>>> How to modify game skins! <<<

1.) Open the texture.MPQ using MyWarCraftStudio (http://www.curse-gaming.com/mod.php?addid=657)
a.) find texture you want to edit. right click on texture you want and export, save it as name.blp

2.) Convert the .blp to a .bmp using the java converter (http://members.cox.net/bajabob78/converter.zip) extract the converter and simply double click on the wowimage.jar (you need to install java runtime) the program is self explanatory once you run it ;)

3.) Make a backup of the .bmp file. Edit the copy only!

4.) Make your changes to the texture using a photo editor of choice, I use PS. When you save it it is important to save it as a 256 color (8bit) indexed color .bmp. If you want to use photoshops advanced features be sure to use change the image to an rgb instead of indexed, by clicking Image > Mode > RGB Color. When your ready to save put it back to indexed.

5.) Once you have finished editing the file you must edit the bmp header info using a hexideciamal editor or the converter will not get it back into a blp. (Note: Everytime you save it you must fix the header!)

6. open the original bmp file in a hex editor (http://www.download.com/Hackman-Hex-Editor-Lite/3000-2352_4-10354867.html?tag=lst-0-1)
and copy the entire 3rd row, or offset 0000:0020 it might look like this:

0000:0020 00 00 02 20 00 00 12 0B 00 00 12 0B 00 00 00 00

7. Open the edited bmp with the hex editor and paste the 3rd row from the original into the edited bmp.

8. Now you can convert the bmp to blp using the same converter file.

9. place this image in your data folder replicating the tree, so if you made changes to a human model for instance you would place it here: World of Warcraft\Data\Character\Human\Female\HumanFemaleNakedTorsoSkin00_00.blp

I did not create the converter. This was done by taktaal, but I could not get edited bmps converted into blps so I devised the workaround using a hex editor :)

This works, I have modified human textures, and within an hour should have a rough nudepatch for human females :p

Here are my human skins, along with the night elf skins:

And these are some samples:

Hm, now human and NE females appear invisible to me, except my own. I think. Definantly humans.
#356 Jul 23 2005 at 8:08 PM Rating: Decent
They're invisible now after what?? what did you do?

Cant help ya unless you say what you did, if you placed the files were you were supposed to you should be fine.

Okay, got everything, used MS paint to edit a file, did the whole saving as .bmp (just standard 256 color) and then changed the hex, but it won't let me change it back to a .blp :?
#358 Jul 23 2005 at 8:16 PM Rating: Decent
Yeah, nevermind that :p It's fixed.

Anyway, the error message for the converter is 'RLE-compressed BMPs are not supported'

You missed a folder Ahriana. The human folder goes inside the character folder, your directory is missing the character folder.
#360 Jul 23 2005 at 8:33 PM Rating: Decent
you cant have compressed bmps, and I dont know how to prevent that using paint, I would get photoshop or some other editor.

good stuff in here... i made a nudie for kicks for my character. i'm trying to play around with some armor textures tho, and i can't figure out how to edit texture files with transparencies in them... trying to trick out some of my armor a bit. the transparency doesn't seem to carry over in the bmp from photoshop... any ideas?

Cool, so Ahriana, for that download link you posted, do you just throw the 2 blp files into the Data folder? or do you replace them in WoWStudio, im still kinda new to this stuff ^^

thanks
#364 Jul 23 2005 at 9:27 PM Rating: Default
I also tried it in Paint Shop Pro 9, is there a setting I'm missing?
#365 Jul 23 2005 at 9:28 PM Rating: Default
Etern -- same as before, throw 'em in. You could also make a folder directory...Character/Human/Female/files...also stack a Character/NightElf/Female and so forth..it works either way.
#366 Jul 23 2005 at 9:40 PM Rating: Default
ok, so just taking the blp's out of the character/etc folders and throwing em in the Data folder works
#367 Jul 23 2005 at 9:47 PM Rating: Default

So, anyone planning to better the NE skins? ;p I'm bored is all.
#373 Jul 24 2005 at 5:34 PM Rating: Default
The NE one is better imao.

It's great that this is cracked finally. The hex editing (I think) is why the characters don't vanish. When you make a 1x1 tga, it obviously doesn't have any of the hex, so the game doesn't show it until you open up the Character box. Because the Hex code is correct it always shows so you don't have to open the character screen. Which good if you are playing Horde and a Alliance attacks you and you don't have GoodInspect… though I'm not really sure why said alliance would do it naked.
#374 Jul 24 2005 at 5:44 PM Rating: Decent
Im working on improving the NE ones now.
#375 Jul 24 2005 at 5:55 PM Rating: Decent
In theroy i could reskin my NE as a blatently more uber highbourne =P

Only thing thats stopping me is i really don't have a clue anymore O.o

so if anyones worked it out and could make me a patch.
even if it only afects one skin tone and hair color.
Im happy just to look like a highbourne =D

So id need a blonde hair(Fem) texture and a (Fem)whitish skin texture o.o.

Failing that.
I might fiddle around with the stuff a while when i get back from work. =/
