Well on the random list of ironies in my life. Today marks 3 years since my guild cleared Naxx.

Long after everyone else was moving on to Ulduar, of course, but we got a late start, and it was our first big raid ever for the little rag-tag band of very casual players. The culmination of months of work for us. In the end we finally found time to pull everything together. People got vacation at the right time, and we were able to put in 4 nights of raiding that week (as opposed to 1-2) to finally clear all 4 wings and have a shot at finishing the darn thing. 7 of us were brand new to raiding, 2 were alts from a different guild working in Ulduar, and 1 was elated to have finally beaten the thing after spending way too much time there at level 60 (boy, you should have heard his excitement when we downed 4 horsemen the 1st time... Smiley: lol). Boy did we ever blast through the last 2 guys though, we were so over-geared for the encounters by that point, it wasn't even funny. Smiley: rolleyes

Anyway I would have never noticed this date if I hadn't of been surfing through some old screenshots waiting for SWTOR to download (isn't it ironic, don't ya think?). Going to give a free trial a try, and may subscribe when the cost drops down to $15 later this fall after my AP is over. It'll be a good laugh looking back and laugh if this is where the story ends, and I ended up hopping games 3 years to the day after what was probably the peak of my WoW experience. Life has a funny way of sneaking up on you. Smiley: wink

Anyway, just a random nostalgic story for a Friday. How you all doing?

First, if anyone wants to play The Old Republic, send me your email via pm and I will send you an invite (it gets me a free mount!!!!).

I didn't raid in Vanilla WoW, too busy with University. I came into TBC and hit 70 when most guilds were working on Magtheridon, I ended up in some guilds 3rd Kara group which was comprised mostly of south american's. I still have the pic on my computer of me and my brothers toon standing in front of Illidan, as we had raided together (while living in different provinces) from Kara, to clearing SSC & TK to get the attunements (yes they still had those), to beat the "Big Bad" while it was currrent and push content.

So much time.

If WoW hadn't dropped into my life when it did, I probably would have had a wife, kids, house, mortgages and a dog that I needed to walk every morning. Thank you, WoW. From the bottom of my heart: thank you!

So, you're giving ToR a try, eh? Decided on a faction and class yet?

I figure between the MoP beta and some free-to-play action on SWTOR I can decide if MoP is worth the additional $25 or so. If nothing else I can come back to MoP later once it goes on sale or something.

No firm decisions yet. But was leaning towards a Jedi Consular. Smiley: grin

The leveling is a fairly solid experience, there is a continuing story the whole way through. With light/dark choices along the way and companions who approve or dislike your choices. Very Bioware single player, so if you played KOTOR, Dragon Age or Mass Effect you know the basics of what to expect.

The Flashpoints (dungeons) further the overall game story and are fun, they are probably what hooked me when I was leveling up.

End game the PvP is solid & is well liked. PvE is fairly friendly for gearing up and getting ready to raid. If you have played WoW you will jump in fairly easily.

Companions, voiced cutscenes, storylines, moral choices and all that jazz aside, the single most brilliant implementation in The Old Republic is the bonus objective feature.

Random dude/chick/alien sends you off to kill random dudes/chicks/aliens, but when you arrive there and slay your first victim, a bonus objective pops up and informs you that you just have to kill 50 more and you'll be awesome. It's brilliant. Part of me hates it, but the part of me suffering from OCD absolutely loves it.

The bonus objectives often have multiple stages with a fairly decent reward in the end, so they're almost always worth doing. Makes those "kill x of y" missions a little more interesting. Especially when the bonus objective leads to a boss fight and shiny loots. Smiley: inlove

Dynamic events in GW2 look nifty.

I know that the zone events in Rift were a nice way to break from traditional leveling and also feel like you were playing a MMO.

Bonus stuff in SWTOR can help, and in dungeons it can open optional bosses which is nifty. However I do wish there were more world events that got me off the space stations and onto planets.

2/3 ain't bad; enjoyed both KOTOR and Dragon Age, so there's hope. Smiley: grin

Really if its even a little like KOTOR it'll probably get me hooked for a while, that game was probably the biggest reason I held onto my Xbox as long as I did...

I believe I heard SWTOR is going sorta FTP this fall?

http://www.tgdaily.com/games-and-entertainment-brief/65099-star-wars-the-old-republic-is-going-free-to-play

Quote:
As per the guidelines of EA's new strategy, the company will allow players to explore the first 50 levels of the game at no cost with a limited feature set. However, players will still be required to spend $15 monthly for full access and to gain a monthly allowance of in game cash to purchase items. EA is also cutting the price of the software, which was originally priced at a premium $50.

Of course, if you're "lucky" you get 3-5-minute load times with Bioware clueless as to the cause. To be fair, those of us affected are clueless as well because we can't figure out what the hell our systems have in common. It hits people at all ends of the software spectrum, seemingly at random,

If your loading screen freezes up at 30%, welcome to the club.

It's like KOTOR, except better graphics, multiple classes and the multiplayer thing.

I like it, though I wish it was more of a sandbox game than the linear storyline driven game that it is. It doesn't feel like an open universe as much as EVE Online does or Star Wars: Galaxies did, but it's still very enjoyable for what it is.

As someone who just left SWTOR and came back to WoW, I hope you enjoy having a look at SWTOR. I really like it as a single-player game, and I'll be heading back to play more once it goes F2P in the fall. My biggest issue was that the flashpoints felt forced; that is, they were not driven by any particular world event or lore, but more along the lines of "Darth Malgus doesn't like this band of Mandalorians, so go kill them." I really missed something to tie everything together and just never felt it. I also never really liked the crafting system, but I'm an engineer and love putting stuff together myself, so YMMV. But the single-player storylines were interesting, and the voice acting was excellent.

Have fun and see you in September. They always come back :)

I'm hoping for as much, kind of for those reasons. Most of my WoW time has been spent doing single-player stuff since my guild fell apart at the beginning of Cata. Mostly soloing and playing the AH, with the occasional battleground and instance mixed in. Everything I had heard about SWTOR hinted at good single-player content, since that's what I'm mostly looking for in an MMO these days (some irony there, no?) it seemed like a good choice. Well that and $15 for the game with a month free, versus $40 for MoP. I'm getting more new (new to me at least) content for less cost.

Smiley: lol

I'll have to watch for that. Those forced storylines are usually good for a Smiley: facepalm and a Smiley: laugh before they get to the Smiley: banghead stage. Smiley: rolleyes

The crafting thing sounds intriguing mainly because I could push a button and have my guy collect materials. Then come back in like 3 minutes with a stack of stuff, before pushing the button and walking away again. Perfect for when you're chasing 2 little ones around and trying to relax. I dunno, we'll see.

Oh I'm still here though early Oct. at least, but then prob gone for at least a few months after that. For everything I've grown weary of in WoW, I know it'll suck me back eventually. Besides, they gotta have a half-price MoP sale at some point... Smiley: wink
