OT: I finally win something, a Wii brick.Follow

#1 Dec 01 2006 at 12:17 PM Rating: Good
So apparently a small number of Wiis have a firmware issue in which the first update burns the system out so it can no longer update or connect to the internet. I finally hit the small odds on something. Took three days to reach Nintendo (storms in Redmond so the techs were out), but at least once I reached them everything was smooth. New box being sent out, then I can ship the old one back. Lose my saves though, goodbye to 11 hours on Twilight Princess and 8+ on Rampage (the update that burns out the system is the one that lets you transfer saves to SD card...).

On the whole it could be worse, more amused and annoyed than enraged.

One of the reasons why I decided to wait on buying the new systems... not that i'm not itching to get my hands of Twilight Princess, but the bugs in the 360 release and the probable (now confirmed) bugs with the Wii and PS3 makes me want to wait those extra months for them to be fixed and such.

I always wait a few months before buying a new console.

And Wii is definitely the console I want to get, once I have the funds to actually buy one (rent, bills, food, tuition, etc all come first).

yep, usually every console's first generation has some probs. What I'm curious is PS3, Originally Sony said it wouldn't be ready till after Jan. then when Wii announced their release date, all of sudden it was ready.

Wanna know something crazy? I still have a first gen xbox with the crap disc drive, and it still works lawl. One of my friends had his crap out a couple of months ago.

OMG I saw the most disturbing commercial on TV last night.
Was for the PS3.

Had some weird-*** baby-doll thing with bleeding eyes and ****, then the PS3 started hovering...

was freaky.

wasn't sure if it was a commercial or a TOOL video.

Yea, the bad thing about the PS3 right now (and even the Wii to an extent) is that most of the games have already come out on the 360. "Ohh I can play the game i've already beaten in slightly higher defination IF I have a high-def tv" Big whoop de do... They really needed a few more exclusive launch titles imo... not that they didn't really sell out with the fanbois and people reselling on ebay and such.

Ya, except for Sony's "we will have 400k available for launch" in the US turned out to be 175k...

Not to mention, every review I read of the PS3 says to wait because they are not worth the money.

This happened to my buddy. It took Nintendo 3 days to get a new one to him.

Don't sweat it.

Did you know Nintendo is the only company that is actually making a profit on the consoles?

It goes for cheaper than the other 2 and they are still making money. Just goes to show you how NOT next gen it really is. I'm not knocking it, I don't believe you need top-of-the-line to play great games. Just making a statement really.

I don't understand how Nintendo having an income from their product makes them worse than Sony or Microsoft.

More money is suddenly a bad thing for a corporation.

Makes sense to me, I mean the company making more money, means that they'll be spending more money to make better products for their customers.
That sounds so horrible.

I'm protesting against Nintendo!

His point is nintendo put <$249.99 into the hardware of their system while XBox and Sony put >399.99 and >599.99 respectively into theirs.

It can be said that more money = more advanced technology and thusly better gaming capabilities be it graphics, storage, media playback or whatever.

However, keep in mind that was nintendo's plan all along though. They wanted to go for a more revolutionary thing (hence the codename before the Wii probably) and actually go for a product that was easy to manufacture and could be done in bulk so as to not run into as severe a problem at launch as the 360 and now PS3 had in terms of supply.

Oh yeah and it was a great decision by Nintendo I think. It definately has it's consumer base. I just think it's a bit different from Microsoft's and Sony's consumers who want leading edge graphics and presentation.

Actually MS is making 30-40 bucks profit off each 360 sold as well.

I think I read somewhere that Namco said they would need to sell 500,000 PS3 games globally in order to make any sort of profit on what it cost to get started.

Since Sony hasnt even sold (or made) that many PS3s yet it isnt looking too good for anyone to even consider getting a profit from the PS3 yet... except the people who are selling their PS3s on Ebay.

Namco:

EA talks about PS3 sales vs. Wii sales:

Yes.

Although I liked the one with the exploding Rubik's Cube... :)

They are NOW... when the 360 came out last year, they were taking a loss on it. Typically a new console is sold at a loss. Once it's in production for a while, the production costs go down and they start to make a profit. The big deal is, Sony's taking a massive loss per unit right now, considerably more than MS or Nintendo. I'm not sure where I read it, but Sony's losing a couple hundred every time they make a PS3 right now (whatever the actual number is, it's about twice what MS lost on the 360 launch).

And Selebrin, I'm sorry you got a lemon, but I've heard a LOT of good things about Nintendo's customer service. I found this on the VG Cats webcomic and it seems a lot of the people who've damaged their Wii-motes have reported rapid and helpful replacement of damaged parts.

Oh certainly, it was fast service, good turnaround, and I'm expecting a replacement on Monday or Tuesday. I just like to complain. I have been incredibly happy with my Wii otherwise, from setup to games.

Well, I'm really glad to hear you're enjoying your Wii. ;)

I've been half-heartedly looking for one myself, but they're as rare as hen's teeth.

...

No, wait... that's the PS3 :D
