having a troll mage for retail is not a bad idea right , for pvp btw just asking for opinions

I am not seeing huge differences in racial choice, there are differences, but they are not large enough to make it so one combination is bad (like playing a Galka mage in FFXI, it could be done but it wasn't efficient at all).

Want to play a Troll Mage? You will be fine.

They gave each race their class choices because those are what will work efficiently. So, if you play a Troll Mage you are going to do well as a mage, compared to any other mage. I like Trolls, I like mages, so my mage will be a Troll. I like the idea of an Undead warlock more than any other warlock, so that will be what my warlock is. Any race/class combo will work. Just pick what suits you. =)

I'm sure gnomes would make fine priests, with their superior intellect. But would you call a gnome warrior "efficient", necessarily?

Races are for lore reasons, but any race that can be a class can be perfectly fine at it. The class is what dictates the character. The race just adds some flavor.

Heh, I have heard a Tauran Warrior ranting as he got pwned by a even lvl Gnome Warrior. Yes any race can play any class, but in this case the smaller stature of a Gnome might have been what gave this fellow his advantage. In PVP, smaller=harder to target and hit :-).

The Race just gives you some nice additional abilities. These abilities tend to be more overtly useful at low levels, but the higher you get the less of a difference they make. Class abilities dominate the high-end. It isn't that Race abilities become unnoticeable, but they do not alter balance really; pick a race you like with abilities you like and just have fun.

there is not a significant diffrence between classes/races in PvP. The game is pretty well balanced right now. Once retail gets into swing, im sure a few issues might crop up, but still minor compared to other games.

It seems like race only determine starting stats, and then after that the stat gain by level is dependant on class. So while one race might start out a little lower in on stat, its only by 3 or 4 points AT THE MOST and they will scale up evenly after that. Plus its really easy to buff stats with equipment in this game, so making up that difference isn't a huge deal at all.

Not usually a fan of IGN, but they have a really good WoW site (though its not updated to the most recent version of the beta). On it is a really good break down of class/race stats, check it out:
