Hacked?Follow

I recently started playing WoW on my girlfriend's computer. We had a friend add some hard drive space and some minor tweaks to get it up to par (although, later found out the work he did to it did not help at all). Anyway, to the subject, I was playing about a week ago and heard a loud clank sound from the computer then the game ran very slow and finally the computer just shut down. Just "blink" and it was off.

So, I asked the same friend about it and he said it might have been a hack.

He thinks someone pinged the computer enough that it shut down.

I find this hard to believe since he installed a firewall. And, the computer continues to have this problem.

My thought is that her computer only has 256 mb of RAM and couldn't handle the game. Plus, her fan in the computer sounds like it's going bad.

I've since then removed the game from her computer and am looking into purchasing a new one.

Anyway, back to the hack theory, is that possible? Thanks for any advice.

imo... no. doesn't sound like a hack to me, the noise kinda gives it away: sounds more like your hard drive is taking a dump. Have someone with least marginal computer knowledge try running a diagnostics program like Troubleshooter or similiar, and find out if you need to replace. Be aware if it IS the case you might not be possible to save your data w/o expensive recovery services after a full crash, so if you can still access your disks for the time being - then consider backing up your important stuff now.

my computer runs off a 256 and i can play just fine, i also have Final Fantasy 11 online and Guild Wars installed ontop of WoW so you can ignore that theory, one of the things i can think of is maybe your computer overheated, i'm not a super wiz when it comes to this stuff but i do know a friend who's computer overheated cause he had the cooler fan on the back blocked. what kind of anti-spyware/firewall stuff did he install? cause it may also be user error a.k.a. your friend messed something up when improving the computer, these are all just speculation, but i hope it gives you some ideas.

sounds like either an overheating issue, dead power supply, or dead hard drive.

Depending on the nature of the clank I would guess broken fan (easy), broken power supply (wouldn't run at all) or broken hard drive (you're screwed). That your friend says it's a hack shows his ignorance. Have someone that knows what they're doing take a look.

A clank and running slow are one of two issues, broken fan on the CPU or broken fan on the GFX card. If it was a Hard drive issue then windows wouldn't even load after a while, I am 99.99999% sure it's a fan problem, look for a broken fan, fix it and your back in gaming goodness.

wwdragon

P.S do not let that friend who said it's a hack even come near your computer again :D

the loud clank was probably a heatsink falling off something important, the video card, the northbridge, or even worse, the cpu itself. open up your pc and see if you find an obviously misplace chunk of metal. it can be easily cleaned off and reapplied if so.

and no you cannot run wow just fine on 256mb of ram, you can't even run winxp alone fine on 256mb ram.

All good advice above. The infamous "ping of death" your friend spoke of would not get to your computer through the firewall. A little knowledge can be a dangerous thing.

Thanks for all the tips. I agree that it couldn't have been a hack. It does sound like the PC is overheating. We're going to talk to a Dell Dealer in town and find out if we can get it fixed or should replace it.

Oh, and another item...I really appreciate the friendliness of this message board. I've experienced other boards that aren't as helpful (or friendly). So, thanks for that too.
