Due to the recent post about haklulz or whatever I decided to check my account. I have an authenticator but today I noticed something different. When I first logged into WoW today I had to use my authenticator as usual. When I logged out or timed out at various times and logged back in then it doesn't ask for the auth number. However when I go to my battle.net account it still asks for it each time. Is this usual? This is the first time I haven't had to resubmit an auth number when logging back in due to a DC.

That's weird. Whenever I d/c, I have to enter in my Authenticator number as well.

That said, I haven't d/c'd in a while. Something recent, maybe?

It's new today, if you log in from one place all the time it won't ask so much when you log into the game. I'm not sure how I feel about it, it's nice and all but....

Have a link to the supplied info?

I wouldn't mind not putting it in all the time for things like DCs but I would still rather put in a number on a daily basis at least for the first login. If anything it lets me know the thing is still working.

If that's true, then I think I'm probably fine with it. The only way I could see that being an issue is if A) They somehow manage to take control of my computer and ruin my account from afar, or B) They manage to trick Blizzard servers into thinking that I'm logging in from my house, when they are really logging in from their hackshack.

It seems like a nice convenience move, and I'm sure if things turn south they'll revert it.

I don't know how I feel about this. It seems to just be making things less safe for no real reason. I mean, you'll always need to have the authenticator with you, in case it asks. So is it really such an inconvenience to have to use it each time?

That said, a hacker would need to be pretty skilled to exploit the system (assuming people don't connect via a proxy, at least).

I have multiple accounts, on multiple computers (I dual-box much), so I GUESS this is going to be more convenient for those times I'm not only toon-hopping, but account hopping... BUT, as someone else said, if I don't enter the authenticator number I may feel as if it's not working... hmmm....

It sounds like it should be pretty safe to me. I mean if it works well enough. If you are logged in in one location and someone hacks you and 2-3 minutes attempt to log in half way around the world I'm sure that should throw up a red flag. Plus it will make them have to input a code still.

I noticed it this morning. I don't need an authenticator to log into WoW, but I do need it to log in to Battle.net. I opened a ticket a few hours ago, before I read this thread. I thought it was a weird bug with WoW and was afraid of getting hacked.

I'm in agreement with this. My account was hacked and all my gold/items stolen over a year ago; it was like a punch to the gut out of nowhere. That was what prompted me to get an authenticator. I've grown a bit paranoid about account security since then.

Okay, I officially hate this new change. >.<

It hadn't asked me for the code since earlier this week. And I ultimately forgot about the authenticator.

Long story short... I'm at my parent's house, there's nothing going on, and I forgot my authenticator at my apartment. >_< And I didn't even think about it until it asked for the code.

I wish this was something you could toggle on or off.

There was a post on MMO Champ

http://www.mmo-champion.com/content/2345-Battle.net-Authenticator-Changes

Quote:
If you use an authenticator – and we hope you do – you may soon notice that an authenticator prompt may not appear with every login. We’ve recently updated our authentication system to intelligently track your login locations, and if you’re logging in consistently from the same place, you may not be asked for an authenticator code. This change is being made to make the authenticator process less intrusive when we’re sure the person logging in to your account is you.

We hope to continue improving the authenticator system to ensure the same or greater security, while improving and adding features to make having one a more user friendly experience. If you don’t already have a Battle.net Authenticator attached to your account, don’t wait until it’s too late - http://us.battle.net/en/security/checklist

I really don't. Which is weird, because I would have liked the idea of it before I got an authenticator...

I'm so used to firing up the phone app before starting the game (silly load time) that this is actually more annoying than helpful. Instead of having to load the authenticator app every time, I now have to play the guessing game.

Of course, if it adjusts to my location within a couple of plays and didn't pop the authenticator field, I'd not mind it at all. Has to be consistent, whichever way it goes. Either always authentication or never (from the same location).

I like the change. It's more convenient, and may even provide some protection against a man in the middle attack.

They didn't do a very good job of letting the masses know this change was coming down. There were 3 capped threads last time I looked (couple days ago) and the overwhelming majority of them pretty much said "wtf?"

I, too, thought I had been hacked or something weird was going on. I probably would have felt better about it if it had been clearly communicated and not buried in patch notes (if it was even there at all which I'm pretty sure it wasn't).

Is that trade-off worth a hacker being able to spoof your IP and bypass your authenticator, though?

You're assuming Blizzard only tests your ip address. They could use any combination of ip address, mac address, machine specs, or maybe some generated random number we don't even know about.... We may learn more in time. But yeah, it wasn't communicated as it should have been.

That's easy enough to check. All we need is one person who regularly plays WoW on one computer in their home, but has it installed on another they don't generally log into. If it doesn't ask for their code, then it is just IP.

I just now signed onto my son's pc, which is in the same room as mine. It asked me for my authenticator.

So they must check Mac addresses then. Interesting.

From what I have read, they are doing something to your computer's registry that the game can recognize on future log-in attempts. It has nothing to do with your IP address. I don't know enough about computers to fully understand this, but I'm sure some of you will.
