Patch issues: WoW vs. the rest. Do they all suck?Follow

#1 Dec 06 2006 at 4:57 PM Rating: Decent
EU gamer here.

WoW is the only MMORPG I have ever played. I was wondering if any of you could tell me if the other online-games suck as much when it comes to maintenance and patches as Blizzard does.

I am currently looking at the login screen where they claim that a list of servers are experiencing "issues", but that these "issues" should be resolved shortly, at approximately midnight. It's now 1:45 and nothing has changed. I believe that I can help them cut down on their work though. Instead of listing the various servers that are down, none of which I have a character on, they should instead write; "Every single server in all languages are down" (some of which I have a character on).

See, that's the biggest problem I have with Blizzard. If they would only let us know what is actually going on this would all be so much easier. Instead thay give us "bestimates". Making an estimate of how much time something will take, and then using the best scenario possible, however unrealistic it may be.

Is this the case with other MMORPGs?

/did I just rant?

Of course, while I was ranting some servers popped back up. None of mine though.

My server just did a server reset, but they warned us 15 minutes beforehand. Kinda sucked that I was running a random person through RFD, lol.

My only other MMORPG experience is EQ1, and yes they were just as bad or worse about patch issues, and to add to it, they would put out a new "expansion" about every 3 to 4 months, that would require you to pony up some more hard earned cash to keep up with the raid crowd.

Blizzard really isn't so bad. They could do worse.

Not a ringing endorsement, but I'll take it.

Some nights When FFXI rolls out a new patch you can not get it for days..... Don't feel to bad.

I still remember when I played XI and I couldn't log on a full week after a server crash. Multiple times....and the fact that nearly every patch day meant a 3 day break for most people. CoH wasn't TOO terrible, usually just a couple days of unbearable lag than it was ok (ya know, besides the whole lack of really refined content). Honestly, I don't know what the problem people have with blizz's tech team is. The patch download is the smoothest of any game I've played, and the fact that the servers aren't outright crashing (most of the time) when everyone and their grandmother try to login at the same time to test the new stuff (causing way more server strain than is normal) says alot about the skill of the tech team.

Honestly, it feels like no matter how things go, all you hear in the WoW community is the ********* Well, they say that the happy people don't feel like posting most of the time and the upset people have a talent for loudness. Seems like most whining stems from not seeing the big picture though. Server traffic is probably somewhere near 400% or so of normal atm, so the fact that they have the servers running at all is kinda impressive.

The one thing that stood out to me about Blizzard (from beta-test up to now) was they posted server info at the pre-login screen. At least you know what is happening (most of the time) in WoW. I played EQ1 for 5 years and all we could do was wonder what was going on and keep typing our login name and password over and over just to get rejected. I can't emphasize enough how frustrating that can be when all you want to do is just play and you have no idea why you can't log in. Your internet provider? Your TCP/IP settings? Their server? Dog chewed through your coax cable? You get the idea.

Information, even simple things like 'some realms are experiencing authentication issues' is far, far superior to no information at all.

In my opinion, Blizzard wins here hands down compared to SOE / EQ. They have let some things slip recently, but they are managing more servers and more customers than any other MMOG to date. I think they are doing a great job all things considered.

I'll readily take the current issues, however frustrating they are at the time, over how most MMOs I've played have gone. As was mentioned, Blizzard at least informs you something's wrong. Their CS might be crap when things are buggy for all 7 million users, but the rest of the time it's one of the best I've dealt with (not THE best, but in the top ranks).

Hell, on patch night, due to their background downloader having already downloaded most of the patch, patching took me around 11 minutes.

That's 1 minute to get the 2 or 3 MBs missing, and 10 minutes to install the monstrosity.

Kudos Blizzard, I can only imagine the horror if I had to download 700 MBs on patch night.

Yeah, I only had 11% downloaded from the Background thingy, so I spend nice 5 hours DLing the damn patch.

But as said, Blizzard could do worse. At least if we lose alot of playtime, they usually give it back as days or weeks of free playtime.

Back when I played FFXI, I think it was at 2005, they had these weird DDoS attacks, for like a month straight. Maintenances and patches and we couldn't play almost at all. Did we get refund? No.

So, I still support Blizzard fully, even if on PATCH NIGHTS I couldn't play, its totally understandable.

From a new person perspective I dont really have many complaints about the way the patch has been handled (only complaint would be the background downloader).

My background downloader had hardly done much but a quick trip to fileshack had the whole 697mb GB patch downloaded in about 50mins. Run the patch and log in. (OK well would of been able to play if my wireless USB driver had been up to date. Another 15 mins updating that and then was able to log in and play).

My server did go down after a while but as there was 15mins warning I have no complaints about that. I would much rather they did that than have the potential of a crash at some point. So yes perhaps I have lost a few hours of play but it (so far) has gone much better than I was expecting. Nearly 700Mb of patching is massive in my view and to get most people up and running within a few hours when thats been done I think is a good achievement.

My concern is for the poor people who play this via dial-up connections, how are they going to get this 697Mb patch!

Compared to my experiences wtih FFXI ("Oh yeah... we patched... see you next week and be sure to BAI MO GIL!") and City of Treadmills ("Yeah... here's a patch. Sorry about the Lag. And the lack of content"), WoW has been fine and dandy.

And it's pretty predictable as well. Patch goes up... Extended Maintenence goes on. And on. The rolling reboots for the next two days. Sure, it's annoying, but it's a consistant annoying.

As for the Background Downloader, it made things simple on my end. Had mine set to run in the background while playing and after logout for about a week while patch was in PTR, and on Patch Day, the "Official Download" took one minute. It spent more time installing than downloading.

Patching is a reality of MMO's. Sure it could be better, but lets be honest, aside from the 6 or so patch days per year, everything else runs pretty smoothly.

I've played end game content in EQlive, EQOA, ffxi, and EQ2 and had a brief stint with SWG. I also tried guildwars for a while. Granted most of those are sony titles but for me, WoW is by far the best mmo of those i've listed.

I don't want to get into a complicated discussion of why, but lets just say at some point I swore to never camp a 24 hour spawn and play wow.

I would certainly encourage you to see for yourself how the other games are. Most come with a 1 free trial period. IMO if you aren't happy, and want to try another game, its only a 30 dollar gamble, and who knows, maybe you'll enjoy it more.

Regardles, i think in this forum you will find more people telling you that wow is the best. You might want to try posting in some of the other allakahazm areas. Best of luck!
