This affects melee more then it does mages, since melee need their weapons and armor in top notch condition more.
The only time I've used the Spirit Healer was if I was on my way back to town to hand in quest items and died on the way back.
Corpse runs aren't bad at all in this game.

Honestly, I prefer to make the corpse run. You move faster as a ghost, meaning you get back in the thick of things faster that way. I would only consider using the healer if I died in a bad place, say in deep water or within aggro radius of town guards.
