelligent and pushing out huge numbers, so I ended up pulling each pack and we just let the warrior run along behind us. This was toward the end of the expansion too when everyone outgeared the heroics.

But no, shaman are not actual tanks and I'd imagine most healers would strangle you if you tried.

Shamans (huh, thought plural of Shaman was Shaman, but apparently Shamans works) cannot get crit immunity and they would have less armor than the other tanks (due to wearing mail instead of plate). They also lack several vital cooldowns, like an AOE taunt and oh shi- damage mitigation, which means that tanking trash would be nigh impossible.

You could still tank some stuff, I guess, but both you and the healer would have to be very well-geared, considering what happens when you get hit with a crit these days. My Druid can still drop from full health to nearly dead (through cooldowns) in some of the "old" Cataclysm heroics. I imagine even a well-geared Shaman would not survive stuff like that.

It's a bit weird, though, that they would turn two of the hybrids into full-time tanks and leave out the Shaman. All they'd need is some armor rating modifier baked into the Rockbiter Weapon buff, a crit chance reduction talent and an AOE taunt baked into some other cooldown. Maybe Stoneclaw Totem could work as a player taunt (taunting to the caster instead of the totem object itself) when Rockbiter Weapon is active or something.

Seven years and it's still one of those things they never got around to fixing. Like Travel Form. Took them eight years to change the placeholder skin of that ability. Too busy working on new content patches, I imagine. Smiley: sly

Maz, I don't even own a Shaman. I'm a Belfadin tank all the way.

Rouges are overpowdered.

On another note, I hate Tyrande so much. I don't mind tanking it, but healing it... ugh. If people aren't standing in the right spots, sh*t hits the fan very fast.

I agree. Even worse when people don't interrupt. I mean, I'm a leet healer and all but it would help out greatly if less damage was being taken... I'm pretty lazy lol

Please try to remember that they nearly tripled the interrupt cooldown, which I can't help but to think is lame.

First, they get rid of our cleanses.
Now, interrupts.

Basically, I wonder if Blizzard is saying "we don't want you to bother yourself with interrupts or cleanses, just soak the damage and you'll be fine" or something.

I remember when I actually cared about Cleanse in Wrath, I used it as often as I could, anytime I had something on me I could Cleanse.

Then came Cataclysm, and they made Cleanses take ridiculous mana, and I stopped using it. I outright removed it from my toolbar, because I never used it and sometimes I'd accidentally bump the key. Instead of saying "you have nothing to remove" like it once did, it casted the spell even though I had nothing on me and ended up doing nothing but wasting mana, so I got rid of it.

During Wrath and Cataclysm, I used interrupts whenever possible. I took pride in being a "good" player who knew to interrupt anything interruptable when it was good to do so, and now in 5.0.4, interrupts now have a 15 second (or longer!) cooldown and it generally isn't worth casting, especially when most PvE solo mobs' spells don't hurt anyways.

I miss Interrupts and Cleanses...

My Shaman, Druid and Paladin still had their cleanses. My Shaman (only healing spec'd character) also had interrupts. What changed?

Interrupts have a much longer cooldown now, and Cleanses (at least in Cata, doubt they'd change it Now) ate up a LOT of mana, so you couldn't use them as often.

Looks to me like they reduced the mana cost on pretty much everything healer related in the MoP patch. I was wondering how I was going to heal anything without my 100% uptime totems, but then I noticed that I could spam the biggest, fastest heal for the duration of a boss fight and not run out of mana. Looks like they reverted things back to WotLK when it comes to mana efficiency (so much for triage healing).

I just hit 82 on my Shamy and my guild was sort of kicking around the whole Rockbiter issue.

I know it's a left over from Vanilla, but it's kind of amazing that it's survived to MoP. They've changed so much. Some things made sense (no more gear with Agil + Sprt) and some things seemed like excessive simplification (Mana Limits and removing Head enchants) --- This spell makes no sense.

There are several classes with Far better "emergency OT" options.

DKs can pop Blood.
Palys can pop RF
Warriors can go Def.
Druids can jump into Bear form...

Heck - even Hunters + Locks have some ability to OT via pets...

I have idea why it's still around....

Demonology Warlocks are about as good tanks as Shamans. With Dark Apotheosis and Nether Plating, they do get some okay armor mitigation (50% in my gear), plus they can taunt and heal and stuff. They're still not crit immune, though, which can lead to a fiery death real fast.

That said, I had fun tanking Stonecore when the tank got knocked into the adds on the Ozruk dude. Jumped in with my Immolation Aura, Hand of Gul'dan and Void Ray (still can't believe they'd use that name for it) and tanked the crap out of that stuff!

Wouldn't recommend it in raiding, though.

Dear new player,

Shamans are good but Priest can kick butt at Tanking also, you may want to check on Rogue also.
