tidbit on the wow movieFollow

the 1up 4guys podcast interviewed the original screenwriter for the wow movie:

Quote:
"I did actually write three different drafts of the script, and I worked very closely with Blizzard over the period of about a year or so," Whitta explained. "I think in the end I came up with a movie that I thought was really cool, but what happened with Sam [Raimi] is that they always wanted a big director, and they landed one of the biggest with Sam. I think he'll make an incredible movie. But he just had a very different vision. He wanted to tell a completely different story, so they went a different way."

So what did Whitta have in mind for the film? "I thought I did a good job that people who love the game would get a good account of the world. All the major races, all the major places, and some of the lesser known ones were in there. There were some cool Easter eggs if you really knew the game back to front." Whitta compared his "Easter eggs" to the scene in the first Pirates of the Caribbean film mimicking a classic element of the ride, where men in a cell try to lure the dog with the keys in its mouth -- little such touches and details that fans would pick up on.

"I felt that it was true to the world of the game," Whitta summed up. He explained that the biggest challenge was telling a story that would be true to what fans expect from a WoW movie, but also accessible for those who've never played WoW (if any such people still exist). "I felt we did a good job of that, and I'm sure Sam's version will do the same," he said.

You'll still be able to hear Whitta's words in a movie theater next year, though: He wrote the screenplay for the upcoming post-apocalyptic sci-fi flick The Book of Eli, starring Denzel Washington.

"they went a different way"

This is where I start cringing. I want the movie to be good, and pretty much like Whitta had in mind would fit the bill (generally speaking).

But a complete merchandise exploited film will ruin it, for me at least.

I'm pretty sure I won't be watching it.

Why?

For the same reason I don't watch:

-Any non-canon movie based on an anime I watch (for instance, the Naruto movies--though I don't actually watch or read the series anymore).
-Any live-action movie based on an anime I watch (such as the Death Note ones, or the DBZ one. Too painful).
-Movies based on books or television shows (I consider WoW somewhere in between) that I like. The more I like the canon piece, the less I want to see the movie. (Harry Potter movies).

And I tend to like the stories Metzen writes less than many of the other WC writers. I just don't find his idea of epic as... epic.

This. At first I wasn't sure about which 'way the ended up going', but once that became clear a small voice in the back of my head said "oh no =(". It's not that I don't trust Raimi but everything 'Whitta' has said in that little tidbit makes me trust him a lot more.

I just keep expecting that this will come out like Transformers 2 but in a fantasy world.

Like those stereotypical stories of someone who has this really good script and great ideas for the direction it should go but no one else is game enough to do it that way, and it bounces around a few places, leading nowhere. Then they tell you that they finally found funding and it's all going down a really interesting path ... Until you find out that the new producers are B-grade **** makers. So, it doesn't end up as a good story, good action or even good **** at all. Smiley: glare

For obvious reasons this has potential to be an amazing movie, so I hold out hope. But Hollywood does some awful things with potential most of the time =/ We'll see. Is there any information during what time line this takes place? Any any info on an estimated release date?

I remember when Niell Blomkamp (who went on to make the fantastic District 9) was attached to a Halo movie with Peter Jackson producing, then they went LOL JK, POSTPONED INDEFINITELY!

I haven't dared to hope for a good game to movie adaptation since then.

FTFY.

I can't think of a single game to movie adaptation that was decent, let alone good.

Ahh, yes. Uwe Boll. God's gift to cinema. When the Lord Almighty felt that the likes of Steven Spielberg, Francis Ford Coppola and Martin Scorsese were just trash-grubbing hacks, who weren't pulling their weight, he crafted a saviour for the motion picture arm of world art.

Thank you, Uwe Boll, you have opened our eyes and led us to the promised land. Smiley: bowdown Smiley: tongue

Uwe Boll is my hero.

No other director can take a video game and go "Hey! I'll make this into a semi-pornographic B-movie!" For that, I admire him. And I sort of hate that he never did a Tomb Raider movie. Smiley: sly

Yeah, I can't dismiss him too much. He doesn't make anything truly offensive or anything and, really, if you want a blood/fu*k-fest, most of the time it has to be B-grade cause major studios won't usually sign on for that. He and his cast and crew have fun making their stuff and enjoy the product. That's no bad position to be in, however much I'd never sit and watch one of his films (at least, not without being paid to or to shout swear words at the screen while laughing).

I guess I'm just of the opinion that, if you want Tomb Raider (or whatever) with sex scenes, why not just wait for a real **** producer to just make one themselves. They've already done The Brady Bunch, Star Trek and all sorts of things. Uwe Boll films are just like foreplay but without reaching the sweet spot - plus, they have about the same production values as a **** film, so, ***** it.

(Having said that, though, Kristanna Loken having her boobie licked is nice. We do owe Mr. Boll a very big thank you for that.)

I don't think I stopped laughing when I watched In the Name of the King: A Dungeon Siege Tale. Of course, I can understand that you want to have some connection between a movie and the format that it started with. But a farmer named Farmer? Really? His wife didn't even have a name for him? What did they call him as a boy? Boy?

Ray "Goodfellas" Liotta was such a believable sorcerer that it hurt (/sarcasm). It was a slight stretch to imagine the gorgeous Claire Forlani was Jason Staham's wife. After movies like the Transporter series, the Crank movies and a gem like Death Race, Jason fits perfectly in the role of farmer-turned-warrior. Let's not forget the role of King Konreid, played by none other than Burt Reynolds. - a perfect typecast if there ever was one. I kept waiting for Jackie Gleason or Dom DeLuise to make a cameo. Smiley: dubious

In all honesty, Uwe's movies are so bad that they're like comedies. Bad comedies. However, I have mixed feelings about the movie. Regardless of how well it's done, I think unless it's on an epic scale the size of LotR, a lot of people are going to completely trash it, because expectations are already sky-high.

I just spent a couple of minutes looking through all my videos to disprove this, but I find I had to agree. All movies I had initially in mind are adaptations of books, not games. Max Payne is probably the best game-to-movie adaptation I've seen and that one hovers just below 'decent'. That said, if that alledged 'Warhammer movie' I've heard so much rumors about is anything like the trailers from Warhammer Online, it will definitely be epic.

I thought the Resident Evil movies were pretty cool. Not groundbreaking but entertaining. I pretty much watch anything with Mila in it after the awesome scifi that is the 5th Element.

Silent Hill was bearable, actually. Not top of the line but I could watch without laughing really, really hard like on "The Master Uwe" movies. Same was with Resident Evil, it was quite decent. First part, the rest went down the gutter.

I wonder how Prince of Persia will end up. the director made couple solid movies(Donnie Brasco anyone?), so it may be good.

I'm still a bit tepid. They rejected Michael Bey so maybe they won't be whoring it out completely. Raimi is very hit and miss. Him being the director leaves me neutral, but rejecting the writer who seemed to be making it for the fans seems like a bad idea. The fans will be much more forgiving and appreciate it for different things than a general audience. Trying to pander to the masses is just not going to work out.

Movie Synopsis...source is Blizzcon 2007 apparantly, again from IMDB

Thrall will be in the movie. It will be told primarily from the Alliance point of view The time of the movie is set about 1 year before World of Warcraft begins. The film is mainly about cultures in conflict. It won't be an adventure movie like LoTR, more of a war film.
