New macro system?Follow

Hi All

Are there any guides on how to use the new, post-patch macro system properly? My usual macro to make the pet attack, copied and pasted from the 'net a few weeks back, sent the pet in to attack as I fired Concussive Shot. Very handy. As of yesterday, after the expected changes, it wouldn't work any more, and popped up an error message. The trick of pressing shift while clicking the spell icon, in order to add it to the macro, doesn't work now, either. I trawled the Blizz Europe site and the "guide" to macros on there was laughable.

Anyway, after mucking about a while, I discovered that manually typing the following macro now makes my primitive pet macro work again:

/PetAttack
/cast Concussive Shot

The first line used to be /script PetAttack(): as I recall... Anyway, I hope it helps another newbie hunter or two, out there :)

Yeah, my "target" macro doesn't seem to work anymore either. And it's just simply a /target nameofmob.

But my "woot" macro still works!
/train
/s WOOT!

Azuarc (an Admin) kindly posted a link here http://forums.tkasomething.com/viewtopic.php?t=3220 which details more post-patch macros. Very handy.

Wow looks like they totally redid the macro language.

No wonder nothing works.

Aye, even to my inexperienced eye it looks WAY different. I'm very grateful for the link I was given by Azuarc, and (maybe I missed it somewhere?) Blizzard should have released a basic "Macro 101" just to illustrate some changes to macros that are commonly in use. If I did miss it, so have a lot of other people, as there's a fair bit of channel chat regarding broken macros.

Why did they have to change the old system?? What does this prove anyway? I am not a programer and have no idea to make new ones. Hope fully some site will soon have some basic ones on that I can copy. TY for listening.

The old system allowed you to automate stuff that Blizzard wanted you to do yourself. The new system allows you to do shiny things the old one wouldn't let you. The new system is easier to understand.

Anyhow, if you want to know how to do something specific, just ask. Enough people understand macros and can cough up the macro you'd like to have.

Bah, I still can't find the plain old "/target mobIamlookingfor". If I find it I will post it here.

Make it a focus, maybe?

The macros page has me so confused-I never realized so many people had so many complicated things going on. I've never used anything like any of those! (and I feel like I am reading Greek on that thread!)

Isn't focus like when you already have a mob targeted and you want to target it's target? (maybe-I am confused on that too)

See, I spend alot of time rare mob hunting. Sometimes I go up one continent and down the other hunting rare mobs. And they don't always spawn in the same place. So I ride through an area while clicking away at my macro for say "/target Fenros". If I get no hit I keep riding, sometimes I get lucky, find them, kill them and move on. Or...if we are looking for a named mob for a quest(like the Ogre in Burning Steppes) who may be in several places, use the /target to locate them easier.

Not having it will not stop me from my hunting, but it sure made finding named mobs easier!

No, a focus is a unit you specify at an earlier stage, like before combat. It's not feasable for what you want to do. I was thinking along the lines of healing the General at the 2nd boss in AQ20.

Quote:
* /target, /focus, and /startattack take all valid unit ids as well as entity names. Where applicable they default to target if no unit is specified.

Seems like it should still work. Now if only I had more detail about "valid unit ids". Would these be limited to target, focus, targettarget, player, etc... or actually any mob's name? Would think the last, but then I have no idea why it doesn't work for you. Gonna test it when I'm at home.

From what I've read, it'll take any valid mob name. I *think* (and this is all speculation 'cause I can't find where I thought I read it) that it's case sensitive with the entity name.

So, /target Joe Snuffy is different from /target joe snuffy is different from /target JoE sNuFfY.

Very strange thing. I had tried the /target macro with the toon I was leveling on Kael'thas-I was even trying to target my hubby's toon because he was right next to me, and nothing worked. Last night Kael'thas decided to boot us out and not let us back in(for whatever reason), so we jumped to some alts we started on Norganon with some family members. I tried one of my macros right off the bat(Paladin-I have a /target hubbystoon /cast Blessing of Might) and it worked!! So I changed it around to target other things and it worked(Hogger). It seemed that when there was no target, the notice of "Unknown unit" never came up like it used to. When Hogger would respawn, the /target worked just fine.

Now I have **no** idea why it wasn't working on my shaman, I will have to go back and check it as soon as I get a chance.

It was interesting with the BoM macro-if he was in range to target, but not bless, it would say "I'm not close enough", but if he wasn't in range of target it would just cast the blessing on myself. Cool. =)

Just wanted to follow-up here.
