WoW and the Real WorldFollow

#1 May 30 2012 at 9:09 AM Rating: Decent
Hello All,
I have been playing World of Warcraft very often for a while now and I hate to say it but the time I spend playing is really starting to effect my life. I am a little worried that I may need to step back and take a break from WoW for a while. Have any of you had trouble balancing your time like this and have any advice?

I just wanted to see what you guys have to say on the subject and if you think it effects your life in any way, either with family life or in the office.

Thanks for any feedback/advice!
- Mike

I had some trouble balancing it in the beginning, but then I finally got my act together, kicked the girlfriend out and started a tab at the local bar.

Been working just fine ever since.

Alas! We have had enough students try to avoid the forum policy on academic surveys that I can't bring myself to set aside the thought: "blast, another survey chimp that thinks he is being clever". On the off chance that you are asking a serious question, why don't you hang around and chat for a while. If you just happen to be planning on using this question to kick off your research -- and I've grown increasingly twitchy about people who just want feedback -- why don't you take a minute to read the policy and take the appropriate steps.

Neural connection via BCI and intravenous alcohol drip, overachiever.

Pin this up at the office to remind you of your priorities:

Dear Mike, sometimes you need to take a break from Warcraft AH to play around with other games, like Wallstreet/New-York casino. I will be selling short Facebook stock in the next couples of days racking up major $$$ on the back of noobs.

This is my advice: Watch for sucker's rally and go short sale them. After collecting your earnings, upgrade your home and computer, buy your wife a new car and go back to Wow.

Haha, I like RAWDEAL's idea! Although I would have to start really learning some economics, is there a "Short Sales for Dummies" book out there?

Sometimes you just need to learn how to prioritize. A few months back I was raiding three nights a week, with three different teams on three different characters. I was hesitant to quit one of the teams, because I enjoyed raiding on each character. But I had significantly less time to go play with my RL friends. Now, I barely play WoW at all, I'm involved in community theater and I go out to karaoke once or twice a week with friends. I'm a lot happier. If you have good friends, they'll understand if you occasionally skip out of hanging out with them to play a video game, but honestly, why the **** would you want to play a video game over hanging out with your friends in person?

You haven't lived "Playing too much" until you've spent 4 years getting ~3-4 hours of sleep a night, gain over 80lbs and spend money 3-4 times a week ordering pizza just so they'll deliver you the two 2-liter bottles of Dr Pepper you need a day just to keep from falling asleep on the drive to work...all so you can raid six nights a week.

Yeah, I never went that crazy, but that was because I was a student so I couldn't afford to. Plus, I really like my sleep.

Yeah, but the difference is that if you tell a random stranger about how your kid's doing all that to you, they sympathize. With the gaming, they look at you like you're insane. Because you are.

I'm not addicted. I can quit whenever I want to!

I just don't want to.

Edit: Quite != quit. Shame on me for posting so early.

An astonishing coincidence! A person quits WOW five years ago and then just happens to stumble across a post in a forum that they don't post in (and which is about a game they quit five years ago) that leads into an opening to link to an e-book!

/facepalm

Probably worth having the IPs checked to see if we have a dirty, dirty sock here.

I'm not quite sure what all the fuss is about guys. Meant no harm really.
I figured forums are a place where people can share about their own experiences and interact with others, being true to the topic of the OP about 'WoW and real life' I can't see what's so terrible about posting my own story about this.
The reason why I linked to an online viewable pdf is because the story is too long for just a forum post.

Sorry if I offended anyone, because it was surely not my intention!

As a general rule, we here tend to dislike it when people pop in and flyby post what is generally an advertisement for their works*. More specifically, some of us see patterns - such as you popping in to mention your PDF around the same time someone just happens to have created a thread about the topic - as indications that instead of a coincidence, someone is making two accounts in an attempt to better advertise their work. Much like those guys who sold health tonics in old timey fairs usually had plants in the audience to better showcase their wares with often fraudulent claims. Any time someone "coincidentally" does something, we find ourselves jaded to the possibility that it's an actual coincidence.

And it's often not.

*Edited to add: We do tend to favor some more than others. A short hilarious video, a fan fiction or perhaps a useful tool you've made are much more likely to get favorable results than "my tale of how I was addicted to a game five years ago and quit".

The eBook seems to be free to read, so meh. As long as they're not advertising crap that costs money, I'll give them 9.5 for the trouble they went through setting this up. Assuming, of course, it is advertising and not someone who just wanted to share.

Sharing is caring, people.

I have a profound mistrust of missionaries and recovery programs with missionary overtones. I've sent too many students to study in the US, only to see them recruited into one of the less mainstream churches and then used as a tool to recruit their fellow students. In time, words like "tithe" start to appear, together with appeals to send missionaries to horrible, third world places like wealthy suburbs of Shanghai. I support the freedom of religious choice, but find some tactics to be unconscionable. To use an extreme example, I disagree with the confrontational strategy used by a particular Baptist church. Attempting to prey on the emotionally vulnerable is not on the good side of my list.

Much like Youtube, Scribd is blocked here. I can't see first hand if this is one of those "save an addict" ploys, but it strikes that kind of chord with me. The plea for advice, the coincidental appearance of a survivor. Ah well, given where I've been living and working, I'm probably just too suspicious of coincidences. Here, they are usually too well choreographed.

In response to the OP: Is it affecting your life? If it's affecting your job, relationships, family, friends, etc. then you're playing too much.

If you're playing too much and think you should cut back on your playing time but can't, then you have a REAL PROBLEM.

A) not affecting real life (see above) = probably not a problem.
B) affecting real life, so you cut back on your playing time until the problems are solved = it's cool
C) affecting real life and you want to cut back and/or try to cut back and you can't do it = REAL PROBLEM! QUIT NOW!

Like any other addictive thing, if it's hurting your life and you can't be moderate in your usage, you have to just totally quit and never do it again.

(That's why I don't drink anymore.)

One should be tolerant of everything, except intolerance. I dislike preaching as much as the next guy, but unless we hear them out, how do we know they're preaching in the first place? Summarily dismissing them on a generalizing suspicion is just prejudice. Now, if it turns out the eBook in mention is 100 pages worth of "the Lord saved me from my MMO addiction," I'll be the first to light a torch, but until then... meh.
