Blue response to solo instances.Follow

I came across this and thought I’d pass it along. I’d really love to be able to solo instances. It would be a good way to challenge myself when I couldn’t, or didn’t choose to, find a group. But it seems the mechanics are too challenging. I especially like Tseric’s description of what effect all those instances would have on their hardware. It made me laugh.

Tseric wrote:
The fundamental design issue with regards to soloable instances is that you have to tune them to be soloable.

In this game, that basically means providing a challenge that would not favor or hinder any one class. With the nature of class diversity being what it is in this game, this severely limits the difficulty level of a soloable dungeon.

If it requires too much healing to complete, pure melee or casters are impeded.

If it requires significant amounts of dps, you either have to spec and gear properly for one, single dungeon or pure dps classes simply have a leg up.

If you can't tank or mitigate damage effectively...well, you're dead at the first pull.

Therefore, if you reduce group size and composition to a single participant, the more generic and easy you have to make the dungeon. If the dungeon then drops any significant loot, you end up with folks farming the thing at all hours and creating thousands upon thousands of instances until the hardware wets itself, then short-circuits due to increased moisture. ;)

Just some thoughts from the design side for discussion.

I don't think I'll ever understand people wanting solo instances in a MMORPG.

MMORPGs are all about diversity. With seven million people playing this game you can’t expect everyone to like exactly the same thing. One of my greatest joys from this game comes from the “fun” items we can collect, such as non-combat pets, lanterns to carry around, weapons that look like a fish or a mug… I appreciate such items a lot more than purple armor and/or weapons. But I don’t expect everyone to feel the same. I find non-consensual PvP to be little more than a bully’s wet dream. But again, I don’t expect everyone to feel the same. I see no reason why anyone should be chastised for having fun playing a game they pay a monthly fee to play, be that grouping, soling, leveling professions or just standing around town talking.

WoW isn’t perfect, but Blizzard has done a great job creating an environment where people with diverse interests can all find something they enjoy doing. My only regret is that there aren’t even more options, such as solo instances, player housing and more player made items that aren’t level dependent.

But there is tons of solo content in the game, in fact it is the most solo friendly game I've played why would you need an instance to play alone when you have 99% of the world for that?

*Because* it is solo friendly, people want to solo instances. Many view this game as largely single player up until 60, and some even like to find ways to challenge themselves as an individual. That challenging can be exploring, or showing their prowess in PvP, or it can be soloing things that others might not be able to. I have a lot of respect for Dysphoria for her "Hunter vs World" videos that show how she solos a majority of the bosses in several of the high-end dungeons. One could argue that she uses pathing exploits, and she does have people clear the trash for her after she's done it once so she has time to fight the boss before respawn, but it's impressive nonetheless.

Once in a great while, when I feel like it, I do go back and solo lower-level instances. Most people can do SM, but anything more challenging deserves some mention. (Pity you can't get to Archaedas without 3 people.)

Would I want a dedicated solo instance, though? Maybe one, just to recapture that "dungeon crawl" feeling that is pretty hard to get anywhere in the mini-dungeons of the world. But if I really want that, that's why I go back to Uldaman.

Why not? Look at all the group instances in game right now. Why add any more in the expansion?

I agree, WoW is very solo friendly. It’s not nearly as RP friendly as it could be, but its very solo friendly. But we all get burned out on existing content after we’ve played the game for a while. This holds true for group content as well as solo content. Solo instances would be one more option for player to have fun with. And having more options is always a good thing.

I agree, solo farming the whole of DM west "plant part" was quite challenging to get down. Maybe get youre solo instance fix that way.
(not just AOEing the big groups of small lashers but everything, including killing the sub boss)

That quote is 100% truth. I never saw any whay they could do it at all. If for some reason they found a way to do this at level 60 then they would have to make veryone happy at lower levels too, then what levels do you make the single person instance at... 10, 20, 30, 40, 50, and 60.

WoW does a great job for folks of all kinds to allow them to play this game. And if folks want to play single player content there are many classes, race, then put in Horde and Alli in there and you combos to keep a person happy for a few years.

I'd actually go for class-specific instances. It'd give me a solid reason to want to level one of each job to 60. Then I'd have something to do with that job when I got there.

Isn't world PvP dead enough as it is, that you want to offer soloable, instanced, progression content?

When UX:O was in production, one of their large selling point was instanced dungeons that would set it's diffculty level(Some mobs got more health/armor/ect and other mobs added, pretty much similiar to what a single player diffculty setting changes would do) according to how many players and what level players entered.

So it is possible to do, but would require some heavy recoding, and I'm sure EA probably won't be to happy to give away code like that.

I've always been a fan of class specific quests that give decent rewards.

For example the hunter or priest epic weapon quests... Or even the druid quests for learning new forms.

IMO it'd be great to have a quest like that for all classes at 70.

A solo fight/questline would be fine, or even better, a class specific instance with only 2 or 3 bosses (Something that tests your aptitude in each talent tree.)
Of course this "cavern of trials," if you will, would be tied to a questline or would only have one worthwhile reward at the end, to eliminate people farming it repeatedly.

But like I said, nothing huge, nothing farmable; just something that makes you feel special for completeing and has a single halfway decent reward at the end. Smiley: grin
#13REDACTED, Posted: Dec 04 2006 at 9:29 AM, Rating: Sub-Default, (Expand Post) if you want pure solo content, play some Conquer online or guildwars. if i recall GW is almost exclusivly ment to work solo or teambased. since you can get NPCs to play the role of the class your lacking.

You could also try Dungeon Siege 1 or 2. You get people to join your group and you can control any 1 person in your group or you can have all of them attack the same target. Really fun game. Though in 2 they do limit how many you can have in a group, which kinda sucked. In 1 you can have a team of 6 or 8 (can't remember which) and in 2 i think you are limited to either 3 or 4.
