So I rolled on a PvP server...Follow

The GF and I were bored one day. This resulted in the decision to roll some characters on a PvP realm to see what it was like. So far I've had to reevaluate my idea of self preservation. What I learned from years on a PvE realm is "Roads safe/fast" and "AFK in town good". How incorrect this is on a PvP realm. I find myself actively shifting my view behind me to see whats going on. I NEVER run on the roads if I can avoid it and I certainly do NOT afk in towns. I may as well just poison myself and watch my HP whittle away.

It's kind of exciting to see people actively attacking our towns and main cities. We're a little disappointed in one aspect though. We haven't yet come across anyone our own level from the opposite faction to fight against. The only PvP deaths Ive had are in towns. Flying into a dead flight master and being one shotted in the inns by people at max level. We heard Stranglethorn and hillsbrad were PvP glory at it's finest, yet we haven't run into anyone yet. I chose a server with an equal population so I don't get the problem. Are there are other hot spots that would be good to be in aside from BGs?

Chances are I'm just going to transfer off the realm if this keeps up. There is no PvP sport in being killed by people you stand no chance against.

Welcome to PvP servers. You'll likely get some PvP action upon hitting Outland, because that's where all the quests converge around 60. Until then it is just too darn spread out, and so few people level these days anyway...

If my experience is any indication, the majority of the world PVP you do will be at 80, defending your own towns or attacking theirs. I've run into like-level PVP while leveling in Hillsbrad, STV, The Hinterlands, even Desolace, and it picks up more in Outland and Northrend, but it's much much more common to just get ganked and move on. I rarely get camped, though, so it's really not that big an inconvenience.

No, there is no sport in killing someone 60 levels lower than you, but generally that's not supposed to be the sport. Some of the gankers are just stupid/bored/can't beat anyone their own level, but for many, ganking is just laying the bait, and they're trying to draw out the higher levels for a brawl. (See Also: "Tarren Mill is Under Attack!" and "Don't make me get my main!")

Make sure you have WorldDefense turned on while leveling. If the Crossroads is lighting up fifty times a minute, that may be the time to go quest in Silverpine instead.

That's because they are in their own starting areas, trying to level while getting ganked by the max level people in your faction. It should get more interesting in that regard as you get to the higher levels and the level zones overlap.

I rerolled on Kazzak for the Alla guild, it is my first experience of a pvp server.

Tanaris and Ungoro have been good fun for me, I see alot of similarly levelled people, and as an Enhancement shaman I tear through clothies before they know I am there.
There seems to be an unspoken agreement between the people who are levelling. If you meet them while performing a quest then it is fair game, but when you meet them at a mutual quest giver then people tend to leave each other alone.

As well, the new Random Dungeon system is a highway to 60 for many people and they don't even end up doing much or any quests to 60. You should see it more as you progress into 60 in OL and onward to NR.

This, aka as ganking, really is my main problem with PvP servers. Aside from the fact that the people on there are on average simply less mature than on PvE and RP servers, that is. I wouldn't even that much mind the thrill of sometimes ending up locked in a fight with someone of the same level, just because we both need to 'defend our right to quest' in a specific area. The thing just is that this is rarely the case. 90% out of all world PvP encounters were actual battle takes place involve a high level ganking me. That isn't "leveling with the thrill of possible sudden PvP". It's just being grieved and it being harder for you to do what you actually enjoy.

I'm also learning quite a bit of patience. I was just killed just outside a town. Three level 80 characters are on epic mounts camping my body. So I'm gonna afk near my corpse till they realize I wont let them get me twice. I'm even taking time for forum posts.

I rolled on a PvP server last week. Made another DK and the only World PvP I've done is when an 80 one shot me while was I working on my Herb skill.
I'm now 70 and have seen some peeps, but they all run "away". Then they come back with not just 1 but more the 1 80 and then I may take 3 hits before I die..

The PvP realm is in the same BG as my PvE realm, kind of sucks cuz the BG can never win. People just don't understand Battle Grounds.

I've also noticed that people seem to care a whole lot more about GS on the PvP realm when it comes time to do Dungeons and 10/25 Raids. If you are not rocking 5k+ and already have the Achievement your not getting in (guess people have to transfer around realms to get achievements lol) ... kind of silly. Don't they know that GS =/= Skill.

A guildie of mine recently said "Gearscore for raiders is like Goldshire for roleplayers".

Come to think of it, I'm going to sig that.

For those who don't know; Goldshire RP equals cybering 12-year old quarter-demon quarter-dragon half-smurf players who spend four hours per evening poweremoting their way along a crowd of lollertrons.

That is possibly the most awesome thing I have ever read.

I recently got my rogue through STV. Wasn't nearly as bad as I remembered it to be back in the day. A few gankings happened. I ganked a few people. Some actual battles with same level people but over all was fairly mellow.

More recently when I dragged my priest through Outland it was a bit more feisty.

Herbing in Sholazar can be intense. As were the Tourney dailies when I still did them. I actually did dailies in all PvP gear as I was guaranteed a fight would happen.

I imagine if I was on a PvE server I would find it boring.

Nothing in this game has been as frustrating, slow, and annoying as trying to level in Stranglethorn on my lock when he was still on Blackrock (arguably the most active pvp server in my battlegroup). And while I still have toons there, I seriously doubt I'd quest on them ever again. Having absolutely no chance of survival against a level-capped ganker just isn't entertainment to me and they were all over the damn place.

If I were to level my pvp server toons. I'd sit in Dalaran and instance them up to 80. Which really, sadly, removes all of the potential fun of being on a pvp server in the first place.

I've always been on a pvp server and honestly I was hardly ever ganked. Even in the off chance now that I'm on Boulderfist I see an alliance when I'm out and about in the world if its sub 70 I usually never touch them.

On the other hand, when I do see 80's when I'm out mining between BG's I'll gladly kill them.

The awesome LFG tool killed the world. Not just World PvP, but the whole world. It's empty on most realms, sadly.

As for high levels that think it's somehow sport to gank lowbies and camp places like Crossroads - they are failures. This was fun in 2004. People who still enjoy it are often the same people with 300 arena ratings.

I would agree with other posters above - Outland and NR should be more active, as the quests there are more worthy of people's time, and I think you'll find the zones more populated.

WoW is really becoming a lobby-based game these days. It's not a typical text-chat lobby like Diablo. It's an advanced, 3d lobby called Dalaran.

When I started WoW a friend was playing on a PVP server, I was skeptical because I'm not much of one for pvp, but as it turns out it hasn't been all that bad. Yes there are places that are worse than others like STV, Tanaris, and Un' Goro and you do get people who like to gank and sometimes camp you, but other than that, if you party with at least 1 other person, or if you're decked out in boa's then you're usually pretty safe.

I've found this to be true, but that makes it all the more frustrating. When I was levelling in Coldarra, Northrend at 72-73, I was being ganked by an 80 Death Knight in (welfare) epics. He kept opening with DG after which I blinked and usually proceded to either attack him from range while he couldn't reach me or run for safety. Yet I kept dying because he simply trinketed and 2-shot me or got plain lucky (I Ice Block his DoTs, hit invisibility and lag on one of his melee hits removes it). Players like him are complete and utter noobs whose asses I would kick completely, were we equal level. Which makes it even more annoying to me when I can't kill them simply because they outlevel and outgear me. If you're such a sucky player, you shouldn't win any battle. If you do it's a massively unfair fight and that's what pisses me off royally.

We'll I FINALLY had a PvP experience more to my liking. I had just finished mining and was headed back to town when I saw on my left a group of 6 red names. I panicked and turned to run off but of course they were all level 80 and they were all running after me. So naturally I bubble hearthed while franticly scrolling over all of them looking for a warrior or priest. There was none. I can't tell you just how satisfying it was to see 6 players waiting for my bubble to wear off to kill me only to have their hopes and dreams shattered as the little guy got the best of them in at least a small way.

PvP Realm aside, bubble-hearthing is the only way to hearth as a Paladin. Do it for Uther.

I agree.

On my druid I only leave Dal to do my JC daily or go to a raid. Then again I don't hang out either. Same goes for the priest who never leaves Dal unless I need to farm BoA enchant mats. They don't have gathering professions though so they really have no need to leave town. The DK goes farming still but none of the 2 that still could quest in NR do so as LFG is more lucrative and I get enchanting mats from heroics anyway.

The starter zones are still lively in NR but as you get past HF, BT and DB there gets to be too many various places people could choose to level and people start wanting to get better dungeon gear to help ease the transition in to heroic grinding.

Sex is a passing thing. Being corpse-camped senseless after a level 80 ganked you up, down and sideways in Stranglethorn Vale for the first time... now that one you will cherish forever.

And by cherish I mean bottle up deep inside until you one day finally snap, either while accidentally stumbling across a low level in Stranglethorn Vale, having had the roles reversed all of a sudden, or when someone starts spouting sh*t in a random dungeon and leaves for no apparent reason - that guy also being the tank you waited 20 minutes in queue for - prompting you to fly off the handle with remarks like 'I am going to crack open a can of F*CK YOU UP on the next one who leaves' while mashing the keys so hard that your keyboard starts whimpering, begging you to stop hurting it...

Except... it's not the keyboard. It's your daughter. She's standing next to you with pajamas on, hugging her favorite teddy bear like she's afraid of losing it, or as if she's trying to shield herself against something. You look at the big, teary eyes and glance over at your estranged wife who is standing in the doorway, sobbing slightly.

Turning the chair towards your daughter, giving the monitor one last glance, you ask your baby girl 'What, sweety? What did you say?' and she repeats the question you so easily overheard: 'Daddy, are you mad at mommy and me?'

And that's when it hits you like a truck loaded with bricks. The last six years of your life flash by, uncovered in all their naked reality as the bottled-up anger has been let out. You see yourself yelling at your wife over dinner due to her "wanting to be carried through content". You see yourself neglecting appointments due to "pwning some nubs" and you see yourself too busy delivering virtual hate onto a random stranger to say good night to your daughter. Your daughter whom you barely know, having spent more time in the game than in her life.

Right then and there, you realize that that single moment back in Stranglethorn Vale never really left you. You thought it didn't matter. You thought you were tough enough to stick it out. Too late you now realize that there is no escaping that single crucial moment. There is no running from the truth. No matter how deep down you bury it, it will eventually come back, and the deeper you bury it, the more momentum it has.

So you open your teary eyes and look at your baby girl, and you say you're sorry. Sorry for not listening when she asks you a question. Sorry for not saying good night to her. Sorry for not being a good dad. With a broken heart and embracing your kid, you get up and walk to your crying wife. You hug her and tell her that you love her and that you're so sorry for not having been there for her. She cries on your shoulder as you slowly turn about. Pushing her head from your shoulder you look her deeply in those big, beautiful eyes and brush away a loose strand of hair. How could you ever have given up all of this? You kiss her gently, thinking back to that terrible moment that caused all of this. That moment where your character was killed by a level 80 in Stranglethorn Vale by the same guy who... who...

WHO JUST AFK-GANKED YOUR CHARACTER AGAIN!

Smiley: mad NEEEEEEEERDRAAAAAAAAGE! Smiley: mad

Um... yeah, go with the sex.

Bah, 5 AM and I can barely see the letters... sorry for the rambling.

PVP Realms suck. Sry... They do.

My first toon was on a horrible realm with a low population and poor balance between the factions. I read the posts on sites like this and was really drinking the kool-ade... PVP servers are a great idea, but functionally just don't work. If the factions get too out of balance or if you decide to start a new lower lvl toon, you just face really bad odds.

I did think it was fun knowing that you could be attacked at any moment. But when it came to actual game play - it was 90% ganking (Whether it was a 70 killing a 20 or 5 70s killing 1 level 70)

Just my opinion...

That's why you write their name down, make a toon on their faction side, and do a /who whenever you can and try to find him. :P

My enjoyment of the game comes from doing quests, exploring, and running instances. When I found myself spending the majority of my limited game time walking back to my ganked corpse, it was time to move to a PVE server.

I'm all for PVP servers if you have plenty of time to play and don't mind the walk. I, for one, prefer to actually play and not spend time spinning wheels because some 80 had a rough day at his job at Burger King and needs to unload RAAAAAGE on lowbies. I seriously think that you should not be able to attack anyone more than 10 levels beneath you unless they are in territory that belongs to your faction - or attack you first. That would still promote PVP while cutting down on the ganking.

Cheers,
Jorge
