Blizzards Schedule for the Next Few YearsFollow

Let me start by saying...

THERE IS NO PROOF THAT THIS IS OFFICIAL.

It could be made up for all we know.

But rumor has it that the picture on the front page of MMO-Champ is Blizzard's current schedule for the next few years.

Not much special there, except for two things: WoW expansions 4 and 5 (both inevitable), and something by the name of "Titan," Blizzard's very hush-hush new MMOFPS. Titan's only just a codename, even. Supposedly. Maybe.

Anywho, there's not really much of substance, but it's still worth a read.

Am I the only one who felt a brief twinge of panic at not seeing anything in the WoW group past 2014?

And then that other voice in my head yelled NERD!!!!

There's WoWX4 in the second quarter of 2012.

I may be reading too much into this but two 18 month life-span expansions seems to me to indicate both will be for 5 levels (86-90,91-95). I certainly expected that the one after Cata would be for 5 but I am a bit surprised at the second one. And of course its noteworthy that they are slowing down.

If they keep to their current schedule of 18-24 months per expansion, another WoW release wouldn't be due out until 2016, and there's nothing that far out. It's probably a 5-year plan, and a 6th WoW expansion is beyond that.

or the next one will be a 10er (85-95) and the last one will be the OMFGENDOFWOW 95-100

LOL.

Diablo3 (no x-packs) at 2012?

Assuming this is not official, whoever made this, is being an optimist.

I'm guessing they need to look at WoW's revenue over the next couplefew years before making a decision on a 2016 expansion as well. I'm sure WoW has exceeded all their expectations, but they still know it can't last forever.

So the new MMO is FPS? Wah. I can understand not creating another entire fantasy world ("Let's call it Zazeroth!"). But at the same time, there would be some business sense in developing a new RPG to make sure the game we start playing when we stop playing WoW is theirs. The segment that sees WoW as a cool video game first and an RPG second may move to their FPS (although isn't there a lot more competition in that space?), but the segment that sees it as a cool D&D style RPG first and a video game second won't. I suppose they have a better handle on their demographics than I do though. Especially as I have no kind of handle on it at all.

Or maybe they'll also do some sort of WoW II rather than expanding this one indefinitely?

According to the chart, D3 is scheduled for 4th quarter 2011. I'll believe it when I see it.

Blizzard announced back in July 2009 that Sam Raimi will direct the WoW movie. I believe Raimi has since agreed to work on other projects before working on the WoW film, though.

Uwe Boll was some how caught up in the movie rumors before Raimi was tapped to direct.

Everyone rejoiced.

A key thing to consider about charts like this is that they are generally a "tops-down" view point from executives and no necessarily a "bottoms-up" from the folks actually creating/programming the content. These types of time-lines are almost always shown in relation to projected financial analysis and secondary reports. None of which we have of course. And these can affect time targets a great deal.

In my experience with similar projections (both within corporate structures and as a design/marketing consultant), they're almost always optimistic and used more for where/when labor-hours, cash and other resources are expected to be allocated rather than a hard plan on delivery.

/two cents

edit: But the idea that a year from now we'll get D3 makes me giddy like a school boy. Man that's a fun game (at least so far).

I am personally hoping they go for more of a Borderlands style of shooter. Not the clunky interface but how it is a fps but with rpg elements tied into it. While there will be people who hate the fps aspect I am interested if Blizzard can really pull that kind of gameplay off.

I believe Uwe called Blizzard and asked to direct it and the guy in charge more or less said "Hell no!"

Yeah, right, I was going stir-crazy staring at the chart trying to figure out exactly where the little green line was, and I posted that right after I woke up this morning lol.

But yeah, that was the whole thing of my joke there... I think a Q4 '11 is quite an optimistic prediction lol.

That's pretty much it. I believe the exact wording was "We will not sell the rights to you... Especially not to you." (Emphasis mine).

Hey, at least it hasn't gone the way of Duke Nukem Forever, yet.

I'd never even heard of Uwe Boll before reading this thread, but I HAVE seen bits of the Farcry movie, and wow was that terrible...

I will say that there's no way in hell I'm playing a FPS MMO though. I don't blame blizz for not wanting to make another fantasy style MMO, but I don't care for futuristic games much and in particular I can't stand FPS games.

If you haven't seen it yet, Gary, Fony and Lore discussed this rumored schedule on episode 7 of Legendary. Also, Blizzard gave the following response to Wowhead regarding the schedule:

Blizzard wrote:

"As always, we appreciate the interest in Blizzard's current and upcoming games, but we don't comment on rumors or speculation and we don't have any new announcements to make. Right now we're fully focused on the upcoming launch of World of Warcraft: Cataclysm, and we're very much looking forward to celebrating that event with players around the world starting on Dec. 7."

I know the quote isn't informative in the least, but I figured it was worth mentioning.
