Alchemy(artisans info plz!)Follow

#1 Nov 21 2004 at 7:43 PM Rating: Decent
basically i want to role a human pally in retail

that being said , im torn wether to go blacksmithing + mining
or alchemy + herbalism

my friend was a human pally while i was a human warlock in ST2 and OB ..he made so much cash it was insane being mining + blacksmith

but i REALLY like the mid-higher level potions alchemy has..and the fact they can transmute iron to gold and gold to thorium

can any expert - artisan alchemist tell me if transmuting iron to gold etc are money makers later on?
is it worth it going pally and not taking the more cookie cutter trade skills?

your opinion is VERY valued and thanks for your time

We'd have a better chance getting alchemists to answer once the game is released ^^

Prehaps someone with the guide can answer this one?

The transmuting thing is negligible as you can only transmute 1 thing every 48 hours but alchemy is WAY handier, especially if you pvp. Fire protection, arcane protection, invisibility, speed increase potions, its an awesome tradeskill. Im doing engineering and then when its maxed im picking up alchemy for all the handy potions... ya mana and health potions are nice but they arent near as handy as the other potions you can make, not to mention you can buy mana and health potions. So it would come down to whether you want pvp support or making money... if you dont pvp then mining/smithing for sure.

You could try waiting more than 5 minutes for an answer. I don't know about the others here, but I only spend HALF my day on the Allakhazam forums.

I've never done a transmute, and I had the skill since the day the first transmutes went in. Caellae has the right of it for the mostpart. I would say it is a huge money-making profession, although honestly I wouldn't really say smithing is either. Just mine and sell the ore if you want to make money -- it's pure profit.

Alchemy at higher levels tends to be very choked off by specific herbs. You need a ton of khadgar's whisker. Then goldthorn. Gromsblood. Sungrass. At each step nearly every recipe I had that wasn't nearly trivial required the magic herb at that level. That's my biggest peeve - all the storage space for herbs and you only need certain ones. Overall I find it rewarding, but it retrospect, I think it's more trouble than its worth.

As I'm going to be a Priest, I would assume that I need lots of Drink?

If so, I should take up Cooking.

What is the best support skil lfor it? Fishing or Herbalism?

...alchemy is worth it for me. making your own hp/mp and speed (50% for 15s) is so helpful.

and money? I made a nice $ on the potion that did 150 + to defance for 1 hour. and don't for get that lot of leather works and other skills need alchmest item to make some of their good stuff...

but over all i say that blacksmith + smithing is better money though... and much more helpful to a pld...

When have you ever cooked a drink? =p

There is no tradeskill that makes drinks, and very few cooking recipes have mana regen on them. It isn't worth mentioning unless they change something.

OTOH, cooking doesn't cost you a tradeskill slot, so do it if you feel like it.

Fishing is the only support for cooking, other than killing beasts to collect their meats.

i guess i was mistaken, but i thought that alchemy could make certain hp/mp drinks. I havent studied the recipe lists yet, so i guess id better do that since i want to take up alchemy...

So the MOST benefitial tradeskill for a Priest/Mage would be Alchemy?
Cool.. that sets my path then.

Alchemy has a few pros & cons:

Pros:
· Advantages of whatever potion you drink.
· It’s quite satisfying to get something for nothing (treasure chest syndrome)

Cons:
· Refresh timers on certain potions. If you heal once with a potion, you have to wait 2 minutes before you can heal, sprint, or go invisible again. They are all on the same timer.

· Storage space required for herbs, get ready to give up 30+ slots. You need to continue to make low-level potions to use them in high-level potions. You will need peacebloom, silver leaf, & earthroot for the rest of your days…

· High level herbs are in dangerous places. Plan on dying a lot to get that special herb. The designers not only put the good stuff around high level mobs, they also put them in contested areas. I can see lots of PvP battles in great herb/fishing areas. It’s the games natural progression.

· (Hunters) can’t track enemy when tracking herbs. Taking your eye off the enemy and harvesting herbs will be like be like bending over to pick up soap in a prison shower. It wont take long to figure out your enemy is in “harvest” mode, tracking him/her for a few minutes and ganking them when they are 50% into a “rare” herb might produce an honorable kill (level permitting), then you can pick the herb and stroll off…
