Maximum Number of CharactersFollow

#1 Nov 18 2004 at 11:28 AM Rating: Good
I apologize if this question has been beaten to death, but I couldn't find an answer.

Does anyone know if we'll be limited to a single character (with the option to pay for more like in FFXI)? Or will we be allowed an unlimited number of characters like in the old Diablo II setup?

I've been playing the Open Beta and I have 3 characters on 2 different realms. But I'm not sure if that was set up just for the Beta.

Thanks for anyone that can help me out with this query.
(I think it's time to re-subscribe and be able to search the forums again)

Wrong Answer Doole. You are voted off the forum! :p

Taken from the WoW FAQ (which you can assess all by yourself at http://www.worldofwarcraft.com/info/faq/characters.html )

How many characters are allowed per realm?

The current limit is a total of 8 characters on each realm.

I am guessing 'realm' means server because of this answer, but I could be wrong and it *could* mean Eastern, Central, Pacific type things. And you couldn't have unlimited chars on DII btw :p :

Can the same account have both a Horde & Alliance character on the same Realm?

On the PvE (Normal) and Role-play servers (RP), it is possible to have both factions in the same realm.

On the PvP servers, it is not possible for an account to have both Horde and Alliance characters in the same realm

OK. I was just worried we'd be limited to one. I'm probably just going to play 2-3, so I'm good either way. Thanks for the corrected information :)

Well if a realm is a server its KINDA unlimited since you got to think they will have like 100 servers.. thats 8 per and thts 800 characters... thatsa lotta lvling

If its per time zone thats still like oh crap math er... 8 x 4 = um... like... 32!

Woot I did it

One thing that I found interesting is that on a single server you can have both horde and alliance characters. I mean, if they did not do it that way people would gripe...but there could be some ways to take advantage of that, no?

I need to reference another game now for this discussion...lol...go ahead and flame. The game was not a great one...DOAC...but what they did was limit the 'side' you could play on a server. If you wanted characters in army A and army B you had to do so on different servers. That kept people from logging into one army and doing one thing and then logging into the opposing army and doing another. I suppose the idea is you could effectively infiltrate one side and then report back.

The WoW scenario would be to get on your human and join the planning process of a raid and get the details of what, where and how strong. Get all of the strategy...then log off and log into your undead and clue a defending force in on the plans the alliance have.

Not a big deal if it works that way...and two boxing allows this to happen to an even greater level anyway...just an observation.

...all I want is a mage and rogue....

I think.

I *was* going to try a Warlock and Druid, but the Open Beta is ending today and I won't have time :(

But yes, that's a lot of lvling. I wonder if one can get a job playing WoW in the final release....hmm.

If you play on a PvP server, the server where what side you are on makes the most difference, you can have characters on only one side of the war. Blizzard intends to implement the ability to learn enemy languages, so theoretically you could group a human and an orc together in a party if they new the proper languages. This is off of memory from blue text btw, so no claims to accuracy.

In any case, the PvP servers where having a scout in the enemy lands would be most useful you cannot have characters on both factions.

Alright, I know I saw the 10 per server, 50 per account posted somewhere... or was that a different game?! I'm confused...

In there use realm means server, but ussually on blizzard games realm equates to eastcost, westcoast, and the others.

If the forums were up I could check the official last word on how many were on servers, but sadly no. 10 per server and 50 to spread around was what I remember.

OK, so let me get clarification on this...the PVP servers are horde or alliance only? That is something they are changing for retail then, right?...because I know I had characters from both horde and alliance on a single PVP server...at least I am pretty sure.

In the PC Gamer magazine review and "starter guide" it does say that on PvP you can only have your chars on one faction... not both. The realms are not exclusive one or the other but exclusive to the individual.

If you are on Server 1 and you make an Aliance char you may not make a Horde char.
If your friend is on Server 1 and makes a Horde char your friend will not be able to make an Aliance char \

Hence: you won't be able to party with each other but you will be able to beat on eachother!

If you want both factions, you'll have to have them on different servers.

You are unable to create a character on another faction on PvP servers.

Might want to make sure huff, some servers switched pvp>pve. Although it might be something else, because a few closed beta people were still able to create characters on both.

This was the first official blue text response listed on the beta forums. However, I have to assume that this has been altered a bit and the linked page is correct. But it would certainly be nice to know for certain. I’m not worried about where we get 50 or 60 characters overall, but 8 or 10 per server could make a difference for me. I’ve always been a trade skill junkie and with the Berlin Wall between the alliance and the hoard professions have to be duplicated on each side. I could easily fill up ten slots. But then I’ve always been a bit insane.

How is this a problem? Nothing prevents you from mailing items between any player.

No, Blizzard answered in an official capacity about two days ago that the final amount of characters allowed would indeed be 10 per server (excluding PvP), and 50 total over all realms. I'd link you to the response if I could, but the WoW beta forums are down at the moment.

Don't always trust the FAQ, it's not updated on a regular basis, they're probably waiting until the day or two before retail to bring it up to speed in one fell swoop.

You cannot mail items to characters on oppsite factions, even if they are both on your account. So if I have ten stacks of hides on my human rogue, I could not send them to my tauren druid because they are on opposite factions. Heck, you can’t buff or even talk to players on the opposite faction. So when I create hoard characters I’ll be starting my professions all over again.

The starter book also says that the factions cannot talk to eachother at all but Undead can speak "Common" so that both can understand.

Undead do not start with common anymore, they now have gutterspeak and orcish.

As for losing tradeskills because of oposite faction, theres really no need to keep both factions on one server. You are essentially making the 10 characters you can create on one server and splitting that server in two because there is nothing good that comes from having chars on both factions except for being a damn dirty cheater in raids.

In the Original Closed Beta servers, you COULD have players on either alliance on the same realm server. After the first Stress Test, you can only have a single alliance on a PVP server, though on Normal servers, you can play both alliances on the same server.

So, for PVP purposes, one side only per server.

The reason I want to stay on the same server is because that’s where all my friends will be and some of them will be playing on either faction or both factions. As for being, “a damn dirty cheater in raids,” I don’t raid. I enjoy PvP about as much as having all my teeth removed with a pair of rusty pliers. I prefer helping other players to killing them. It’s just my play style.

Well, if you have friends that play horde, its just as easy to have them play on another server where you all have horde characters. It doesn't help anything to have both faction on one server, no matter what type of server it is, since theres no real benefit to it.
