Playing wow from overseasFollow

#1 Dec 08 2006 at 11:32 PM Rating: Default
Hello. I need some help again.

I currently live in Korea and would like to start playing wow, but I have no idea how to get an English version of the game. Any version I buy here will obviously be in Korean.

Someone told me that I can download and English version of the game from this link:
http://www.worldofwarcraft.com/downloads/wowclient-download.html

but it asks for a trial activiation key. I don't know what that is. I do own an a brand new copy of the korean wow game (it came free with the new computer i bought) and i tried entering the cd key as the trial activation code, but it didn't work.

Can somebody tell me what I'm supposed to do? I tried asking this in the blizzard wow technical problems forum, but they won't let me post there because I don't currently have a wow membership. I also emailed them 2 days ago, but have yet to get a repsonse.

Thanks.

there is probably a better way, but if I were you I'd just order a copy and have it sent to you. Yeah, you'll have to wait for the mail and all, but that is the best way I can think of. I play from overseas as well, but being military we had english copies for sale on base. Maybe check out ebgames, amazon, or something like that.

Order a copy, but not from amazon.com as they don't ship games overseas.

Or another option would be, go to www.worldofwarcraft.com and download the client from there. I have never done it, so I am not sure exactly how to do it, but I'm fairly sure it would be possible.

I live in China. The official word from Blizzard technical support when I had a similar problem was:

Quote:
we are not initially permitting users to connect to regions other than their home region because we cannot guarantee a positive gaming experience for users connecting to servers outside their supported region.

I explained that I did not want to play *outside* my region, I just wanted to be able to play in English:

Quote:
Allow me to rephrase the question: I am a customer who lives and works in China, has done so for a considerable time, and am on contract to continue to do so for some time to come. Playing in English would appear to require me to play *outside* of my home region. Is there a way to set the language on my PC, so that my gaming experience is enhanced by being able to read the game, while still playing in my home region?

I understand your issue now. I apologize for the trouble, unfortunately, there's no way to change the language. I recommend you speak with the local support, http://www.wowchina.com/support/ , to request an English translation for the Chinese localized version.

When I requested more information, suspecting he was giving me tech support sarcasm, I got:

Quote:
When I was referring you to the Chinese support, it was with the notion of suggesting that idea as there is no such feature currently availible that I'm aware of. Unfortunately, in terms of support for the Chinese version, there's not much else I can assist with.

So, thanks Blizzard. I ended up playing with the Chinese interface, local tech support never did reply, and I get through by using this site heavily for reference. It can be frustrating, but it works well enough to keep me amused (usually an easy task).

You can sometimes download the English version as a trial, then upgrade. As far as I know, that would leave you playing on North American servers and facing time zone problems for groups, guilds and raids. I thought about giving it a try, then hit the part where they wanted a credit card number and declined. I don't send credit card info through my local ISP; although I am sure they are very nice folks, I prefer not to tempt fate.

I've wondered if the local launcher could be used to launch the English version; however, with all the fuss over people getting banned for using various applications I've been reluctant to try. The code is there, and I'm sure it could be reached, but I gather Blizzard likes things the way they have set them up. Europe is allowed translations, apparently Asia is not. At least I pay by actual time used rather than flat monthly fees.

Good luck, and if you get an answer to the language problem I would appreciate a PM. :)

Buy the English version (from a website or have someone ship it to ya?).

Buy English game cards (same way?).

Fake your phone number and address.

Ready, set, play!

As Mazra said, What Blizz don't know don't hurt'em.

Just ship a copy from NA and get some game cards and use 90210 as your postal code always works.

Thank you for the replies everyone.

lazykrnboi, I need the english version because I'm new here in Korea and know barely a word of the language.

What I've figured out is that I can download the WOW client and play 10 days free trial. Then, if I wish to upgrade to a regular account, I just need to enter a cd key and credit card information. I can get a cd key by asking someone in Canada to buy the game, and then read the cd key to me. Yay.

However, I will have to lie and say that I currently live in Canada and give my old Canadian address and postal code. But do you think blizzard would know that I'm lying? I'll have a Korean IP address. Do you think they'll care?

I'm also in Korea at the moment... I'm in the military though. If you are in the military, or are a dependent of a servicemember (with a valid ID card obviously) then just go to the nearest PX and pick up the US version of WoW. The Korean version is different and you can't log into a US account or play on US servers with it; I tried it at an internet cafe in Itae Won a few weeks ago.

Other than that, just buy the game online at amazon.com or something and have it shipped over. Basically, once you install the US English version of the game you're set, no matter where you're playing from.
