Warning on training weapons, restriction again.Follow

I was wondering is there a list per class on what weapons and skills are “allowed” to be used by that class? This is critical as when making the wrong choice you can gimp your character.

Hunter is a good example; its skills are split between ranged attack or melee weapons. However take note of the Rogue, he has a sneak attack that increases back attack damage, yet only can be used with Daggers?

I trained my Rogue on swords, because I like swords, just a preference of mine.

So is there a way to know what skills are going to have such limits like this in advance?

Thanks,

Isolo

Swords don't techically "gimp" your rogue, there are many rogues out there who prefer swords in the mid levels because of availabilty of daggers at that point. It just requires a different type of strategy than normal backstabing and such.

As for telling you what abilities go with what weapon, right below the initial name of backstab, it says "requires dagger" unlike other skills which say "requires melee weapon"

You don't have to worry about "gimping" your character with weapon skills in the first place. Theres no restriction on how many weapon skills you can learn, just on what types (not all classes can use a staff for example). But it is extremely easy to catch these skills up at a later date if you choose to switch weapon types. And just because daggers are required to do backstabs, doesnt mean that they are the defacto weapon for rogues. Ive heard that many rogues choose to dual wield maces in order to make use of the stuns an such that are available with them.

I think what he means is not that he used up a "weapon skill slot" but that he spent money on a skill that causes him to lose an ability.

Its true that if you train a weapon type that you later decide no to use, then your out the money it cost you to train it. But that’s the only negative aspect to doing so. And once you pass about level ten, or maybe even before then, the ten silvers it costs to train that weapon skill really isn’t a big deal. Skin some animals and sell the leather. Collect some herbs and sell them to an NPC vendor. Fish up a few stacks of fish. Sell off all the teeth and other garbage the mobs tend to drop. Making 10 silver, even at level 10, is not a very heavy burden.

Money doesnt really seem to be on his problem list either..=\

What I was getting at was that he didn't know that using swords or anything besides dagger would take away abilities of his. In fact, I don't think he was even talking about anything about actually *training* the skill, but in the use of the skill because it would make him change his playstyle and limit him a little.

AFAIK, rogues have a very few skills that use daggers, and no other skills are weapon-type specific beyond the extreme obvious. (A mace isn't going to work for Arcane Shot.) Some skills specify one-handed versus two-handed, but that's mostly only talents.

Just a note, Rogues are viable either way. There are plenty of talents in the combat tree that make dual-weilding Swords, even maces efficient for simply frontloading damage. One talent lets you have a chance at an extra attack with each swing with a sword. With Maces, a talent allows you a chance to stun the target, as well as the added benefit of Maces not being in as high demand as 1h Swords. Dagger/Subtlety rogues are probably more deadly, but rely on beginning the fight stealthed, and banking on stealthing out again. It just depends on what type of playstyle suits you. In any case, you can look at the available skills and talents in-game, as well as on this site.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but you can't stealth when you are "in combat", which means you can't just sneak in the middle of a fight. And my impression was subtlety was the least damaging of the three trees because it had abilities that weren't directed at combat. Assassination is dirty fighting, Combat is straight fighting, and Subtlety was lurking in the shadows and avoiding notice.
