Ranged damage questions.Follow

I've been playing wow since open beta started and i have a few characters lvled but i like hunter the most thus far. Most people i've seen post talk about how much higher their ranged damage is than their melee. Sadly i'm quite the opposite, it may just be luck of the drop and my equipment that's doing this but my melee dmg is much higher than my ranged, around 4.5 dps higher. I was just wondering if anyone knew exactly how ranged damage is calculated and what attributes add to it. I can assume that agility is a large portion of it but is your agility all that counts in ranged dmg? Anyway, thanks in advance for your time and i hope i find out what's wrong or i may have to drop hunter.

Thanks,
Headshot

you have to have a good bow, and shoot more often so your skill in archery goes up

Its in the Skills! - Before you enter combat, just make sure you have your Aspect of the Hawk active, and hit the mob with your Hunters Mark. Thats a +40 attack power to your ranged, A decent bow doesn't hurt, but even with a Hickory Shortbow (3.8 dps) at level 11, I was hitting for 19+ as a Orc Hunter, up to a 37 hit. Just work your bow to pull at first, and if you get in a group stand back and let the arrows fly, skill will go up and you'll see a big improvement. By level 16 I was able to pull some moderate *17 - 18* level mobs, and kill them before they even get to me. Just Hunters Mark, Concussive shot, Sting, send in pet, and start shooting, Usually they drop just before they get to melee range.

I never melee. I always send in my pet, let him growl and shoot away. No need for concussion or anything. =)

My ranged is a good 10 dps above my melee at lvl 18. Like they said, shoot a lot and use hunter's mark and aspect of the eagle. I just got my rank 2 eagle and I'm happy. =)

My hunter's listed dps on melee is higher. I can deal more damage with ranged though. Raptor Strike and Wing Clip don't equal the power of the special shots.

And sadly, your weapon DPS will always lag behind your melee weapons.

Straight DPS is always a bit misleading because it neglects special skills. Even attack speed can mess you up, because it's not always accurate. Instant attacks such as Sinister Strike or warrior abilities benefit slow weapons more. The use of certain spells interrupts your melee attacks in different ways depending on how you time it, but in general it hurts faster weapons more. Also, I think that ranged weapons' listed DPS is without accounting for your ammunition. Upshot: you have to test it out in actual battles to get a feel for what's more effective.
