Survey approved 4-30-2012 ~Administrator Kaolian

Hi!

I'm doing a research project for my writing class.

The survey should only take 5 minutes of your time.

Thanks in advance!

I went ahead and took the survey since you took the time to get it approved and it was quite short. However, one thing I must ask:

University of Denver. This isn't gonna be the beginning of another wave of thirty of these things again, is it? What I mean is, are you in a writing class where WoW is the focus?

Oh, Lars and Penates! Kao, how could you ever allow University of Denver to start posting surveys again?

OP -- not no, but hell no.

I'm never entirely convinced of the value of information gleaned from choices on a fairly short scale in answer to relatively vague questions, but I actually enjoyed the second section. Nothing I said surprised me, but I'd not collated and summarised my current position on WoW and it was an interesting exercise to do it now. I really am just in it for battlegrounds on my gnome rogue at the moment, and it's only the excellent visuals and affordable subs that keep me playing at all.

University of Denver. Smiley: disappointed

I answered the questions, so if you fail the class don't show up crying and blaming me. Mackerel was the answer right? Smiley: sly

They won't go away; this is how they resume these "Research", the 579 of them.

The population for those who participated in this survey was limited to those in the proximity of in and around the University of Denver. As found in this study, World of Warcraft ranks high in levels of motivation for the elements of immersion, achievement, and socialization, and these are what drives gamers to play World of Warcraft and continue to play. However, as stated before in the introduction, the area of motivators is broad and expanding for World of Warcraft and other videogames and there are still answers out there to be researched. The study shown here is only a small part as to why this is the case; there is room for more research to find out more answers as to why the specific qualities of World of Warcraft keep gamers so interested.

We still only allow one survey a month, right?

Someone needs to start making a monthly poll thread. Poll counts as a survey, right?

Yes, poll counts as a survey:3 (17.6%)
No, poll doesn't count as a survey:0 (0.0%)
Your mom's a survey:9 (52.9%)
Does a poll about a survey count as a survey? Or a poll?:5 (29.4%)

Oh goodie, first there is multiple choice and now short essays? Smiley: glare

Done and done. Make sure to tell your class to do surveys on other games. Like Scrabble or... Clue. Butler did it in the dining room with a knife.

So the research project is complete. Thought I'd share my results with everyone.

The method for my research came in two parts:

1. The survey that some of you took
2. Personal journals of two participants who played the game from level 1 to 20. One participant played the game before this study and the other has never played the game before.

Levels were organized in sets: low (1-30), med (31-60), high (61-85).

In response to the research question: is there a relationship between level of character and how satisfying specific positive reinforcements are to a player? This study can conclude that there were different rates of positive reinforcement between low, medium, and high level groups. Evidence of this includes the observations like: when a player is in the beginning stages, levels (1-20), of the game, leveling up is the one of the most rewarding positive reinforcements for the player; PvP battles are a more satisfying positive reinforcement within the mid-range and high level sets; that camaraderie with real friends is vastly more important amongst higher levels; that personal connection to the virtual world increases as level increases; and that personal connection to a virtual world is more popular within mid-range levels (31-60).

Woah, a survey poster that actually came back and informed us of the results. Smiley: eek Make sure to tell your class that at least I appreciate that. Oh and tell them also to not come here just to post surveys, no offense. Smiley: tongue
