Auto-follow your target when it's a mob?Follow

For those who played DAOC, you know what I mean already (/stick). I noticed that there's a follow command, in order to follow a player or a groupmate, but there's no command to stick to a mob. I find this highly absurd, considering that quite a few enemies LOVE to flee when desperate. My guess is they may not have added this feature in the spirit of keeping us as busy as possible (instead of mechincal farming and what not), but this is too much. I just cleared my first instance last night (Vancleef in moonbrook), and the lack of this feature made certain encounters a complete mess. If mobs moved two steps too far away for me to attack, I would have to reposition myself near them. And when you have a group of 5, a pet or two, and 4 mobs all in a tiny area, this is no fun.

So, in other words, how the HELL do you stick to a mob?

If you target a mob, I believe you can "/follow"...

I'm not able to double-check this right now (damn work), but I seem to recall it worked.

but will that lock on to the target, allowing me to move around him or just follow him and cancel if I move?

Hmmm...I have never followed a mob automatically...being an EQer, we had to manually chase the mob (unless there was a command I did not know about...if I played for 5 + years and did not know that...lol)

Actually, it makes sense to follow a group member, you are travelling and you need to not get lost...but follow a mob? Kind of part of the skill in fighting would be to be able to chase it down once it runs. I hope they do not automate that.

Maybe they need an /autoplay command. You log in and type /autoplay and walk away. Come back three days later and you are level 50...none of that nasty business like fighting, questing, chasing down fleeing mobs or playing the game.

I think my boss is pissed at me now for laughing too loud.

Really if you have problem staying in range with a mob for melee damage..you need to get off the keyboard, go take a nap, and take another try.

I like to mess around while im hunting and I rarely ever get out of range/make an attack late by my jumping too and fro and spining needlessly(I only do this on new chars, just so you guys arent looking at me weird for thinking I go further out and do that).

There are so many options to move in the game, that it should not be a problem for you to keep at least one hand attent at keeping you up with a running mob(what you do with that other hand is your own bussiness..).

I don't play DAoC, but I've heard some people say it (and face) was the worst command in the game for tactical reasons, especially related to PvP.

There is no way to automatically chase your target unless they are in your group.

I agree with not having an autofollow, but a mob lock would be nice. (ala FFXI) Freedom of movement in battle is nice but the mix of camera and movement controls makes it very difficult to do that effectively. I don't leave the camera right behind my character so trying to move while looking at a funky angle is annoying. It would be nice to autoface the mob so that no matter where I moved I would at least be facing the right direction.

Why are you using a different angle of view if you know it disrupts your battle?

There's no real reason to run around a mob unless you are in a group positioning yourself for an attack. If you simply just want to run around the mob, circle strafeing is not a hard technique to learn. Just learn how to use the mouse.

To follow-up, I still haven't tested the "/follow" command...

The reason being, you don't need to!

Not to continue the FFXI comparisons, however as it is my latest base of reference, and to explain to those in this thread who may not have wasted the last year playing FFXI, once you are "stuck" onto a mob (target lock is what it is called in FFXI), you cannot "look around", you have no control of the camera. Thus you must spin around the mob, essentially circling it, looking like a complete idiot, in order to see if anything is behind you (like another mob).

The controls in FFXI, at least for PC users, were so non-mouse friendly, that there is actually a layer of dust on my mouse, as I was relegated to play completely via keyboard controls. Once you started fighting a mob, it became very difficult to strafe or chase it as you tried to actually fight it. You were also unable to move your character and issue combat commands/spells, as this would "interrupt" your keyboard-initiated movement.

That will teach me to play a Console game as a port to the PC.. =)

I have found in WoW, with the ability to move my character and the camera with the mouse (as should be normal), while initiating commands/spells via the keyboard, there is indeed no need to have any type of /stick or /follow...

My $.02
