im a 42 hunter and want a new pet my stv tiger is getting old and ugly. what should i get?
You could get a nice wolf from the Hinterlands, or a scorpid from Tanaris, or a gorilla from stv. If you want to stick with a cat, King Bangalash (43 elite) will be tamable for you in another level (don't forget your freeze trap for taming). There is no one best pet, but some have special abilities like dash (my favorite), howl, screech, or prowl. It's up to you to pick what you like, but Petopia is a good resource:

anyone no wat pet has dash that a lvl 42 could get?

Badlands: Ridge Stalker Patriarch (40-41)
Feralas: Longtooth Runner (40-41)
Stranglethorn Vale: Bhag'thera (40+), Elder Shadowmaw Panther (41-43)
Tanaris: Starving Blisterpaw (41-42)
... or you could just get a Vale Screecher (Wind Serpent ) with Dive (flyer equivalent of Dash) and Lightning Breath instead. With the new scaling mechanisms they do very nice nature damage.

I really enjoy boars charge ability.
I use Hayoc, an elite Windserpent from Dustwallow Marsh. I had to get dive 2 and lightning breath 4 from a windserpent from Ferales and bite 7 from a Saltwater Snapjaw (48-50/The Hinterlands) but he rocks. He's level 41, which is right in your level range.
He is a hell of a tank (at level 55 he has 5900+ armor), and he does mad damage (123-155). His 2.0 attack speed disrupts casters, he and in addition he is a nice white skinned windserpent which is on the rare side.
I have used cats, wolves and boars. I will not give up my Windserpent any time soon.
