What a weapon looks like is useful only if you are role-playing. More important weapon info is "Can you use it?".
1. Each class is restricted in what weapons they can use. For example, Warlocks are limited to unarmed, daggers, swords, and staves.
2. Training. Some weapons require training to equip. Warlocks do not start out with staves or swords. They have to buy training in a major city for those weapons.
3. Weapon level. Most weapons have level restrictions. You have to be a certain level to equip them.
4. Weapon stats. For melee classes, DPS is probably the most important stat. For casters, other stats (like +STA, +INT, or +spell damage) are more important than DPS.
What this really means is that a level 1 cool-looking double-bladed fist weapon that does 2.1 DPS will rapidly be replaced by something more useable, no matter what it looks like.
